PS Store Sales Charts: The Top Three Best-Selling Games on PS5 Are from Microsoft

Guess that’s what happens when you create monopolies

Ive done my bit to help Forza get to the top of the European chart.

I tried to convince myself that I was going to wait for a sale because I'd already played it (and loved it) when I had a Series X but I ended up caving in and bought it on Friday night

Well they are technically three publishers so I'm not surprised plus we should get used to this since all their games will be coming to Playstation going forward.

@PlatinumMikey You say that like Sony don't have an effective console monopoly themselves. Obviously there's the switch, but that's a different segment of the market.

Well, thats just kinda what happens when a publisher buys popular franchises. It’s not like these games weren’t coming to Playstation anyway. Good job Microsoft i guess 😁

Except for Forza Horizon, which was never on Playstation before and deservedly found a new audience on there

I'm fine with helping get Oblivion up there, 200hrs of nonstop fun so far. It's been a lot more enjoyable than even I expected and my hopes were very high. Many friends seem to be on Forza too, happy to just see folks enjoying good games.

@ButterySmooth30FPS also how you turn the annihilation of a brand into some kind of victory. Buying out developers and letting their ( what would have mostly been multi platform games anyway ) save you. People seem to think gamepass was created out of the goodness of Microsoft’s heart when really it was created due to desperation. Now they realise it’s unaffordable and have to resort to releasing their prized games on every other platform. It’s pretty embarrassing for team green

@Lysterao how did Sony achieve that? And how did MS achieve that? Are there perhaps differences between providing something people want and cultivating a user base for 30 years... and buying 2 of the biggest publishers in the world that own multiple franchises with huge followings? 🤔 If Xbox didn't exist at all, a bunch of third party publishers would still be selling these games on PS and PS wouldn't own a monopoly on publishing in any way. But as of now, one company owns all these games being published and it is starting to clearly dominate the charts.

They have bought their way to a monopoly in the span of a few years, and you can see why the deals were scrutinised. It wasn't as obvious when it was mostly kept to Game Pass, but these figures will be generating much interest from FTC types now that they are selling games everywhere.

And filtering all gaming money to one company that has proven it sucks at managing a gaming division seems a little risky for the future of games 🤦‍♂️ if they f*** it up from here on out, MS won't care about games, only margins.

PlayStation players can subsidize gamepass players. Works fine with me,already got my money’s worth of gamepass with ninja gaiden 2 black and these bangers this month

It’s not too long ago that people said „Xbox has no games“.

Now they wait months for getting a PS5 exclusive (Yotei) while the sales are dominated by Xbox games. What a dramatic change!

@Lysterao tbf PS tend to buy a studio after a decade of releasing third party exclusives on the platform. Not buying out studios that have essentially released multi platform games their entire existence. Who’s next for MS, EA? UBI?

@Max_the_German nobody is even talking about PlayStation exclusives anymore. All I see being discussed is multiplats and indie games nowadays.

@Max_the_German Well, to be fair, at that time Xbox didn’t have the same output as now. I’m sure you’ve heard about the largest acquisition in gaming where they bought two of the largest 3rd party publishers in the world. Everyone acts so surprised that Xbox has a large output now, it’s not magic, its the effect of acquiring around 15 studios within a short period of time

Just think if Microsoft didn’t spend $80 billion all of these games would be in the exact same place on PlayStation charts except forza 5 which would still be a Xbox exclusive.

@Max_the_German yeah, so the argument doesn't hold any water because a) that was before the acquisitions of several studios as well as the biggest publisher of many top selling franchises b) they also released older games. If Sony were to release all the first party games they have since ps2 on xbox, they'd flood the market.

I've said it before and was crucified, but I guess Xbox will be the nº 1 publisher in PS5 this year.

@PlatinumMikey True, though they had the luxury of doing so due to the domination of the PS2 era. They didn't need to buy studios then, the way they bought psygnosis back during the PS1 gen for example. , they were all but unchallenged until the Xbox 360. 2018 MS didnt have the same option of playing things slowly, deserved or otherwise. Besides, a fair few of Xbox's acquisitions were based off of longer histories, like Bethesda, Playground games, Double Fine or Ninja Theory, just not all as exclusive based as Sony ones.

So Sony now makes the most powerful console of the generation, and sells it at a fractionally cheaper price, which also plays Xbox’s best games.

Well, they bought the developers so, yeah. I didn't know about forza developers though, if they're microsoft studio from the beginning or just being bought when their games are popular like minecraft and bethesda.

@Cornpop76 and you think subscriptions services are good for the industry? Why do you think Xbox are releasing games on ps now? Out of the goodness of their hearts. PS has it right wirh ps plus. Old titles that don’t sell loads of copies anymore and gives rhem a bit more life is fine not brand new games. You’d have to be an absolute fool to think that is sustainable

@Cornpop76 no you say you played shadows via a sub? I’m assuming a sub like gamepass? I paid then £70 notes of cold hard cash as the devs deserve it for the work. It’s a fantastic game and I will be getting my moneys worth. Day one releases on sub services is completely unsustainable sny fool should know that but they keep lording it like it’s brillaint . It’s tragic and won’t end well

@Cornpop76 your missing the obvious point though. If gamepass was making a load of money would ms be releasing games on ps . And from the numbers I’ve seen for every £1 gamepass makes it costs are £.50p that’s not healthy numbers mate. So as far as I can see Sony would be stupid to put day 1 games on ps and do they even need too anyway when the vast majority of sales devs get seem to be on the platform. You’re just barking up the wrong tree like ms. And you’re clearly missing out on some amazing games if that’s all you’ve brought .

Who's dominated the console market? Who paid for exclusivity for street fighter 5 effectively killing the fgc on Xbox when the best competition was on 360? Such a monopoly Microsoft have with their third party sideshow man.

@JustinTimberlake I’m sure the generation has turned out completely different to the way MS saw it in their heads 3-4 years ago. None of these games we’re seeing them publish would have been on PS if people had actually brought an Xbox. I’m very aware of how business works thanks. And yes PlayStation has dominated the market for the right reasons. Shrewd buyouts at shrewd times of developers who had already been making third party exclusives for the platform for years. Simple business really. Not buying out a ton of devs in 2-3 years lol. That’s a monopoly
