Expect some pretty impressive musical performances to emerge from two of PS5’s biggest games in 2024, as both The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will allow players to unleash their creativity. The anticipated titles – scheduled to release as PS5 exclusives – both feature musical minigames, and they sound surprisingly deep.

Game Informer’s exclusive cover story opened the lid on Rebirth’s in-depth piano playing mechanic earlier this week. “Through exploration, Cloud can find sheet music for compositions within the Final Fantasy 7 world,” the magazine explains. “He can then sit at a piano and play the music. This rhythm-based minigame has you use the analogue sticks to play the required notes, plus some of the buttons to change octaves and keys.”

The key detail here is that there’s also a freeplay mode where you’re able to create your own compositions. “[Director Naoki Hamaguchi] then pulls up a video showing a developer playing a popular Japanese song on the piano, complete with a video of her hands. Watching her hands fly around the DualSense controller is a sight to behold”

What’s interesting is that Naughty Dog has happened upon a similar feature. You may recall the guitar minigame from The Last of Us: Part 2, which was quite basic in the PS4 original. The Sony developer has significantly expanded this feature for the remaster, as introduced on Twitter:

As noted above, you can add effects pedals, adjust the lighting, and even incorporate different instruments. All of this is likely to result in some really compelling virtual performances, as fans get to grips with the features. But the thing we’re really looking forward to here are the inevitable compositions which incorporate the minigames from both The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth at the same time.
