The Last of Us TV Show Team Split on One More Season or Two 1

HBO still hasn’t decided whether it’ll conclude The Last of Us 2’s story in one season or two.

Speaking with Variety, boss Casey Bloys said director Craig Mazin is “still working out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season” that wraps up the plot. “I’m following Craig’s lead on that,” he added.

Despite attracting a bunch of Emmy awards overnight, fan sentiment has been fairly mixed on Season 2 for a variety of reasons, ranging from pacing through casting and beyond.

If we had to gauge the temperature surrounding the show, we really don’t think there’s the appetite for two more seasons, but that’s just our read on the situation.

This is all compounded by series creator Neil Druckmann’s decision to step away from the project and focus on his day job as Naughty Dog boss.

Bloys commented on that, explaining that while it was good to have the auteur on board, he believes Mazin et al are well positioned to continue the plot:

“It was fantastic to have Neil involved. A lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. It’s a really big job that he’s got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that. But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show. And obviously Craig is a pro, so I think we’ll be in excellent shape. I’m not worried at all.”

The executive was also asked about whether the changing cast could impede interest in future episodes of the show, with Pedro Pascal’s Joel now brutally out of the picture.

“Not from a marketing perspective, because I think the title is obviously helped by the video game, and now the first two seasons is pretty well established,” he explained. “I kind of appreciate shows that take things and do a show from a different point of view.”

Bloys confirmed, by the way, that Season 3 is targeting a 2027 release date.
