Fans have been incessant about bringing back the beloved Skate series, and though it took some time, EA listened, and is today launching the latest entry in the skateboarding series in early access on PS5 and PS4.
Developer Full Circle Studio has revived the franchise, turning it into a free-to-play skateboarding sandbox.
Though it launches in early access form, meaning it's unfinished, what we can tell you is that the game feels right. The unique "Flick-It" system that defines the series is present and correct, and it feels like slipping on an old pair of Vans.

For those unfamiliar, you perform the majority of tricks using the right stick; bring it down and then straight up to pop an ollie, or aim it to the left or right for a heelflip or kickflip.
There's a lot of complexity to be layered on top of that, but that's the gist. It feels fantastic and intuitive, and on a basic level, leads to a more grounded experience than that found in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
That being said, it's not super realistic either. You're able to climb practically anywhere in the open world city, San Vansterdam, and from high vantage points you can leap down and perform insane, impossible stunts.
It's silly, but a lot of fun to goof around with.
The game already features lots of missions and challenges to complete, earning you XP in each district of the city and unlocking even more to do.
You can definitely tell it's early access and not totally finished; for example, the visuals, while stylised, are on the rough side, and the open world can feel sparse. Still, we expect the game will only get better as the developer makes tweaks during this early access phase.

It's designed as an always-online social space, populated by hundreds of other players at a time. Beyond the many challenges you can partake in, this very much a make-your-own-fun sort of game. There are even spots where you can build using various props, like ramps and rails.
It's definitely worth a try at the very least โ it's free, after all.
Will you be hopping into Skate to take it for a spin? Have you been waiting for the series to return ever since Skate 3? Discuss in the comments section below.

Canโt wait to jump in with a larger player base.
Been playing for maybe 2 years now and had a blast with so many different testers.
Public servers are going to be great ๐๐ป
Early Access shouldn't be a thing on consoles to be honest.
@Zeke68 I think it's fine in this case. They've been iterating on this game behind-the-scenes for years. Now they're just going to continue iterating on it in public.
It's a live service game so whatever you play today will have changed quite a bit next year anyway.
Free to play? Why do i have to pay in the Netherlands? Oh wait, i found it! My appolegies. ๐
Im the idiot rolly pollying everywhere.
Got it downloaded, ready to shred later๐ฅ
I've missed Skate so much. It's wild we didn't get a single new game, collection remaster, or even a basic port of the original trilogy during the PS4/XB1 generation.
Played it for 45 minutes and all it did was make me go back to Skate 3.
Downloading and very excited. The way AndyTHPS is talking about it, sounds like itโll be perfect to just free roam in, which is what I did in Skate 3 for years.
You had me but lost me at โalways-onlineโโฆ
I'll try it out, but it is NOT inspiring that it's going to be free-to-play, this screams to me that they are not confident in its quality or ability to draw players. Judging from the new steam reviews the game is not in a good state and the devs have not listened to the fans
Not to be a negative Nancy, but this is cheap, sewage runoff trash. The controls are somehow horrible, itโs always online so you get the pleasure of other skaters jutting and glitching around you at all times. I just completed one mission and now it says more missions will be added in the future. But itโs all good because there is an obligatory, predatory microtransaction fuelled shop that offers clothing, rotationally, for real money.
God damn I hate 2025. Just offer us a full price quality product like they did three times 20 years ago.
Hereโs to hoping we get an actual game in 2040.
I have literally thousands of hours of playtime on the 3 EA Skate games, but this one looks so awful I thought it was a skateboarding expansion for the Sims.
Seems like i am not the target audience anymore...
Dont know about the game. Loved the trailer though.
I started it with the expectation to not like it. Seems like I do though. A free to play skateboard game actually makes a lot of sense.
After putting about 3 hours into it I like it a lot so far.
The art style isn't really my favorite but the gameplay is fun and that's what has me hooked lol
So upset. I really want to be enjoying it, or at least trying it, but when I go to play it there is a random ea account email that is said to be linked to my PS5. It doesnโt give me an option to select a different ea account, itโs just telling me that one is mine and itโs not. Iโve never played an ea game on my ps5. Last ea game I played was a way out on my ps4 and I have no clue if that required an account to play
And while weโre here talking about skate, I know we get too many remakes but, I would love a remake of the first skate. It would make sense too because you couldnโt get off your board in that one. So just remake that but with the qol stuff of 3 and would be like a new game. Release that while actually working on skate 4.
@get2sammyb Yeah, that's a better scenario for EA tbh. But someday it should be a "releasecandidate" right?!
@Kiefer-Sutherland same. Didn't think that would be the highlight of my day, but there you go.
When they announced they'd be making another Skate, I never would have imagined we'd be getting it in the form of an early access game that we have to watch come together over however long it'll take until they remove the early access label. Makes you miss the days when devs just made games that were feature-complete with basic QOL updates instead of whatever it is we're doing now. It's cool that it's finally in the hands of the playerbase, but it's not cool that we waited so long for what's essentially a live service beta. At least it's free!
Can't even play the dam game to see if it good or not.
Ea stupid 1 time forever account system for some reason has resorted back to a old email in which has been deactivated and does not even exist anymore.
And I've been locked out completely, for about a year now.
Stupid me for signing up years ago with old emails I guess, in what world is it that its harder to change a linked account with psn than changing my bank? Haha
I had a go of this and it's probably something I'd keep on my PS5 to dip in and out of.
