Yuri manga Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games – which has been running since 2020 and has accumulated eight volumes to date – is getting an anime adaptation from Diomedéa later this year, and Capcom has signed on to make Street Fighter 6 the star of the series.
A live action web drama was previously released for this comic, where Street Fighter 5 replaced the fictional fighting game in the manga, but it makes sense to refresh the story with the franchise’s most recent game.
The plot effectively revolves around a group of students at an all-girls school, where they share a passion for fighting games despite consoles being banned. Eventually, they enter Japan’s biggest fighting game tournament, and it’s effectively about them overcoming impossible odds – with some pretty specific fighting game terminology used.

The art in the anime’s looking good, although weirdly the use of direct-feed Street Fighter 6 footage doesn’t really gel with the rest of the scenes.
There’s no word of this getting an English release just yet by the way, but we’d be surprised if it doesn’t get picked up; Seven Seas publishes the manga in the west, so we suspect it’ll eventually find a home on Netflix or Crunchy Roll.

I wasn't ready for that thumbnail.
I've read the manga for 4-5 chapters and it's actually pretty nice especially if you understand about fighting games lingo.
But kudos to Capcom. They really knew how to properly market SF 6 that can interest people who never play fighting games. No wonder SF 6 really explode in Japan and some pro players even claim it's close to SF 2 popularity.
Saw this trailer last night. My mind went to Hi-Score Girl, but a little bit more grown up.
Looks interesting.
Almost feels like this would’ve made more sense to use V-tubers if your going to use direct footage of street fighter 6 🤔
@Shepherd_Tallon loved Hi Score Girl!!! I even bought the manga.
@Angelus3K Saaaame!
Absolutely loved the anime, then collected all of the manga.
I had serious nostalgia watching it.
I first heard about this series last year on Anime News Network. I also got Hi Score Girl vibes off it (thumbs up for the two HSG fans above!👍).
I must agree that the use of SF6 footage doesn't blend well with the animation here, the whole thing makes it kinda look off in a way. I will still watch it though.
When you thought SF6 couldn’t possibly become any more popular in Japan…
I've seen direct video game footage in other anime. It looked fine there because they always show it with the characters in screen, playing on a TV or an arcade cabinet. I wonder if the anime will have full screen SF or if it's just the trailer.
@Coolmusic While the downside it doesn't blend that well with the animation but for the animators their job became easier because they don't need to create fake fighting game scene for each eps.
And by using real fighting games, it's also easier to connect between the game footage with what the characters says or do when they're playing the game.
