PS Stars Push Square

Sony has shared its PlayStation Stars rewards program, which never made it off phones and actually onto PS5 and PS4 consoles, will be shutting down. The full closure will take place in November 2026, but the program won't be accepting any new members, effective immediately.

The news has been confirmed in a PlayStation Blog post, where it's revealed the firm wants to "refocus" its efforts after learning "a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to". These are the key details, as per the blog post:

  • Starting today, PlayStation Stars will no longer accept new members for this version of the program.
  • If members choose to cancel their PlayStation Stars membership starting today, it will not be possible to rejoin this version of the program, and members will lose all earned Points.
  • Current PlayStation Stars members can still earn Digital Collectibles, Points and level up their status until July 23, 2025 at 7:59AM PDT | 3:59PM BST | 11:59PM JST. After this date, there will be no new PlayStation Stars Campaigns available, or any additional rewards or status benefits to earn.
  • This version of the PlayStation Stars program will fully end on November 2, 2026 and current PlayStation Stars members can continue to redeem Points as long as their Points don’t expire before then.

After signing up to the service, PS5 and PS4 users were able to earn digital collectibles by completing challenges, which could be displayed on their Profile page. In addition, reward points were earned from buying digital games on the PS Store, which could be exchanged for full games or PS Store credit. There won't be any more rewards uploaded to PS Stars after 23rd July of this year.

PS Stars always flew under the radar, but the PS Store credit rewards it offered were a nice benefit to redeem every so often. The options mysteriously disappeared from the service last year, but then reappeared a month later. PS Stars was mainly tied to the PS App on smartphones and was never properly integrated into the console UI.

"We want to thank all of our players for supporting PlayStation Stars since the launch in 2022," Sony said. "As we explore new ways to evolve our loyalty program efforts for the future, we’ll continue to celebrate all of our players through the various community activities we have planned."

Sony isn't actually the only company to shut its rewards system down, as Nintendo has also recently closed its Gold Points system ahead of Switch 2 releasing.
