Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Hollow Knight: Silksong?

I haven't played it yet, and based off of early impressions, I don't think I'll be playing it for a while. Silksong sounds like it's doubling down on everything I loved and hated about Hollow Knight, which means I'll more than likely not finish it.

Maybe it is a little premature of me, but I’m giving it a 10/10. My opinion could change the more I progress, but as it stands I find it to be masterful. The map is fun to explore and not overly complicated, combat is crunchy and versatile, with new abilities that really expand how you approach traps and enemies, the sound design and audio is sublime, and the game is the right amount of difficult. It’s crazy that I feel this way about the game considering I didn’t enjoy Hollow Knight at all.

I'm loving it. I've played around 25 hours since launch and I don't think I'm even close to the end of act 1.

I'm giving it a provisional 9/10 with my main complaint being some of the cheap difficulty. Bosses who summon minions are always annoying but there are multiple instances in this game. I'm also finding some of the locked rooms with swarms of enemies frustrating.

Despite those minor issues, the game is a masterpiece. It might end up being 10/10 but will have to see how the rest pans out.

I've been playing it, and quite literally my only critique is that the benches should be a little closer to the bosses. It is better than I could have imagined. The atmosphere, combat, art direction, music, movement, characters, enemy design, everything. It's incredible.

Always someone who gives it a score of 1. Someone must really hate games.

Might have to take the leap on this one I was planning on getting borderlands but no console reviews is making me want to wait a while. And it’s 50 bucks cheaper cannot beat that

Can anyone give me a ballpark of how the difficultly is? It looks great but I don’t really want anything overly frustrating right now

Do we think the 1/10 is the same person every time? Is there someone with an account on this site with a game catalogue full of 1/10 games?

As a metroidvania, if this and hollow knight aren’t 10’s, then I don’t know what is. Everything about them is top notch.

Tough decision. The game itself is a fantastic little platformer, but there’s more to the overall experience than just that. The trophy list is a tedious nightmare of a chore for trophy hunter completionists, which really drags down the fun factor. You could design the perfect luxury sports car, but if you decide to make the steering wheel out of razor blades it’ll ruin an otherwise magnificent driving experience. I’d give the game itself an 8 or a 9, the trophy list a 1 or a 2, which means the whole thing averages out somewhere in between.

Started at about a 7/10 and it keeps getting better and better and better. Easy 9/10 so far, and I’m only at the end of act 1

Im in act 2 and it keeps getting better and better.
It could end up being my favorite Metroidvania of all times.

If it wasnt for Clair Obscure, it would be already my GotY.

Perhaps I’m overthinking this, but even if I buy a game right on release day I could never rate it after only 6/7 days. Why not ask for the scores a month after release?

Just like the first one it is a good game per se but nothing near to the the praise it gets.

Checkpoint system and losing "souls" mechanic are awful and doesn't belong in a metroidvania. Some enemy types are just downright ridiculous and annoying.
I am 10 hours in and I will quit the moment frusturation&time I spend surpass the enjoyment I get.

Nothing to do with this but I am not in love with C33 too. It's too a good game but I disagree with the higher praise it gets.

Guess I am in the minority this year. It's sad that nobody talks about The Alters which is a better game than both.

@Nalim I think that some thinks they are funny but the only thing funny about them is their micropenis

Disclaimer that I'm not a huge fan of the first Hollow Knight.

It's really interesting to see the poll currently split almost equally between 10, 9, and 7. That feels right to me — some people will love it, and some will only think it's okay, and that's fine! I don't think anyone can argue that it's not well-made.

For my money, I'd rank it between a 7 and 8 so far! Which is higher than I expected for me. The brutal difficulty is making it hard for me to want to stick with it (as was the case for the first game), but I really love the art, music, and story so far and want to experience more of it. We'll see if I can get through to the end!

Just out of curiosity, how does this work? Both are the same scale, so 8/10 = 4.0/5 and 3.5/5 = 7/10?

Haven't played it yet. Never even played the series. But now I wanna give it a shot.

It's a good game and I'm definitely enjoying it, but I think the difficulty is in a lot of the wrong places. There's way to much backtracking over long sections of the map through tedious performing sections when you die, particularly the red bouncy flower things. I can get through them, but it's not something I enjoy doing over and over very much. I wonder if the game would be much better if you could just save at the begining of each screen, or at least have 1 portable bench you can use once between main benches.

I gave it an big fat average gamepass 5, I just don't see the appeal,it bored me to death.

Over 45 hours in and it's easily 10/10. Incredible music, fantastic bosses and the new tools and ways to traverse Pharloom are absolutely excellent!

Great/excellent in my opinion.

Really addictive and offers quite a challenge but overcoming the challenge is what makes it fun.

Also I find Hornet much more fun to play compared to the Knight from the original Hollow Knight.

It's not a perfect game, there's no perfect game. But Silksong is as close as it can be.

@Logonogo it can be kind of up and down. There are some enemies and bosses that hit for two health that’ll while the floor with you, but for the most part enemies hit for one. Most of the enemies aren’t too bad as long as you study their patterns. Plus, the more abilities you unlock the easier it can get.

I play the vast majority of games on normal and I haven’t found it too difficult, but on the other hand, my best friend plays a lot of games on hard and he was saying it was really tough. The platforming can be difficult but I haven’t encountered anything I thought was unfair, that’s with me being about twelve hours in, so far. I hope that helps!

There are only a handful of games I'd ever rate 10/10. For me that's going to be something like Super Mario World, FF7, Legend of Zelda, MGS, maybe GoldenEye for what it did for multiplayer... I know there are others, I would just need to think for a minute.

Those are all games I'll remember forever, that I could play every day and not get tired of, real masterpieces. They're games that I feel like I could play through just in my head and I won't ever forget them.

Silksong is a very good game but I find some of the enemy designs and also the level designs to be cheap and frustrating. Otherwise it's great. Maybe an 8 for me. Not a 10 though--like I don't think I'll play it again or remember much about it in a few years.

It's an 8/10. Overall it's really good but I did encounter enough minor issues to lower my score to a 8

I got sidetracked with Ragebound and Shinobi but I'll be back at it later tonight.
I have zero complaints so far. The world is much more well-realized than something like Outlaws, for instance.

10/10 Best metroidvania i have played.

But i can understand if someone find it too punishing and rate it a bit lower.

@Logonogo you’re welcome. If you decide to get it I hope you enjoy it, I’m absolutely loving it, and I’m someone who didn’t quite understand the hype of the original (admittedly, this game has me wanting to go back and try it again though).

They are not the same rating systems in my eyes, like how many stars is 7.5? Right? Something lower than 8/10 would be unfair in 10 point system while on the 5 system, it's definetely doesn't deserve 4 stars.

At first I was unsure. Similar but somehow very different from Hollow Knight. Felt uneasy in both senses of the word. Was I enjoying it? Hmmm. Trying to figure out what I thought.

As I found my footing I settled in and as things progressed the mercury in my enjoyment-o-meter started to rise, and it hasn't stopped rising even as I approach end game. Actual end game, if you know what I mean, beyond Act 2 kind of end game. And I'm deliriously happy at this point. It gets good and then it gets better and better.

All those design decisions you cried about early on - the runbacks, the lack of benches, the rosary economy, the double damage, the constant adds and hellish combat gauntlets - are all very specifically there to create a very singular type of game that knows exactly what it is doing at every turn. The cruelty is almost comical at times. Oh you thought that fake bench and that runback was bad? Here's one that's much worse! And now here's one that's MUCH MUCH worse (true explorers will know what I mean). But it's just so good. You can do it. You can live in that panicked state of a single flashing heart, stranded and surrounded, no bench to be found and a pocket full of rosaries. You can embrace it. It's exhilarating to feel like this. Don't be scared to feel like this. It's a rare thing in a video game to make your heart pound this way. You come to realise that all those things that made you feel so uneasy at the start of the game and made you question whether you were enjoying it or hating it are because you're experiencing something that most modern video games simply cannot conjure up no matter how hard they try, and you're not familiar with the feeling any more. The feeling of playing a truly great game that will challenge you, drive you crazy, show you wondrous things and snatch them away, taunt you, give you mobility and power and complete control, slap you about the face and laugh about it, before finally deferring to your mastery and revealing itself completely.

God I love it so much.

@Scottyy I honestly don’t understand the difference. A 1–10 scale using whole numbers is equivalent to a 1–5 scale using half steps, only doubled.

Edit: I understand it if you use half steps on a 1-10 scale, like the 7.5/10. But that’s not the case here, it’s 8/10 so 4.0/5.

It's not same scaling type for me so just multiplying by 2 doesn't cut it. Both of them have their own consideration in my mind. So don't bother with math.

Man - this game is obliterating me and the difficulty spike is crazy- just made it to Sinner’s Road and how this game suddenly went from challenging to ruthless has me frustrated- not enjoying this one as much as Hollow Knight >< but music and art direction? Amazing

Big disappointment, look I like hard games and I know that if I can’t do a certain section I need to either take a break and come back with a clear head or I need to explore other areas and look for upgrades to my toolset. This game is not fun because of how you are constantly taken back to the last resting spot after a death that it becomes repetitive and boring having to retrace your steps to get back to your death spot only to die again. I have not got the patience or perseverance with this as I just can’t stand having to take the same route back to the spot I messed up over and over again.
