Naughty Dog Has 'More Than One' Ambitious PS5 Single Player Game on the Way

Well, that's it, no more reason to live
Literally the only multiplayer to look forward to is gone. So literally no good interesting multiplayer out there.
Yes, single player is more important. But usually (if good) over after 10 to 20 hours.
So wished there was a new multiplayer game to waste all the other hours in...

Trying to be optimistic here but there’s a good chance we don’t see either of these until around the PS6.

Good. They need to pick up the time lost.
They were a studio that released 4 games in one generation reduced to two last generation (plus a big expansion to uncharted) and zero so far this generation.
Them releasing 2 would be the minimum given how far behind they are already.

If none of the ones out there interest you, i don't think they interest you at all.

Yeah, this is supremely disappointing. Surely more so for those involved in its development. The reality is, regardless of talent or intentions, sometimes a project just doesn’t come together. No one is immune, not even a studio of this pedigree. Take the lessons and move on.

I'd like a new uncharted game that's ps5 only. No cross gen parity but we all know it'll be another last of us entry.

@Nem While there are multiplayer games releasing by the dozen. They’re all half baked f2p or early access game created by small indie studios. A naughty dog multiplayer game would have definitely been something to look forward to. A multiplayer game created by a high credited AAA studios, that employs some of the industry finest talent. All they had to do was release something with that naughty dog polish to it.

I think 10+ live service games is too much. Sony should focus on 2, maybe 3 online game, each different. One shooter, one fantasy, and maybe revive Playstation Home

I'm glad the mp got cancelled. Perhaps they can make a small mode to go with tlou3 instead like on the og tlou. That was a lot of fun. I hope the other game, if it's not a brand new IP is Uncharted Lost Legacy 2.

Why “waste” so many hours doing the same old thing in a sandbox when you could instead play a dozen carefully crafted single player experiences? There are so many games out there, old and new, that you should never feel like you need a multiplayer game to waste time in.

I would love to have seen Naughty Dog go back to Uncharted once more, but since that will never happen (via them at least), I am excited to see what they are working on next. Although I would have liked to have seen for myself what factions 2 was like, I’m glad that ND are focusing on single player games moving forward, because that really is what they are best at for sure, and I am not too big of a GaaS fan at all. I would imagine that there has been work continuing for a while behind closed doors on a new franchise from them, so when we inevitably see what it is, it will likely be a lot further ahead than we would all expect. That leaves the probability of Last of Us part 3 as the other game that is being developed, it’s too much of a cash cow to not be, and perhaps Factions 2s work will carry on into that as some kind of multiplayer akin to the first game. But, with the the amount of time lost this gen, I would not be surprised if LoU3 was on PS6 at this rate.

In all seriousness this is only a good thing. The Last of Us is a well made game but also had terribly boring gameplay in my opinion so I don’t know why anyone wanted Factions in the first place.

@MrMagic it is still 12 (well, 11 now) but they just staggered them. Before it was 12 by 2025. Now it’s 6 by 2025 and 6 afterwards.

So...when's the earliest we see a trailer then? 2... 3 years? F U Bungie.

Their original plan was 12 by then but now it's 6 and they've released 1 which was a vr game and hopefully this was one so there's only 4 to go by then.
Helldivers & concord are another 2 for 2024 as well.

Yeah it's weird not to see them release something new but we know when they drop a new game it's going to be incredible. Factions didn't work out, glad they chose sticking to what they're best at than live service. These days if you drop a multiplayer game, you need to support it for a long time, it's not worth it. Maybe instead of cancelling though it could've been given to another studio 🥲

I've bought every ps console at the end of its generation cycle so I can cherry pick what I want to play. I won't be buying a ps5 for quite some time, as currently there hasn't been much released on it that's really interested me so far. No doubt that'll change as the generation progresses.

If Naughty Dog have two single player games in development, they'll release them toward the end of the ps5s gen cycle. If one of them is TLOU3 then I'll be super happy. I also hope the 2nd is new idea with new characters and gameplay.

@Nem Referring to your comment about them doing 4 games in the PS3 gen, then 2 and now 0 so far, that's unfortunately the trend we're seeing across AAA development these days, with only a couple of exceptions (such as Insomniac).

It feels like AAA development in general has become unsustainable and even big studios are only a single failed project away from folding. Sony's first party studios have become pretty much exclusively known for their big, polished AAA releases, so they're sort of stuck continuing that.

I wish some of those studios could take a step back and release something smaller, more like a double A game with that extra Sony polish on top. Surely there's room for games like that, and it would massively improve their release cadence.

I hope they have something other than TLOU and Uncharted planned, I'm hoping for a Jak and Daxter revival or a brand new IP.

I admit it doesn’t look great that they’ve cancelled Factions but Santa Monica supposedly cancelled a version of God of War until they created the 2018 title

This is a very good point to bring up. It wasn’t a GoW game but actually a new SCI-Fi IP that they worked on for 18 months. Stig Asmussen was the director and he and a bunch of other people lost their jobs because of it and Santa Monica went 5 years without releasing a game, 4.5 years into the PS4 generation before GoW(2018) released.

@get2sammyb I'd have to respectfully disagree. Uncharted and TLOU as original Sony properties, have left a far bigger cultural footprint than Rachet. Spiderman is already part of the world's biggest IP. For that reason I think the Dog is still on top.

New uncharted Nate's daughter gets kidnapped so he has to help the bad guys to find the treasure then soon as his brother and Sullivan gets the kid then the gloves are off and you shoot them bad guys dead yea that game writes itself. But today we will have a sing and dance and let's build a relationship 🤦 where did it all go wrong.

I would say insomniac is PlayStation top studio right now followed by Guerilla and Santa Monica

@2here2there @Shepherd_Tallon I don't really mean to be negative, but Insomniac has been carrying the PS5 so far while Naughty Dog has released nothing but remasters and a "remake". Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man Remastered. Wolverine may be out before Naughty Dog releases anything new.

As I commented for the article about the multiplayer game being cancelled, I'm still not sure how the hell a studio that should be big like Naughty Dog would be restricted to developing and maintaining a multiplayer game to the extent that they couldn't make a single player game too. It makes no sense given how Insomniac can obviously make several games at a time.

Jax and Daxter remake I hope, way better to remake that game rather than remake a 3 years old games lol.

@YeoSprings Playstation focusing on live service games although most of their studio is single player devs is one of the worst decisions that playstation has done. And they spend to much on bungie, just pay bungie to make exclusive single player games rather than outright buying them.

The Last of Us Remake Remastered and The Last of Us Part II Remastered Remake?

Why do people talk about TLoU Online as if ND was only making this one game? ND explicitly states that they are making more than one single player game. We know for at least a few months that there are multiple teams working on different games, so what's the problem, exactly? Most likely one being TLoU3 and the other one being a new IP.

They are working on both since what, 2020, when TLoU2 shipped? So both could already have 3 years of development, maybe one with a release for 2025 and the other for 2026, so I don't think the panic people are feeling makes sense.

Significant lack of faith being shown in Naughty Dog which baffles me.

Their last 5 games have all been 10/10 and 2 of those are considered some of the best games of all time.

The disrespect is unbelievable.

I personally cannot wait to see what projects they’ve been working on. Hopefully TLOU 3 to finish the story and a new IP.

@Jacko11 ND made 4 Uncharted games, and they seem to be done with the IP. I think they will do the same for TLoU, end it with a Part III and move on.

@get2sammyb I think it depends on how you're defining "number 1." I think Insomniac is no doubt PlayStation's most lucrative and prolific studio this generation, but Naughty Dog remains PlayStation's most prestigious. If Insomniac wasn't working with an insanely successful third-party IP, would they be so important? No one can really say. But ND's own IP has generated a massive amount of buzz through cross-media without even needing to release a new game.

@ChrisDeku true, but factions was in development for at least 5 years at this point. that is a hefty amount of resources, time and money being thrown into a pit for absolutely no return. the scale of this cancellation is far grander by comparison and quite an embarassment to be honest.

the current state of a studio is usually a reflection of the management in place. i'm not just talking about upper managament such as jim ryan (who is obviously responsible on some level), but also the studio heads at naughty dog. it might be time that druckmann steps down as co-president. since he bacame vice president of the studio in 2018, the studio has been on a decline and mismanaged to a great extent as we are seeing more evidence of. realistically, naughty dog may only release a single game for the entirety of the ps5 generation which is telling. they should have pulled the chord on factions years ago if they were in over their head or at least scaled it down. how nobody saw this coming internally is anyone's guess.

Whatever the new project is, I hope it’s very different from TLOU and Uncharted. Something cartoony with ND’s current level of polish would be amazing.
And I think we can all agree Jak & Daxter need to return.

We're 3 years into this console's life cycle and all they've put out are remasters and a remake. Truly poor use of their time, the management there is off track. Knowing how long their development times are so NPCs can have realistic standing animations, we probably won't see anything from them until the end of the console's cycle. Really poor showing ND

Hope it’s Last of Us Part 3 and a the rumored Sci Fi game. I love ND so whatever they show i am sure it will be amazing and i will day one buy.

Also, let's look at how their last few games were in development for:
Uncharted 3: 2 years
The Last of Us: 4 years
Uncharted 4: 3 years
The Last of Us Part II: 4 years

So yeah, I think it is totally possible for their new games to release in 2025 and 2026.

This is obviously a PR statement meant to ease concerns regarding the multiplayer abandonment news. They certainly managed to ship recycled content and PC ports and have another recycled content release imminent. Maybe stop double and triple dipping and come up with a new idea.

I think we are going to continue to see stories in the near future that seem to indicate mismanagement at the upper tiers of Sony (gaming arm). There seems a real focus to rake in cash peddling hardware off the lingering hype of the initial ps5 release; riding that until it dies down and yet not offer much in terms of actual application.

There is only so much excuse making a given fanboy or girl can regurgitate, before the continued indicators suggesting complacency, and greed driven decision making continues to point to a state of things that have really hurt the first party trajectory this gen. I think 2024 is really going to be continuation of little to zero communication and a ghost town of First party content. Yes of course there is some third-party stuff to look to and eventually whatever Sony Studios has cooking will release, but it doesn't negate the fact that this generation is looking to be in the middle of a very underwhelming period of time.

No amount of fluffy excusing making, glass half full dreaming, and attacking those with concerns will change that.

actually, the last of us 2 also underperformed sales wise. it only sold 10m copies or so. keep in mind the last of us 2 is one of if not sony's most expensive game ever made with a production budget of over $200m. compare those sales to god of war (2018) which sold over 20m copies with half the production budget mostlikely. even last of us 1, including remastered, sold over 20m copies. usually sequels outperform the first entry by quite a margin but not so much in this example. in case you weren't paying attention, the last of us 2 was a very divisive game in more ways than one, further tainting naughty dog's track record.

yes, naughty dog is in decline due to mismanagement issues, talent leaving the studio at a steady clip over the past 5 years or so and a heavy reliance on remasters. i don't know how anyone could defend them right now unless they were to surprise us with two or three games by the end of the ps5 cycle which is very unlikely. realistically, we are getting the last of us part 3 from them at that's it before the ps6 launches. so one proper game in the span of 8 years is a very real possibility.

@Porco Makes sense that my favourite game of all time would be a divisive one. At least it made you feel things. I’d argue it’s the strongest people have ever felt about a game. Especially the ones who hate it so passionately. The reasons people give why this is bad, are often quite hilarious. Especially because they usually demonstrate an advanced knowledge about how to craft a predictable and meaningless story.

Still waiting for a new Jak and daxter. Haven’t had anything since the cancelled Jak 4 that was going to be a reboot of the series.
Only one out of Sly, Jak and Ratchet who has had games released on every PS generation is Ratchet and Clank for new entries.
Sly is still stuck in Egypt.

@PinderSchloss gameplay wise, the last of us 2 was excellent. it's unfortunate that the story and characters couldn't live up to the first game. i do believe that is the result of druckmann having too much power and control at the company — to the point where there is nobody there to say "no" to him. while working with straley on last of us 1, there was more collaboration and accountability of ideas which made for a far better game, at least with regards to the story and character arcs. druckmann's leash needs to be reigned in for the final entry but it doesn't look like that is happening anytime soon as he keeps getting promoted to higher levels of the company (his ego has grown as well). don't be surprised if he is head of sony studios one day

@Porco You don’t have to try and explain why it’s supposedly bad. I know all the arguments. None of them make sense to me.
The biggest mistake was in the marketing. They should have made it clear that people were going to play as Abby and not as Joel. Too many people had wrong expectations.

@Shepherd_Tallon Having two new single player games in the works is good news indeed, but my problem remains with what they are saying. I think it's a load of BS that they would have had to somehow ditch making any single player games at all just because of the new Factions. There's no way a studio that should be large like them could only handle one game at a time, no matter what kind of game it is.

@AlexPorto Because they basically said exactly that. They would have had to scrap making single player games if Factions didn't get cancelled, which like I just said above has to be a load of BS. There's no way a studio like Naughty Dog couldn't maintain and make new content for that while also making a single player game.

Multiplayer games are all the same. There are several from big studios as well, but the model is to simply rope you into micro-transactions or a subscription. The games are designed to create an artificial problem the micro transactions are meant to fix. It's cynical that way.
This was for the best.

Naughty Dog is a name that always piques interest. Three years with no word doesn’t worry me. You know you’re going to get quality when they deliver. Is it worrying multiplayer has been cancelled? No! Frankly more studios should take a lesson from them. It’s ok to cancel something you’re not happy with. The trend of releasing broken or unfinished games because “deadlines” needs to end.

Maybe time to leave zombies behind and do something new

Some of my favourite games series are ND especially Uncharted and Last of us.

I’m glad they are now focused back on amazing single player campaign games.

It’s just a dam shame we won’t see them for a while as probably some of three years into the PS5 life have been totally wasted on this multiplayer game now canned.

My PS5 life as been extremely low since about the first year of the PS5. I don’t like final fantasy even though I tried hard and not keen on spider man, probably hence my 2023 report saying about 40 hours total playtime only.
For me the PS4 absolutely was sensational and leagues ahead for me game wise.

@get2sammyb I disagree. They haven't released a mediocre game yet. When they actually release a game, we'll see if things have changed. For now, in terms of quality, they remain Sony's best developer (even though personally I prefer Santa Monica and Insomniac).

@Jimmer-jammer exactly. Even Santa Monica's sci-fi game got cancelled. They weren't happy about it, but that's how we got the God of War reboot.

I play mostly on PC as it's my primary platform with PlayStation a close second. I'll tell you what, though. There are four developers that I automatically buy their games and those are Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Sucker Punch, and Sony Santa Monica. What a coincidence all are owned by PlayStation and produce unrivaled games. I greatly look forward to more from those studios (and others).

Good thing their last big Single Player game jaded and divided it's fanbase to bits and now there's little trust in them as a developer.

To be honest after all the TLOUII drama, I'm much less hyped for anything ND has planned.

They have wasted three years making nothing. Basically one of the best studios Sony has have nothing on the line for playstation 5 in the next, probably 2-3 years. Such a disgrace.

This is probably the best move. Sony should end this stupid push into live service and let their studios get back to what they are good at. Now maybe we can get a few new games from Naughty Dog that aren't remakes/remasters.

I like Neil Druckmann but I do feel, he is way to caught up in all this last of us universe that he's lost sight of what made Naughty Dog... Naughty Dog.

Honestly can't believe they've wasted so much time and now nothing to show in either space. It may well be PS6 by the time we play a new naughty dog game. I'm just hoping its not part 3

LOL, you just regurgitated the same talking points of every Stan for this game. It wasn't a minority, it was a large chunk of TLOU fanbase. The "10 MILLION COPIES!" you're referring to doesn't mean successful, it took nearly double the amount of time to reach that milestone as other Sony First party IP's and even then it was sold at massive discount. I've seen it as low as $10.

Put this into perspective. Days Gone sold 8 Million Copies in ONE YEAR and Sony considered it a failure. TLOUII took TWO YEARS to reach 10 Million while being massively discounted. It's not the win you think it is.

I hope it's something more fun, in the style of Uncharted. So tired of dark post-apocalypse games.

But to be honest, I wish they would make something totally different now, instead of yet another cinematic third person game.

Dissenting opinion here. Not every Naughty Dog game needs to be a 20-hour AAA masterpiece. They’ve been weighed down for, what, 10 years on The Last of Us-related content and damn near 20 years on Uncharted?! It’s gotta be tiresome working on the same properties over and over again. Get those creative juices flowing and do something different with a shorter development period. Their games are all awesome regardless of what they’re doing, so more is better!

Don’t get me wrong, though. If Naughty Dog were to come out with more AAA fare related to TLoU, Uncharted, Jak and Daxter, or Crash Bandicoot, I’m all in.

Ultimately, I’m just sayin’ that, based on their track record of awesome game experiences, if Naughty Dog were to work on something totally off-the-wall, like some weird chiropractor simulator called Prognathous Ossein Pain Points (POPP! for short) or, heck, an officially licensed Goodyear Tire Tread Designer game, I’d buy those, too. Naughty Dog is my favorite developer, and I’m convinced they could make a game about glue mixing both fun and engaging.

If it's another cinematic game, 20 hour and more experience then I don't care they aren't my thing, moving on.
