It's no secret that Hideo Kojima is a huge movie buff, and maybe that's why his studio's game is being adapted not just once, but twice.
As reported by Deadline, Death Stranding is getting an "adult-targeted" animated feature film in addition to the previously announced live-action flick.
The animated movie will be a collaboration between Kojima Productions and Line Mileage, and Aaron Guzikowski is on board to write the screenplay.
Guzikowski's previous works include Raised by Wolves, Papillon, and Prisoners.
Death Stranding's animated film will feature an original story set within its world, rather than directly following the first game's narrative.
"I love the world of Death Stranding, it’s so creatively freeing, so beautifully dark and yet hopeful; I’m so excited and honored that Hideo Kojima, whose work I’ve long admired, has invited me to dwell within his creation, to birth new stories into this fertile, mind-bending universe," Guzikowski says.
Again, this is a separate project to the already-announced live-action film, which is in production at A24 and being directed by Michael Sarnoski.

Oh its animated. Skip
Glad to hear this news a an original story. That makes this much more appealing than a second adaptation of the first game.
Was the series popular enough to get two adaptions?
I loved Raised by Wolves, gutted it got cancelled, but I guess other people weren’t quite so enamoured with it.
I'm happy that the Motion Picture industry finally can get introduced to the Strand type genre. I am interested in unique stories in that world from a perspective of someone who isn't a UPS driver. So fingers crossed.
If it’s real + CGI — hell yeah! But anime? Hard pass 🥱
I would love to care but I just cannot be arsed. Not everything has to be multimedia.
As a fan, I’m excited to see where this universe goes. I also loved Raised by Wolves (in my eyes, even the intro to the show was hitting me in the feels.)
I keep picturing the animated piece mentioned in this article looking like that 90s show “Reboot” LOL
Could have sworn I read an article about Death Stranding also getting an anime adaptation. Love the game, but this is quickly becoming too much.
Raised by Wolves was fine, some pretty interesting ideas that just felt underutilized, at least in S01 never bothered with S02.
I am over the moon with this news but I do find it hilarious that the MGS movie has been in hell for almost a decade at this point where as now we have 3 DS multimedia projects in the works already lmao.
I never heard Line Mileage studio or watch their works. But i'm interested to watch an original story which hopefully introduce new main character.

Oh its animated. Intrigued
@Lavishturtle sounds like you personally never played it, considering you’re saying it’s not even a game while it very much is exactly a game.
@SeaDaVie Yeah its too bad it got canned, the second season went batshit crazy and I wanted to see more of it.
I would have preferred a TV series by say, HBO. Anime adaptations are occasionally decent such as the Cyberpunk and Terminator series. The recent Predator film was pretty basic though. Death Stranding would really suit a big budget mini series in my opinion.
@16BitHero
As much as Kojima's games copy films I never got the feeling any of the settings or stories he makes would work well outside of video games. The plots are so convoluted and full of weird imagery (not to mention the constant tonal whiplashes) that I just don't think it would ever sit well in live action. Animated...maybe? But even then it would be a nightmare to translate some things into a movie runtime.
I always thought that Death Stranding would've made a much better film franchise or streaming series than a game franchise. The world building is fairly intriguing, but the game itself just feels like a slog.
what it always should’ve been
All that money syphoned off of game budgets is paying off!
@PegasusActual93 good points - I guess my hope is that he wouldn't have much creative control in a TV series so it would have a more conventional plot and appeal to sci fi fans in general rather than those of us who struggle through his avant garde shenanigans to appreciate something completely unique.
@NintenGuy there’s still the movie in the works too 👀
