Final Fantasy Announcement 2023

Final Fantasy veteran Yoshinori Kitase has said that a "big announcement" is coming in 2023 — and it isn't related to the ongoing Final Fantasy VII saga. Kitase is currently working on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as the game's producer, which makes his teasing especially interesting. "Rest assured we're working hard to make sure 2023 is the most exciting year yet," he says.

It goes without saying that this year is a huge deal for Square Enix — and Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy XVI is locked in for June, and the aforementioned Rebirth could be targeting a 2023 release — although we'd be surprised if it actually makes it before the year is out.

And let's not forget that online juggernaut Final Fantasy XIV is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2023. Add another "big" franchise announcement to the mix, and we're left wondering what it could possibly be.

We don't want to kickstart the hype machine here, but it's worth mentioning that rumours of a Final Fantasy IX remake and a Final Fantasy Tactics remake (or potential remaster) haven't gone away. You may remember that both of these supposed projects appeared as part of the now infamous Nvidia leak from 2021 — the same leak that featured the likes of Tactics Ogre Reborn and many other titles that have since been announced.

What do you think could be next for Final Fantasy? What more do you want from the franchise?
