Mortal Kombat Injustice PS5 PlayStation 5 1

For the past generation or so, fighting game developer NetherRealm Studios has interchanged between Mortal Kombat and Injustice. This year, however, it’ll release Mortal Kombat 1 – the second successive entry in the series after 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11. So, why did it make that decision? Series creator Ed Boon explained in an interview with IGN.

“There were a number of factors, some of which I can talk about, some of which I probably shouldn’t,” he joked, before elaborating that the pandemic played a huge part. “We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe. So there were a bunch of variables involved that eventually we realised, ‘Okay, let's do another Mortal Kombat game and hopefully we'll get back to the Injustice games.’”

Boon was pushed for further clarification, and insisted the door is not closed on Injustice. “Not at all,” he emphatically replied. So, it sounds like we may get a new Injustice later this generation after all, but for now all of the developer’s focus is on Mortal Kombat 1. Would you be hyped for a hypothetical Injustice 3?
