It’s business as usual for PS5 in Circana’s USA sales report for December 2024, as Sony’s system was the month’s top-selling console yet again, despite dipping 18% year-over-year. It’s important to remember that the device had a particularly strong 2024, so these are still very respectable numbers.
Both the ageing Nintendo Switch, now in its twilight years, and Xbox Series X|S, slipped to 38% declines.
In terms of pure dollar sales generated, the PS5 is now ranked third on the all-time USA sales list. However, its high price needs to be considered here, as it currently ranks 11th in terms of units. Of course, it’s still got a lot of life left in it so will surely continue to improve upon its position.
On the software front, Sony had an impressive year. Helldivers 2 was the third best-selling game of the year, behind only Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and EA Sports College Football 25. MLB The Show 24 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 both also charted.
We’ll include all of the sales charts below, but one other thing worth noting is that the PS Portal was the best-selling accessory of the year, rendering it a tremendous success for Sony.
Obviously its relatively high price point gives it an advantage seeing as these charts are organised by dollars, but other expensive accessories like the DualSense Edge exist, and it’s outpacing that.

Helldivers 2 being 3rd is impressive when you realize it was only priced at 40 bucks.
@Americansamurai1 It's genuinely incredible how successful Helldivers 2 has been.
@get2sammyb really great to see. I'm over 200+ hours and have the platinum. Game was my second favorite in 2024 only behind Astro bot. Curious to see if they port it to switch 2.
You know Xbox is dead when it declines faster than the 8 year old full price system. Jesus.
A YoY decline of 18% sounds unhealthy for a console in the very middle of its lifecycle.
@Max_the_German December 2023, which the 18% decline is being compared to, was a single month sales record for a PlayStation console.
Dragons Dogma 2 outselling Rebirth really surprised me.
Ps portal is doing well I remember everyone saying no one going to buy that 🤣
Removed - trolling/baiting
@Fluberuper it is on more platforms then ff7 rebirth
@Max_the_German they were up massively in 2023
@Slayer25c Oh, right. I’d completely forgotten about Rebirth’s limited platforms, haha.
That Xbox decline is bad, may aswell pack it in now with declines like that after 4 years with another 3-4 years to go. I wouldn't be surprised if the Portal alone is out selling the Xbox consoles, I know it was at one point.
@Americansamurai1 the above graph makes no mention ranking by dollar amount, just general sales of games. That would make Helldivers' performance not that unexpected; it was available on PC and PlayStation early in the year, and was priced at half the price of other games.
What a great year for Sony. I don't know what could possibly come out this year that would knock the PS5 out of first place in terms of hardware and software sales...
@DarkTron it's ranked by dollar amount looks at the original post of the list it notes it at the top of the ranking.
@Fluberuper Playing DD now and I am just hooked on this game. It is fantastic. I cannot put it down.
I knew Helldivers 2 did great, but 3rd place on the year?! If someone at this time last year predicted that Helldivers would outsell the annual sports juggernauts (Madden, EA FC and NBA 2K) they would've sounded ridiculous. What an accomplishment by Arrowhead!
@get2sammyb I know, and still. There is a new PS5 model, there is a new GTA incoming. Other consoles peak in their fourth year. 18%!
@Max_the_German you expected the new GTA coming out God knows when to impact the sales in December 2024?
@naruball Yes, at least a bit. But maybe the decline would be even greater without the trailer and the hype around it.
Helldivers 2 there is impressive, the rest are kind of expected of IPs. Dragon Ball that high kind of seems that way but even then I"m not surprised with how big an IP it is.
Then again to me just going 'oh barely much presence for some IPs I care about to be in cinemas for anime movies versus the bigger IP cinema locations was just baffling disappointing from a few years ago' when you'd see a DB or My Hero or others. 1 cinema per state or 1 in entirety of my country was hilarious I forget which it was the IP I checked with that even checked archives of the website and still nothing. It was easily better off digital viewing or blu-ray later which I did. Said a lot about anime licensing costs and some of my licensors pulling out and only covering international live action films instead as anime IPs are expensive.
Back on topic.
The rest are pretty obvious and not surprising in the slightest. Though Hogwarts/Dragons Dogma 2 I was wondering and while Hogwarts makes sense up there with numbers already heard about DD2 I wasn't sure how it would do but seemed to do pretty well.
Nice to see Astro Bot at top 10 and also nice to see Helldivers 2, Spidey 2, and GoW Ragnarok are still selling well. Sony you don't need to put all your money for live service games when your single player games are doing well.
But with FF VII Rebirth still selling, i wonder if it eventually gonna reach SE crazy high target sales.
@PuppetMaster i agree, they don’t have to put all their money into live service, but some is okay, wouldn’t you say ? 😃
@nomither6 Yes just some amount is enough.
Astro making the charts is pretty impressive.
@Max_the_German so what is your point... that it's unhealthy that Sony is still in a much stronger position than it's competition? The real issue is that console gaming has peaked, and it's generally receding (transitioning to other platforms, esp PC). It's the main reason why platform holders have moved to increase revenue per unit sold, because they want to keep decent growth. That's also why they're moving to Live Service... because it's more lucrative (when it works).... just see Helldiver 2 numbers.
I think the truth of the matter is, what with Covid, it's very difficult to compare with other generations - other to compare between competitors within the same generation... and XBox is the only fair comparison.
GTA6 isn't going to be raising sales now, as the marketing hasn't kicked off properly, and they don't even have a release date. Once people realise that you can't play it on PC day one, then it will have an impact (most likely).
Now I'm kind of interested in ps portal, I've been playing softmod wii u and it's nice to be able to play on tv or on tablet without inserting some console in to the dock like switch, it will be real nice if I can do that with ps5 too. And the new ps portal black colour seems nice.
