We're Not Entirely Sold on Sony Funded PS5 Shooter EXILEDGE Yet 1

With Lost Soul Aside almost out on PS5, all eyes are beginning to turn to the next phase of Sony’s China Hero Project, which was conceived to nurture Chinese development talent and assist on games made for a global audience.

EXILEDGE, announced a little while ago, is one such project that PlayStation has decided to finance, and at ChinaJoy 2025 this weekend, developer Enigmatrix showed off some new gameplay.

As was the case when this title was revealed last year, the production values are through the roof, with some truly breathtaking vistas on display. But we’re not sold on the gameplay just yet.

In one scene, the lead character is shown riding through the scenery on a motorcycle, which looks fine if a little slow. Perhaps that’s for the purposes of the trailer.

Once the gameplay gets going, though, it all looks a little stodgy to us. The shooting and dodging doesn’t have the flow of, say, a Returnal – which we appreciate is a very high bar, but that’s the type of title the gameplay will be judged against.

We quite like the mixture of firearms and fisticuffs, and the finishing move right at the end of the trailer, which appears to include some kind of summon, looks fun. But overall, without the controller in our hands, we’d say it all looks a bit flat and, dare we say it, generic.

There’s work to be done on this one, then, but with Sony footing the bill we have confidence it could come together.
