PS Plus Push Square

PlayStation thinks the selection of PS5, PS4 titles it is bringing to the three tiers of its PS Plus service is improving "year over year".

As part of a wider interview with Game File, vice president of global services Nick Maguire spoke of the growth the firm is seeing across each PS Plus tier, with PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium recording "high growth".

The move a few years ago to offer three different tiers has apparently "surpassed" Sony's expectations, and allowed it to invest in the membership. PS Plus Premium has reportedly grown by 12% in the past 12 months, and Maguire says "the quality of games, hopefully people will appreciate, is probably improving year over year" as a result.

Earlier today, as part of the start of its 15th anniversary celebrations for PS Plus, Sony announced Diablo 4, The King of Fighters XV, and Jusant will be coming to PS Plus Essential in July.

While the quality of monthly PS Plus Essential games has remained fairly consistent, the more expensive PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium tiers can vary wildly. While the retro-focused Premium offering appeared to be picking up pace, recent months have proved disappointing in terms of the new titles added to the service.

Maguire said Sony is trying to add "one a month minimum", which is all the past two months of updates have had to offer. "Obviously there's a great emulation team in the background who are working on those with partners and internal teams, so there is a slightly longer lead time sometimes."

As for PS Plus Extra, the company tries to add PS5, PS4 games that are 12-18 months old and flesh that offering out with "four or five independent day-and-date titles" throughout the year. Most recently, the newest Remedy game FBC: Firebreak launched straight into PS Plus Extra.

"Because our strategy is about having something for everyone, therefore, by definition, there's going to be some people that don't want that particular month," said Maguire. "I think we'll continue to listen and learn about what gamers want and try to bring more value in for them."
