Update #4 []: Unfortunately, the biggest update of the day comes from Perfect Dark developer The Initiative. Confirmed in an internal email from Matt Booty that's been made public by Windows Central, the spy game has been cancelled and the developer is shutting down.
Matt Booty said:
We have made the decision to stop development of Perfect Dark and Everwild as well as wind down several unannounced projects across our portfolio. As part of this, we are closing one of our studios, The Initiative. These decisions, along with other changes across our teams, reflect a broader effort to adjust priorities and focus resources to set up our teams for greater success within a changing industry landscape. We did not make these choices lightly, as each project and team represent years of effort, imagination, and commitment.
Update #3 []:
In another update from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, it's reported Forza Motorsport developer Turn 10 Studios has been hit hard by Microsoft's wave of layoffs, with almost 50% of all staff losing their jobs. Additionally, Call of Duty teams Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games are reported to have suffered cuts.
Update #2 []:
Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reports a second game has been cancelled as part of the wave of Xbox layoffs. He states an MMORPG from Zenimax Online Studios (the developer behind The Elder Scrolls Online), which has been in development since 2018, has been cancelled.
Update #1 []:
According to VGC, sources tell the outlet that UK studio Rare has been affected by the layoffs, and as a result, the long-in-development Everwild has been cancelled. While this title wasn't announced for PS5, there would have been a good chance of a port had the game made it to market.
Original Story: The significant layoffs affecting the Xbox division — first reported earlier this week — have now begun, says Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier.
In a fresh article, Schreier claims that King, the developer behind Candy Crush, is losing 10% of staff, which equates to roughly 200 jobs. Meanwhile, some employees at Zenimax have also been informed they are being laid off. Zenimax is the company that Starfield, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls developer Bethesda is a part of.
Xbox employees based in the USA are expected to learn of job cuts later today.
Layoffs are affecting the entirety of Microsoft today, with as many as 9,100 people across the whole company cut, according to The Seattle Times.
Via Windows Central, an internal email sent to employees has been made public. Penned by Xbox lead Phil Spencer, he told staff: "Today we are sharing decisions that will impact colleagues across our organization. To position Gaming for enduring success and allow us to focus on strategic growth areas, we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft’s lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness."
Spencer states he recognises these layoffs come at a time when Xbox has "more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before", but choices must be made for continued success:
I recognize that these changes come at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before. Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger. The success we're seeing currently is based on tough decisions we've made previously. We must make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities. We will protect what is thriving and concentrate effort on areas with the greatest potential, while delivering on the expectations the company has for our business. This focused approach means we can deliver exceptional games and experiences for players for generations to come.
He then thanks those who are losing their job as a result of today's layoffs:
Prioritizing our opportunities is essential, but that does not lessen the significance of this moment. Simply put, we would not be where we are today without the time, energy, and creativity of those whose roles are impacted. These decisions are not a reflection of the talent, creativity, and dedication of the people involved. Our momentum is not accidental—it is the result of years of dedicated effort from our teams.
Following the decision to port Xbox titles over to PS5 and Nintendo Switch, the hardware manufacturer is more of a third-party games company than ever before. As such, the potential studio closures can affect future PS5 titles. As this is a developing story, there will unfortunately be updates throughout the day of more people losing their jobs and even possible studio closures.

This generation has been crap and so hard for all the thousands of employees that have been laid off.
I remember the aspirations I had to be part of the gaming industry. Don’t love being a bank manager. But it’s stable work. For now…
Also have being following this and see so many people who say “Why should I care? I’m about the games. Not about the people who make them.” Cruel behavior. And Xbox had all that money to buy studios for what? To keep the games multi platform and shrink the studios? Phil has been a huge detriment to the Xbox brand!
Awful stuff. Wishing everyone the best.
Spencer's statement makes me mad, but I'll leave it at that for now.
This is the residual effect of the Game Pass business model not working. Also surprised that the Xbox execs including Phil have not been fired given what’s happened so far.
@mwatcher the higher ups don’t care because their pockets aren’t shrinking. But yeah. This occurrence is what I’ve always said about the Game Pass/Netflix model. It’s terrible for industries.
Translation: AI can write match-3 games no problem
Weren’t people touting how much money candy crush and mobile was printing for Microsoft?
Not just gamepass effect, but xbox’s games have been mediocre at best and generally agenda driven. Like more and more of western games, its not a shocker less people are buying them. For xbox more people care about their 360 and OG games being ported than their new and upcoming lineup
Microsoft are bad for the gaming community, full stop.
Feeling dreadful for everyone losing their job today through no fault of their own. Less said about Phil Spencer the better, what a rotter he is.
Curious to see if they close any of the smaller studios down. Double fine and the studio behind South of nowhere could be at risk.
@mwatcher They're delivering value to shareholders. Sadly that's all that matters.
This generation has truly been unforgiven for the devs, not matter which side you are on.
Let’s buy studios and then lay tons of those people off, or close down the studios altogether.
To be fair, letting people go is common in any business, but it’s how Microsoft goes about nearly all of their decisions. And let’s not forget Phil Spencer - I just can’t trust what this man says.
Makes sense, their stocks are trading at an all-time high for the company, the last 4 months of straight growth is a telling sign when a company needs to let people go.
Wait.
Oh my... so Microsoft wasn't the savior of the common folk that some claimed they were as they were buying up all the publishers?
Just saw the news on Bloomberg TV (I watch it b/c it's free) and came here to get all the details.
The fact that Phil can write all of that and not have it end with him committing seppuku tells you all you need to know, not just about him, and Microsoft, but the world at large. We're all disposable and the big wigs just keep getting paid.🤑
I wont have many fond memories overall, when it comes to this console generation, no matter what platform...
Considering the profits MS make on gaming this is beyond a joke. Hey Phil how about take a massive pay cut? Same goes for Bond and Booty.
@darrenhupke Just looked up their stocked after reading your comment. Yup, up about 33% in just the past 2 1/2 months, 380 to 500. And today announcing 9,000 layoffs will likely put it up even higher. 🤑
What a classic Phil Spencer move to pat himself onthe back before kill the livelihood of thousands of people.
Go f*ck yourself Phil.
With all that money 💰 Microsoft got you think it's easier to keep all those people. Layoffs are crazy.word up son
All part of the consolidation/enshitification that goes with Microsoft buying up so much of the industry that far too many people were clapping like lobotomised seals for.
I love that Phil boasts about how well they're doing while sacking them. Zero empathy just corp PR speak and a smug smile while giving the middle finger.
How is Spencer still around? Xbox is in tatters and its mostly down to him and his stupid choices.
those 68 billion gotta come from somwhere...
Always a shame when layoffs happen in the industry. Also Spencer feels no remorse for those that were let go, as long as the shareholders are happy, that's all that matters to him.
Happy 4th of July
-- Phil Spencer
Damn they went after Rare.... they should of stayed with Nintendo
Stories that are being updated now are saying Xbox isn’t getting the brunt of the 9000 layoffs. They are mostly coming from other parts of the company:
“Microsoft's gaming operation isn't bearing the brunt of the layoffs this time around — but many of Xbox's operations in Europe, including King (Candy Crush) and ZeniMax (Fallout) have also seen reductions.”
So people need to stop acting like it’s 9000 cuts at Xbox. It isn’t!
And I thought it was bad for the line judges at Wimbledon
It's the problem with the rise of ai, its a cheaper alternative. I wouldn't be surprised if more companies followed suit.
Xbox are a shambles at the moment under Phil, from collapsing console and game sales, to laying off staff in their thousands all whilst their master plan is simply to put an Xbox sticker on everything to claim its their's. Whilst their only "growth" under Phil has been to spend billions on other publishers to inflate their user numbers and revenue
Edit: Just seen Perfect Dark has been cancelled. What an absolute joke Xbox are
@awp69 Even if only 10% of the layoffs are related to the Xbox gaming division, we're still looking at 1000 developers without a job. I doubt the already mentioned cuts at Rare, King, and Zenimax account for all of it. Wouldn't be surprised if Ninja Theory and Compulsion are affected in a major way, too.
The news is coming in hot and fast, so it won't be long until we find out.
People here saying this gen is the worse because Microsoft incompetence is hilarious.
MS buying Rare was one of the worst things to happen to gaming. Only reason they haven't closed them is because of SoT.
There were over 2,000 employees at King working on mobile games or Candy Crush!!?? What. The. F…
@carlos82 no @awp69 is saying the 9000 jobs are across Microsoft; not just Microsoft Gaming.
@awp69 It's not 9,000 people across Xbox, that would be half the entire division.
But it's still 9,000 people across Microsoft and that's bad enough.
The story is developing so we'll continue updating as soon as we know the full extent of the cuts to Xbox.
We just updated with the news about Rare and Everwild.
Very sensible business decision. When making record profits lay off a few thousand no-name, no-worth worker ants and you can pay the big cheeses even bigger bonuses! That's called a win-win situation.
Guess rare will forever be the sea of thieves devs. The price of live service, studios if they are successful are stuck with one title.
@AhmadSumadi I feel like we all know streaming/pass services are terrible for the inherent value of the product. It’s just that consumers view it as such a good deal they don’t mind the overall product degrading and the effect it has on the value of the workforce to the producing entity. Huge bummer. Game pass has crazy value to certain consumers but will long term be viewed as a net negative by many.
@MrPeanutbutterz you would have thought we would have learned when the same thing happened to the music and movie industries in the past decades.
@B0udoir Where is the incentive to deliver value for your company when they cut you anyway?
@IamJT You'd think, but here we are. I find a lot of people into videogames seem to exist in their own bubble, and when crap like this - a thing that happens in any industry subject to consolidation - there's somehow surprised Pikachu face all-round.
Wow the statements in that email are really something!
I understand he has to acknowledge how strong the company is. But leading with how great their numbers, platform and profits are, just makes what follows sound extra nasty!
I knew this kind of thing was going to happen from the instant I learned about gaming subscription services many years ago. Then, everyone loses their mind if a game is priced higher than $60, while also complaining that the developers are underpaid and overworked. Then layoffs happen and everyone is surprised.
This is what happens when an entertainment medium is locked at a price, despite rising costs not just in production but also salaries paid to the people producing it rising. That's why the prices are going above $60!
Ya'll act so surprised but then freak when the prices go up. Yeah, that is how prices work - they go up over time. It is called inflation. The only thing on planet earth that hasn't really moved up in price in the last 30 years is video games.
Rare ceased to be the god tier SNES developer I knew them as the moment they were sold. Perhaps a little before, actually, as I found their N64 games very hit-or-miss. Didn’t most of the good talent leave/get poached at some point prior to the company being sold in order to join Retro Studios?
MS just doesnt seem to know what it wants to do anymore, and should just become 3rd party publsher
Perfect Dark has also been cancelled per Jez Corden.
An utter disgrace from Xbox/Microsoft.
I can' image how it feels to have five, six, seven years of your life's work wiped out by the strike of an accountant's pen. I will never understand the financial imperative to cancel a game after thousands (potentially hundreds of thousands) of person-hours have been expended. My heart goes out to the developers affected.
I hope everyone affected lands on their feet quickly. I didn't trust M$ in 1995 and I still don't.
That Phil Spencer statement should have been a resignation letter.
"You cannot cut your way to growth" is a favoured phrase of a VP at the company I work for. However, my employer also has the predilection to buy smaller companies, so cuts do actually happen, and every time a "this is for company growth. We thank those being cut" email goes out.
And that's the rub here - it's pitched as a move necessary to increase growth, to improve products and services, but that's just the usual smoke and mirrors. What we're seeing is a company that spent way too much money, that's seen profits fall below expectations, so is cutting jobs to save money and artificially boost year-end revenue by reducing operating costs.
In the gaming industry, Nintendo seem to be the only company that understand that you can't cut your way to growth.
@Oram77 “ they should of stayed with Nintendo”
Y’all act like Nintendo wanted them… Nintendo didn’t want them. If they did, they would have paid the asking price. Rare wasn’t worth the money, and only Microsoft was foolish enough to pay it thinking afterwards they also got Donkey Kong. Rare was dead company before the purchase and Nintendo knew it. 🤷
Was this article meant for the pure Xbox site?
@ZeroSum "that's seen profits fall below expectations"
Except the numbers were well ahead of expectations, not below. Have you seen their stock price, up 30% the past 3 months. MS didn't need to fire 9,000 people right now.
@Lowdefal The revenue wasn't $23Billion, that was the net profit. The revenue was $70 billion. For 3 months. So over $7B per month net profit. And they just fired 9,000 people.
"Microsoft reported nearly $26 billion in net income on $70 billion in revenue for the March quarter. The numbers were well ahead of Wall Street’s consensus, keeping Microsoft ranked as one of the most profitable companies in the S&P 500 index, according to data compiled by FactSet."
https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/02/microsoft-laying-off-about-9000-employees-in-latest-round-of-cuts.html
The class war is completely over and the working people completely lost. 😩
Here come the 15 million white collar jobs cull due to ai over the next 12 months. Hold onto your hats
@Toot1st This site is an Xbox…
@darrenhupke as ass backwards as it is... Yeah, it does mean that, otherwise how can they show growth and get their bonuses at the end of the financial year? Corps suck.
@get2sammyb yes me too, Spencer’s message is totally heartless.
This is a disgrace now. I don't think we're even done yet...
@Toot1st Xbox releases games on PS5 and other platforms. This is as relevant as if EA or Ubisoft or others were doing the same thing.
MS could have raised the price of windows and subsidized gamepass by 0.01$ to generate more revenue quickly. It sucks for these professionals. Hence forth those working within the gaming industry must have one foot in and one foot out mindset. It sucks because MS has the money but it’s all about projecting good numbers on MS PowerPoint to shareholders.
I feel so sad for the employees losing their job I hope they fond something else I know all companies do it I they start at the top fire some of these greedy money obsessed ceo and. Executives
@Toot1st It's gaming news no?
An email from Xbox Studios Head, Matt Booty, dated December 2019, suggested Microsoft was "in a very unique position to be able to go spend Sony out of business."
2020 email from Phil to Satya before Series X / PS5 launch:
“We have a better product than Sony does, not just on hardware but equally important on the software platform and services on top of the hardware. We have the ingredients of a winning plan."
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It has begun! Someone said once!
"Xbox is great. I'm great. Enjoy the unemployment line." - Lord High Commander Diety of all things on this planet Phil Spencer
@rjejr This. Any student of history will be wondering when the next class revolution happens and what form it will take.
Surely people can only take this crud for so long.
Silent quitting on a massive scale? I dunno.
Terrible news for those affected and it's going to set such an awful precedent going forward.
@get2sammyb @Lowdefal
PushSquare ran previous articles on Xbox layoffs before they started publishing games on Playstation.
Layoffs are a good reason to give MS a kicking.
Cutting 50% of Turn 10 Studios is insane, this is after they sold millions of copies on PS5 of just an old game of theirs.
NO WAY, Perfect Dark was like the only Xbox game I wanted, are you actually kidding me!!!!
The initiative shut down and Perfect Dark cancellation is going to hit the hardest. This is a bad day for Microsoft and should be a huge deterrent for them buying any more major studios/publishers going forward.
Dang xbox's first AAAA studio is gone. In a serious such a shame, game looked cool
I feel sorry for all the people losing their jobs, going through redundancy is never good, especially when the people in charge will brag about record profits in due course.
The sad thing for the gaming world is the amount of ips that are about to lay dormant.
@Juanalf It was Playground who made Forza Horizon 5, Turn10 only make the Forza Motorsport games which the last one flopped and got some bad criticism.
This just got worse and worse all day.
@elvisfan1 that's not true my brother got made redundant got £60k in his redundancy package went on holiday had a month off paid a lot of his mortgage then they re hired him a month later on a bigger salary. My friend got made redundant last week also got thousands she could've be happier!
@UltimateOtaku91 they didn't buy the initiative.
@Oram77 it's a playstation site they also have a another site called pure Xbox for Xbox news
@Toot1st Aye my mistake they all must be jumping for joy.
The Initiative is one of the biggest gaming failures in recent memory. They was supposed to be a super team of industry vets, but it's clear that the project management was absolute ass. It didn't help either that Xbox's own project managers during that time were infamously "hands off" with their management style.
What a disaster all around.
The cost of gamepass.
@carlos82 they are due for record revenue this year that's not a business failing, I'm sure thier share holders are very happy
Perfect Dark and Everwild could've been great, but alas, we'll never know. Xbox's management is a total disaster and needs to change. Though, judging from their profits, they likely won't.
@viktorcode everwild was announced 6 years ago with nothing to show I don't think that's gamepass fault, I would have cancelled it too
Is that everything now or is there more to be announced, as im surprised to see Turn10, Rare and Zenimax get effected but not InXile and Ninja Theory.
Gutted over perfect dark being cancelled... for 2 reasons...
1. The game was showing lots of promise based on what they had shown off
2. Crystal Dynamics was involved in this and I have to assume that the new Tomb Raider game would have been further into development had they not been helping with Perfect Dark.
Perfect Dark cancelled as well looks like. That's huge, and shocking.
@Toot1st Hopefully you're kidding, but it's 100% relavant for numerous reasons, things like this affect the whole industry.
@UltimateOtaku91 I think InXile will be okay, but I'm stunned we haven't heard anything about Ninja Theory.
I honestly don't get full studio closures and game cancellations especially ones so far along. Why don't these companies like Microsoft, Embracer and Sony put these studios up for sale instead? That way they get some money out of it and people get to keep their jobs and the games continue to get worked on.
Several things can be true at once:
1. It is horrendous and gut-punching for people to lose a job and it has nothing to do with their behavior.
2. Yes, businesses/corporations care most about money. However it is also important to remember it is that same money that allows them to finance and attempt to create the games we play. Some publishers obviously do this better (and more morally) better than others but this is the way it works.
3. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting. Yes, gaming is more profitable than ever but is that for EVERY game? No, of course not. Several games flop and for a variety of reasons. It has to do with talent and the way that talent is managed as well. I’m not trying to shill for anyone but I do wonder why most of this only seems to happen in Western developers and publishers? Hmmm.
Bloomberg report makes it sound like the layoffs are turning into mass chaos with people being locked out of accounts with no notifications of what their status is. What a dumpster fire Xbox has become.
@RBMango is the Wasteland series that popular then? As that's pretty much all they've done lately. But I suppose Clockwork is their make or break game.
@Toot1st well of course revenue is up, if you spend billions on other businesses to include theirs, I'd be stunned if it didn't go up
Sad news, but overall i find myself just thinking about 1 thing in this updated article only, the MMORPG that was in development since 2018, so in development for around 7 years and gets cancelled, I mean how much money have they poured into this,.only to drop it? Surely after 7 years they must have something workable, seems really stupid
Xbox acquired Activision in October 2023. In the 21 months since they’ve had four mass layoffs. Cause and effect.
A game in development since 2018 has to be almost ready, surely? If not, why wasnt it cancelled a long time ago? Feel like it's too late to be getting any value out of cancelling it.
Even as somebody with no experience of perfect dark, what they showed of it looked really, really good imo.
Removed - inappropriate language
@UltimateOtaku91 I'm very unfamiliar with the Wasteland series, but I imagine those don't cost anywhere near as much to make compared to most of Xbox's other games. With Clockwork, as great as it looks, I have no idea what it would need to do to be "successful" in Xbox's eyes because their metrics of success seem to frequently change internally.
Wow, canceling Perfect Dark, that is *****.
@Juanalf Its playground who make Forza Horizon. Turn 10 made MotorSport, but after today, who knows what they do?
What an embarrassing disaster that is MS.
Maybe if Microsoft hadn't wasted all that cash on buying up studios and instead had invested in their already owned properties things might have been different.
Remember guys/gals, it's not about need. It's about greed.
“Perfect Dark cancelled and Forza Motorsport developer Turn 10 Studios has been hit hard by Microsoft's wave of layoffs, with almost 50% of all staff losing their jobs. Additionally, Call of Duty teams Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games are reported to have suffered cuts.”
As of July 2025, Microsoft has a market cap of $3.657 trillion USD, making it the world's second most valuable company by market cap.👀
A trillion dollar company and here they are cutting jobs left and right 🙄🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑👀
@UltimateOtaku91 I didn't even know till now that they had two whole studios dedicated to making racing games, now I wish they brought over the last Forza Motorsport.
I wonder what the cancelled game was that started development in 2018? 🤔
This is even worse than I ever thought it would be. I'm guessing they laid off whoever proofs Phil Spencer's statements because that "we're doing brilliantly but we're gonna fire you anyway" email is an absolute howler. Disgraceful stuff.
Watching Destin’s video I write this. Man…he’s like a complete different person. The smug smile is gone, the ‘this is good for gaming’ attitude regarding his bullish support for the ABK buyout has faded into nothingness. It’s almost like he finally realizes this level of industry consolidation is a bad thing after all, and that Microsoft is probably the worst umbrella to consolidate it under 🤔
Only thing gaming wise I’m saddened about is Perfect Dark. Really was looking forward to that but also obviously and more importantly my heart goes out to all those affected as well.
Gutted about Perfect Dark. Feel awful for all the workers fired, Rare especially need to be freed from MS.
Really feel for all those losing their jobs through no fault of their own
It seems Microsofts tactics of trying to build a monopoly to beat Sony was a gamble that these poor people are paying the price for
Holy hell, this is way worse than I anticipated. I know we talk about mismanagement a lot, but good god.
Not that I am looking forward to but didn't they just show perfect dark just a couple months ago? WTH?
Grim...just grim.
This really sucks. Feel for those looking for work. I wonder if anything would be different if MS hadn't bought so many big publishers / studios in the last few years.
@torne
The Perfect Dark gameplay shown was almost certainly a tech demo(proof of concept/vertical slice) like the Witcher 4 tech demo shown a little while back.
So the Initiative was officially formed in June 2018, as a AAAA studio, and all they ever created in 7 years was a Tech Demo. Also, 4 years of paying for Crystal Dymanics.
Hire fire hire fire hire fire, Microsoft has rinsed and repeated it so often now. Despicable corporate behaviour.
And cancelling Perfect Dark and closing the studio down should result in Spencer and other executives being fired, it was THERE IDEA! How many millions have they wasted on that?
My Game Pass sub is paid up till next year, and I got that dirt cheap so don’t care if I don’t use it, but going forward it will be Valve and Sony for me. Not going to support the others.
All that money x box got and closing studios make no sense.word up son
What a joke. This why the FTC pushed so hard to stop the Xbox and ABK merger. MS is going to continue doing rolling layoffs until these devs are a shell of there former selves.
@SeaDaVie doesn't mean it didn't show promise.
@torne Yeah, I think it looked good but likely weren’t able to execute on the full game, or otherwise this is a terrible and baffling choice
“Microsoft: Spectacularly Failing Upwards Since Windows Vista”
But seriously the company’s never been more successful, their net income increased by 7.5 billion since 2023, the year they acquired Activision/Blizzard. It’s easy to point to that as the cause here but I think it’s a bit more nuanced than just that, although I’m sure it has a part to play.
So how does Microsoft deliver value to shareholders when so many of their products appear to be stinking hot garbage water? Operating efficiency. They have a 46% operating margin, which is incredibly “efficient” to an investor. It’s kind of their style, and this is how they achieve it, gutting their divisions, hands off project management, all the things we rail on about are actually intentional things to this company, even if they’re resulting in substandard products. The point isn’t to make good software, it’s to sell shares of their company and making sure those shares continue to go up.
At the end of the day, it sucks, and Microsoft hoovering up companies was terrible for those companies and their products, because now their products are being made (or not made) the Microsoft way.
at some point when you look at Sarah Bond, Aaron Greenberg, Matt Booty and big daddy Phil and we've had yet another round of layoffs, you have to wonder why heads are not rolling and people getting fired or resigning.
Didn't M$ go on a video game company buying spree back in 2000, just to sell/close most of the studios a few years later?
I suspected history would repeat itself, and here we are.
@RobN Microsoft has been doing that ever since Windows first came out. It's their MO
Breaking..ALL xbox exclusives look to be getting cancelled shocking same will happen with Sony Nintendo ect the industry got greedy it's a bloody bath. Glad I mostly play older games
So sad about more people are going lose there jobs theyse people have family's to provide for no doubt not like companies care everyone is just a number in work which is sad shame about perfect dark as qell
Microsoft is like a donkey that bought up all the straw to place on its own back
This is ridiculous. Perfect Dark looked incredible. Moreover, it looked like it was in a playable state and could be released soon. At this point, I don’t want to hear any excuses any longer - this is becoming inexcusable, and it’s poor management from the top down. If I’m being honest, Microsoft - and by Microsoft I mean the Xbox brand itself - needs to do a complete restructure with their staff, particularly management.
I'm really curious about that canceled MMO, so many years in development only to get canceled.
I hope everyone who lost their jobs get a new one soon 🙏
I honestly feel that Phil Spencer should resign. His decisions have ultimately led to Xbox having to completely who there are as a company because he was unable to make them a competitive ecosystem.
@AdamNovice Agree, but Matt Booty needs a healthy chunk of the blame, too. His job is to manage first party studios and he has failed catastrophically at it. Both should be shown the door.
Why isn't Phil and Booty stepping down? They greenlight these games and studios, now they are saying "oops guess we shouldn't have approved these games my bad, y'all can leave now".
@wildcat_kickz Tbh the whole leadership needs looking but it starts from the top.
Hmm I wonder why only asian developers seems to be successful these days...
In the past 3 months, Microsoft stock has gone from $354.56 to $497.45. Today, the stock closed at $491.09. To say that Microsoft cares at all about their employees is a joke. It’s all about the Benjamins. (That’s the $100 bills, in US terms.)
But why cancel Perfect Dark? That game would be a major game—and potential $$ windfall—for Microsoft, XBox, et al. Hmm.
This has been a bloodbath. Phil Spencer's absurdly tone-deaf memo makes it even worse.
Not Perfect Dark, god damn it.
This is pretty awful, especially considering how well their games are now doing on PlayStation. I know the Series X and S have been massive bombs and Game Pass has essentially killed them, but did they really need to layoff so many and cancel games that have been in development for years like Perfect Dark?
I don't care what people think of PlayStation this generation. Yes, they are greedy just like the rest of them and they have had a pretty disappointing generation from a games perspective, but I'm glad I gave my Series X to my brother. I'll just play Xbox games on my PS5. This generation has killed any respect I had left for the brand.
@KilloWertz this generation blows
Perfect Dark (64) is probably my favorite FPS game of all time. Its reboot looked absolutely awesome to me and was THE reason I would have bought an Xbox One (prior to their multi-platform strategy coming to fruition). It would have been the ONLY Microsoft game I even CONSIDERED buying day one. It would have (in another universe) even pushed me to buy their hardware.
Its cancellation is wild to me. I have no interest in anything Microsoft now owns.
Phil Spencer is the worst thing to ever happen to Xbox. You cannot convince me otherwise.
My deep condolences and also pray for people who got layoff 🙏
@get2sammyb I’m upset to see anyone in any job field lose their livelihood. But the thing is there is a lot of talking out of both sides of the mouth on this topic on here. Many many people on here want Xbox to fold, both in hardware and even more. I read it daily. They don’t want to hear that Sony needs competition, even tho since 360 MS has been little competition outside of North America. So what do the readers on this site think will happen to those that work at Xbox if they get their wish and Xbox is no longer. They would get job losses in numbers that makes today look like nothing. I own all 3 consoles and anytime i speak highly of XBox on here i am met with harsh comments so i know how badly many would love to see them fold only to comment on this topic and say how awful it is to lose jobs, so which one is it? Sony has cut a lot of jobs as well just seems smaller cause they don’t own 40 studios. But i don’t want Sony to go out of business nor do i want to see the Concord team all fired. Thats what the messages should read. I thought Phil said it very well. Plus MS as a company is offering money, support and job aid to those that are cut, does any other platform holder do that?
@Shepherd_Tallon I'm in the US (just in case you're over there) and I've been posting
#RIPUSA 🇺🇸 #USspring
on BS for about 4 months now but so far nothing. We'll OK 11 million people had a parade 1 Saturday but that's about it so far. It's crazy to me we haven't seen more yet. At least take a day and protest on a Wednesday. General strike. Stop paying taxes - that can't come after all of us, they just fired the IRS.
I know that's politics but it's all connected. Dems should have paraded Luigi around like a hero like the GOP did w/ Rittenhouse.😝 US lost 30k jobs last month, the so called experts predicted a gain of 100k. AI isn't helping. Unions are shrinking. It's a mess 50 years in the making, thanks Regean, and it's all connected.
Major civilizations last 250 years. The US turns 250 next year. Coincidence? 🤷♂️
https://qhhsubiquity.com/6085/opinion/empires-fall-every-250-years-and-were-next/
PS - Do you work here? Saw your name in my Inbox and I thought I was in trouble again? 🤣
Good grief , phil spencer the hatchet man, when ms bought all those studios i said this would happen, its shi*te losing your job, hopefully they won't be out of work long.
@rjejr No I don't work here 😂
One thing in particular that you said there struck a chord with me - They can't come after all of us.
I'm in Ireland. During austerity here the government tried to introduce a water tax. The idea was that they would use that money to maintain the reservoirs, the pipes, the filtration systems. Everything.
The thing is, we already pay taxes which are used to maintain the reservoirs, the pipes, the filtration systems... So we would be paying a second time for the same thing.
Naturally there was uproar. The government said there would be fines and prosecutions for anyone who didn't pay.
So nobody paid.
It was like everyone had the same thought all at once - If none of us pay they can't come after all of us.
And it worked 🤷♂️ They realised how many people they would need to prosecute and just gave up, on that attempt at least.
Sometimes our refusal is our most powerful resource. Something as simple as a boycott, when used against the powerful, at the very least it frustrates them.
I don't do political alignment personally. I look at the issue, see whose plan makes the most sense re solving the issue, and I vote.
For me the divide has always been about the classes, and all the political divide does is keep us working class folks at each others throats.
Such gutting news for those developers affected. And I was rooting for Perfect Dark, so that’s such a huge bummer too.
@HonestHick Why you always gotta talk down on the users of this site bro?
Maybe if you get fanboy energy from some people here, it might be because you send out fanboy energy yourself
@LogicStrikesAgain think before you speak, cause i am also on Pure right now trying to remind people that many of those layoffs were from teams that announced games in 2018- 2022 and still have nothing going right. That will lose you a job in the entertainment business. Also, do people not say they want Xbox out of the industry on this site? Honest question, did i make that up? Do you skip past it? Or does someone telling the truth and not following status quo upset you? Cause nothing i said is made up. So i will make sure to tag you in the Xbox should quit, throw in towel, they won’t make new hardware etc etc posts and then i will ask well if that happens does that person have a job anymore? Microsoft is a poorly ran company that thinks size and money helps fix problems, there is a reason Apple runs circles around them as a company, and Sony does in gaming. But they do have things i like and i think the more in the business is for the better. But if you are on MY post to defend the people wishing failure only to then say how awful it is they don’t have jobs. You might want to reconsider whom to speak with. Cause i support this industry as much as possible and rip into people speaking out both sides of their mouths for a reason. No one ELSE WILL!
@RawnDawn
"I hope everyone who lost their jobs get a new one soon 🙏"
Amen to that brother.
@HonestHick
See, it’s the way you communicate that gives off that energy.
Every time is see a post of yours, it’s full of assumptions about other peoples intentions and motivations. You often make sweeping generalizations.
And here we are. Another overreactive reaction full of overblown claims and assumptions
I'm not even shocked that Everwild got cancelled, but it looked like a phenomenal game and it is soul crushing to see it dead. What an awful company.
@LogicStrikesAgain when someone say’s they want Xbox to fold or go out of business well this is a part of that move and they are here whining now. Well it can’t be both ways is my point. Again you haven’t denied seeing people say those things here and on other sites so i would assume you will meet me there with my assessment. Calling someone a fanboy with all 3 consoles that spends $1000’s a year on this hobby across 3 platforms could be called an assumption, yes?
@HonestHick I’m not calling you a fanboy. I’m saying your posts sometimes exhibit fanboy energy. If you don’t agree, that’s fine. That’s how it comes across to me.
You often talk about other peoples biases and contradictions without acknowledging your own. You don’t seem to want to engage with other people’s points at all. You don’t come across neutral to me, no matter how many consoles you own. I’m not talking about that, i’m talking about your energy and the way you communicate.
The reason im not engaging in the things you’re asking is because you come across as baiting people in to console war discussions. You don’t come across as if you’re willing to have a thoughtful conversation.
Not everyone on here wants Xbox to fail. You talk like all people here are just a bunch of fanboys, and you’re supposedly totally not one.
Actively ignoring many people here on this site who do have thoughtful and balanced opinions, with which you can have constructive conversations with.
I’m not calling you a fanboy. I mean, how could you be? You own all 3 consoles 😉
So I guess we are ignoring that PlayStation has been hit with more layoffs from its Visual Arts studio, that supported first party games, (frankly probably did more work than the studio Xbox closed) as well as a lot of Bungie staff being laid off and their game being put on hold
Or is this news on the Xbox news site you guys run? Because this seems a bit biased
Also as a side note those calling for Xbox to fail really don't have much in the way of intelligence, a monopoly is NEVER good no company should have zero competition as it always leads to greed and walking over customers, think prices are bad now just wait until Sony don't have to keep them low for competition
@LogicStrikesAgain i love many people on this site. There is always good and bad takes. My role is to call out the lack of common sense and total BS that seems to slide and become the norm. Not sure what my post on this topic is fanboying. If anything calling out the fanboys that wanted one of the big 3 to fail and they are to an extent only to then say how awful it is that people lost their jobs. You don’t see the BS in that? You choose to ignore my point and to a lesser extent defend them.seems odd cause you strike me as industry knowledgeable and respectful. Yore not calling me a fanboy with any merit cause my PS5 and Series X hasn’t been turned on since i got a launch Switch 2. I freaking love the switch 2 right now. It’s not perfect but it’s close in the way of what i wanted it to be. I don’t ignore anyone, if anything i read it all and that makes my takes that much easier and pronounced. But you knew that, and choose a topic in which you can’t defend and throw others lack of common sense on me. Which again i am surprised at, cause you seem more balanced than that. But let’s keep cheering on those that want industry pieces to fail and then gaslight them when people lose jobs and they cry. Does that make more sense? Would i be a touch more “popular” with that direction?
To be clear, I’m not talking about your stance on this whole lay off situation or what your thoughts on it are. I am talking about how you tend to communicate:
“My role is to call out the lack of common sense and total BS that seems to slide and become the norm”
Not sure if you see it, but this could be an example of bias awareness
“If anything calling out the fanboys that wanted one of the big 3 to fail and they are to an extent only to then say how awful it is that people lost their jobs”
Generalization. How do you know that the many commenters above who are concerned about the workers, are the same ones wanting Xbox to fail?
Also, are you actively ignoring all the fans that want Sony and their endeavours to fail? Can you see how your views might come across as one sided?
“Yore not calling me a fanboy with any merit”
Not calling you a fanboy at all. I’m saying the way you communicate sometimes has fanboy energy, what with all the bias, assumptions and sweeping generalizations you tend to make.
“But you knew that, and choose a topic in which you can’t defend”
Assumption. And don’t know what you mean by this. I’m not defending Xbox, Xbox haters, or any particular stance here. Just making a comment on the energy you send out.
“Let’s keep cheering on those that want industry pieces to fail”
Another assumption and generalization. You’re assuming everyone critical on something Xbox does, wants them to fail. People can be critical towards Xbox and still be concerned about people losing their jobs.
I think we can both agree that this has dragged on a bit too far. I apologize if my comments hurt your feelings. Lets just agree to leave it here and move on 🤝🏼
@Shepherd_Tallon " and all the political divide does is keep us working class folks at each others throats."
I wasted too much of my afternoon in conversations about that on Blue Sky. GOP is united on killing us all and liberals spend all their time arguing about whether a detention center is a concentration camp or not. The right is fighting wars while the left is fighting over semantics.😩
Glad the water battle worked out for ya all. A wins a win. 👍
@LogicStrikesAgain you talk in circles, i say what i see. You are saying things like assumptions generalizations. When i am simply saying i am calling out those that don’t even know the meaning of those words. Again you can defend them cause you’ve done that better than seeing my point. Which is sad but trivial . As for those that want to see any of the big 3 go down aren’t just beyond ignorant to me and i do my best on here and the other sites to “talk” with them. Cause we need all 3. But Sony fans across a lot of my social media outlets have a way to be sore winners. You learn early in life in sports to be a humble winner. Respect your opponents. Cause victory is hard and a privilege. You aren’t that person which i have said before. I respect most of your takes. Not this one. Cause you have been uphill from the start. If i was a fanboy or make fanboys comments you’d know it. Cause there is things about all 3 i could cut into. I tend to look past those as i already purchased those products and look past to enjoy them. This is AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN for those talking out both sides their mouths and they don’t even see it. Wish for failure and get failure results. Don’t cry about job loses and wish a brand to fail. You latch onto my comments cause they trigger you in some way. This thread has over 100 comments and it was MINE that you thought to uphill Half as* comment on? Thats cool. But be consistent with my posts in future. Cause i will never call a person a gamer that wishes bad on a brand bringing us entertainment and hard hard work in doing so. If you want to say you don’t like the way i talk, walk on son. But don’t disrespect the message. Makes you need to think before you reply.
@LogicStrikesAgain and if you don’t know that 40% of the posts on this site is Death to Xbox or Sony needs to only make single player games and not multiplayer. Then i will Venmo you $500 cash American for some glasses. Cause you ain’t seeing right.
People dont worry we will get BO14. Everwild looks more interesting then anything i have seen from Xbox.
@HonestHick
Me criticizing the way you tend to communicate here does not equal me defending or siding with those people you talk about. Just want to make that clear. That’s a just a leap you’re making, dare i say….an assumption?
Funny thing is, personally i don’t even judge MS for these lay offs. I actually tend to see things from a business perspective. Bet you didn’t assume that 😜
But there’s no point for me to keep replying, i feel like you’re all over the place. I think i just don’t get your communication style, and i’m sure that’s likewise. So let’s just leave it at that
XBOX is dead brand at this point.
Turn 10 to lose 50% of staff just wow go back in time and Microsoft saw them one of its top Devs, but with the poor Forza Motorsport 8 not doing as well as they wanted. It's clear why they lost staff but oh look share price is high and high execs aren't getting the chop huh
Spencer is really up his own arse ever since he took over it's gone down hill even more, Mattrick started the downfall Spencer came on to continue it I think. The guys before those 2 with Xbox 360 knew what they were making but to Phil it's not about cuts it's Microsoft shareholders still unhappy with the money coming back after investing the Acti/Blizz deal
Xbox just wrap it up close the shop because xb1 and this gen was an absolute dumpster fire just close the shop we reach the point that is painful hearing about the Ls xbox is taking
@HonestHick “ love many people on this site. There is always good and bad takes. My role is to call out the lack of common sense and total BS that seems to slide and become the norm.”
Not all hero’s wear capes 🤣🤣
MS still have forty games in production, its portfolio hasn't changed much. I won't miss these games. At least MS have an excuse, when you buy a 68 bill company, makes sense to me you are going to have to lay a hell of a lot of people off. MS more than likely have staff that can do the jobs already and don't need them. That's my take, might be wrong. I don't know if Sony/PS can say the same. I'm not a share holder so wouldn't know, sounds like there's a lot of shareholders in here though ^^
Xbox has just been horrendous all around:
@Anti-Matter absolutely not they will rise they have more money than anyone they can buy Sony whenever they want. Hopefully the next Xbox is an improvement. Lots of lay offs will happen I think gta 6 won't touch the likes of red dead redemption 2 & it'll be a big disappointment. People forget most of the talent left rockstar years ago just after red dead redemption 2 came out. I think it sells millions but still disappointments & many staff at rockstar will lose their jobs. Nobody in the gaming industry is safe. This is just the start
@Liamsufc1
XBOX is literally dead brand in my country Indonesia.
(Almost) Nobody even talking about XBOX SERIES X/S here in Indonesia.
My country Indonesia is PlayStation land with Nintendo as secondary popular franchise.
Btw, I only play kids games on both Nintendo and PlayStation machines.
@GamingFan4Lyf I'm glad to see you have a job again!
It's just sad to see the richest company in the world cutting costs by laying off the people who contributed to its success.
