The spirit of SEGA Genesis sports games is alive and well, with sequel Mutant Football League 2 targeting a 10th December release on the PS5.
You may recall the original Mutant Football League, released in 2017 on the PS4, was created by Michael Mendheim, a veteran from the 16-bit Mutant League Football and Mutant League Hockey days.
This follow-up, described as a type of “anti-Madden”, promises a “brutal, darkly comedic eight-on-eight arcade-style action-packed football game”.
The twist is that referees here don’t just “blow calls – they get blown up”.

You’ll be able to murder your opponents out on the field, and if you’ve bribed the officials effectively, you’ll get away with it.
The full game will feature 32 made-up pro-league teams and a further four fictional minor league squads. You’ll also be able to draft your own roster and create your own franchise.
In addition, an in-depth Franchise mode will allow you to recruit and train rookies over multiple seasons, building a formidable Dynasty that will dominate the Mutant Football League for years to come.
Here’s what the blurb says:
“In Mutant Football League 2, you’ll create your dream team of dirty dudes and customize your team’s player composition and tactics. The right team is your ticket to gridiron glory, and you’ll have to define their playing style. Will you deploy a relentless offensive by mutilating the opposition? Or will you slice through the enemy’s defense with razor-sharp, brainy manoeuvres? It’s up to you to show the world your prowess and become a true MFL legend. Under your guidance, these mutants will rise from scrubs to legends, crushing the competition with style and savagery across Mutant Football League 2‘s single-player Season, Dynasty Supreme franchise mode, and online multiplayer.”
With commentary from NBA Jam’s Tim Kitzrow and a refined overall gameplay experience, this certainly looks like one for fans of arcade sports to keep an eye on.
