Final Fantasy VII Rebirth World PS5

Square Enix has opened up on why Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is launching as a PS5 exclusive. Okay, so Sony obviously has an exclusivity deal in place — but we're talking beyond contractual agreements here. According to interview quotes compiled by Gematsu, it's the power of the PS5 that allows Rebirth to flow as an adventure.

"It’s exclusive to PlayStation 5 because of the graphical quality, of course, as well as SSD access speed. Since the adventure unfolds in a vast world after the escape from Midgar, loading stress is an extreme bottleneck," the developers explain.

"We felt we needed the specifications of PlayStation 5 to overcome that and travel the world comfortably."

Going by this quote, it does sound as though Rebirth is going to be big in terms of scope. We don't yet know whether it'll have open world elements — Square Enix says more information on that aspect of the title will be shared later — but it's fair to assume that it's not just going to be a series of corridors, which is sometimes a criticism that's aimed at Final Fantasy VII Remake.

The company says that Rebirth is progressing quickly — and that's partly down to the fact that the team had already eased itself into PS5 development with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. It'll be interesting to see just how "vast" Rebirth ends up being, especially since the project doesn't have to hold anything back for the sake of PS4 hardware.

Are you happy to hear that Rebirth is a current-gen game only? Think about that world map in the comments section below.
