Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4

One of the most unexplainable things of the PS5 generation so far is how Red Dead Redemption 2 has never been given a current-gen patch. It's perfectly playable on PS5 in backwards compatibility, but you're locked to 30 frames-per-second and an inferior resolution compared to what's available on Xbox Series X|S.

Rumours in the past few years have suggested Rockstar has actually had some form of a Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 version in the works, but those plans were shelved due to the development of GTA 6. Back in 2022, it was suggested by Rockstar insider Tez2 that the developer had cancelled its plans to bring back the first game and its sequel for modern hardware.

Of course, Red Dead Redemption did receive a new version in 2023, but this was only for PS4, and it was far more of a simple port than a proper remaster or even a PS5 patch. Only the resolution was improved, and the frame rate remained at 30 until a post-launch update increased it to 60fps on PS5.

Now, a new rumour claims Rockstar is currently developing a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as a patch for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S to enhance the open worlder for current hardware. This is according to "sources close to Rockstar" speaking to outlets Game Reactor and Nintenduo.

They suggest the Switch 2 version is aiming for a release this year, though release day plans surrounding the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S updates aren't clear. The suggestion comes just days after it was also rumoured that Rockstar plans to port GTA 4 to new systems as well. If all of these claims and rumours are actually true, then it means the developer would have restarted development of the PS5 version despite it having just delayed GTA 6 to May 2026.

One possibility is Video Games Deluxe working on the project, which was recently acquired by Rockstar and rebranded as Rockstar Australia. It was brought in to help fix the PS5, PS4 GTA Trilogy, which launched in a mess.
