Destiny 2 PS5 PS4

For a long, long time now, the hardcore Destiny 2 fanbase appeared to accept Bungie would always stick to its seasonal and expansion-based model, and never develop a standalone third entry in the series. Referencing the issues the studio has with its engine and how after layoffs hit, the most committed players struggled to see how Bungie could continue to support Destiny 2 while developing a full sequel in secret.

That line of thinking was generally accepted amongst the fanbase, but yesterday's livestream detailing The Final Shape has blown open the doors to rampant speculation all over again.

At the start of the showcase, executive creative director Luke Smith opened proceedings by teasing the Destiny series will continue after the events of the DLC launching in June. We know Destiny 2 itself will live on in the form of Episodes after The Final Shape, but what Smith says appears to hint at something bigger. He teased: "Facing The Witness is not the end of Destiny 2, and it's definitely not the end of Destiny. After you face The Witness, we're going to tell you what's coming next to Destiny 2 and beyond. We'll see you soon."

Bungie generally hosts a Destiny 2 Showcase during August, so it's expected the developer will reveal what it has ready for the future then later this year. Interestingly, what was later revealed in yesterday's livestream for The Final Shape accurately lined up with a Reddit post made earlier this year claiming knowledge of a third Destiny title. It was said the DLC will contain a "prism" system that will "allow players to mix and match abilities from different subclasses". This was confirmed as the new Prismatic subclasses shown off yesterday.

The post in question then went on to state Destiny 3 is in the works, and it'll allow you to equip any ability since classes will no longer exist. With the new Prismatic subclasses allowing you to mix and match different subclasses, The Final Shape is speculated to be the first step to making that a reality, with the third game codenamed "Payback".

With presumably a clean slate and a fresh start for your character, would you be interested in a Destiny 3? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
