UK Sales Charts: Only Three Top 10 Games Are Available on PlayStation

It's exciting to see the absolute runaway success of the Nintendo Switch. If it stays on the market for a couple of more years and continues its momentum it could become the best selling gaming system of all time and dethrone the mighty PS2.

I'm sure it only has about, last I heard, about 25-30 million more sales to go to top it.

I think it was close to or has beaten the PS4 numbers. Amazing. I love the Switch.

@GADG3Tx87 Switch sold 107mio units as of March 31st 22 therefore still about 48mio units away from beating the PS2

But it will definitely become the third best selling console of all time which currently is the GameBoy (Color) with 118mio units sold

@munstre maybe, but I like to think Horizon just has legs. Game was awesome and they put the time in to fix visual issues. It deserves to pull in good numbers.

And this is in a territory typically dominated by Sony. Nintendo has done such a good job with this console.

Happy to see a strong launch for the new Fire Emblem Warriors which, in many respects, feels like Three Houses if it was an action RPG instead of a tactical RPG.

@munstre Didn't the original Horizon pull in 20+ million sales? Forbidden West will continue to sell well, even once it's not bundled with the PS5. Although it does seem like sales of that game are almost entirely contingent on Sony's ability to continue pushing out new hardware, because the PS4 version has sold almost nothing.

The PS2 is the best selling console of all time. It sold 155 million units. Last I heard the Nintendo Switch was closing in at 120 million but I may have to double check that.

About 10m if the numbers are still accurate from the PS4. Would be crazy if it, or anything, beats the PS2.

I think mario kart 9 will be switch 2 exclusive to get people buy switch 2, mario kart 8 just keep selling on switch. And the game still priced $60.

Is it the social aspect of many of the popular Switch games that draw such big numbers? I rarely see any games I actually play on Switch popping up on the charts. Zelda was the last one I recall doing well. This is in contrast to PC and PlayStation where my favourite games often do very well.

Edit: I recall fire emblem and astral chain doing well also. And shin megami v.

@Ralizah It did sell 20 million, yeah. Gotta wonder if Sony games eventually landing on PS Plus Extra (2 years after launch or whatever) would affect long term sales.
Of course HZD was literally free for everyone on PS4 for a month and that didn't stop it - but I imagine Sony games on PS Plus Extra are going to stay there indefinitely, which is a little different.

@GADG3Tx87 The Switch was last reported at 107 million back in March, straight from Nintendo as a source. That was coming from 103 million previously, so a 4 million increase since the last report from them. They seem to do updates every quarter, so I highly doubt they sold almost 16 million consoles in a three month span. I imagine the Switch is probably somewhere close to 110 million right now. I see it easily passing the Game Boy, but I don't think it will dethrone either the DS or PS2.

Well, if the new Plus continues to evolve than expect to see the physical charts being Switch only!

I was offered a Switch for free once, turned it down. Apart from BotW nothing on it appeals to me in the slightest.

Yeah I just responded to @mariomaster96 that his numbers are correct. Should have fact checked my numbers first. Still, it's an amazing feat. Considering the rocky ground of the WiiU Nintendo really made a comeback from that. I still have my WiiU hooked up just for LoZ Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD. If those got a port on the Switch I could put it in storage.

Just don't know if Nintendo would do a port of a port. People tend to criticize that.

People have been pointing out the problem with just looking at physical sales for months at this point, but it's only when PS struggles, that it's acknowledged.

@munstre I think the main reason it's hanging around in the top 10 is that a large part of its market want to play it on PS5, maybe don't realise they'd get a free upgrade when they can find a console, and this means that instead of selling most of its units in the launch window, it's a much slower drip than most franchises get to see. Similar to how Miles Morales was right up to the announcement the it would be free with Plus Extra.

Obviously none of us can know for certain, but given how few bundled units there are out there in any given month, and the success of the first game, it seems like a much more likely scenario.

@munstre People are happy to spend the bigger price point. And that game they play that was bundled will wow and delight and create new fans for the series going forward. It's a great move from Sony.

with gamepass and ps+ the switch basically becomes a monopoly in retail games. No reason to buy anything anymore with 800 games and counting...

@munstre It's might not be how much PS5 stock is available. It could be how many Horizon fans get their hands on one (scalpers, etc). Also I would argue that fans of first party franchises are very likely to wait for the latest console from Sony. Furthermore games like Horizon, Spiderman and GOW are often seen as collectibles by Sony fans and therefore a lot of physical sales. I know dozens of people that waited for a PS5 for this reason before getting the game. If anything, bundling the game that many new ps5 buyers might want is smart. This is just conjecture though. No objective perspective would result in a definite correlation here as we dont know for certain. (As someone above said)

@mariomaster96 I have a suspicion that the switch will top the charts in lifetime sales. Homes are acquiring multiple units similar to the gameboy colour plus.

@CynicalGamer FWIW, even series that traditionally perform poorly seem to do very well on Switch. Kirby, Metroid, etc. The top top top sellers seem to be socially driven (please don't start me on the horrible ACNH and half-baked sports titles) , but even the non-top sellers sell better than they have on any other hardware.

@Ralizah HzD also hit big discounts starting like 3 months after release with propelled sales pretty heavily as well, though. We'll see how long the legs are with the new pricing models of holding high value for a long time. I think Jimbo himself already really clarified their sales position with referring to it as "opening week" and comparing directly to box offices. For them I think most of their sales are week 1 and then it's downhill from there, which is why they're so resistant to day 1 subscription games. Heck they could do day 90 and probably not see much shift. It's really one of my top 2 "New Sony" series at this point, but that alone tells me it ought to be one of their poorer sales performers... If I like it, it's bound to be a sales disaster from their "blockbusters only" perspective

I don't know why so many people want to simp for HFW. It's just another Ubisoft game. People chose Elden Ring over it and Sony is trying to bolster it's number by giving it away for free. The doesn't mean that it was a failure. Just look at the facts and be reasonable.

I’m 100% Switch these days. Whether I’m on my couch, at my desk, in bed, or on the bog. Very convenient gaming machine. Thankfully it’s silent as well.

Just had a look at the weeks console sales charts, just been updated.
They are not in a good shape production wise, there is absolutely no doubt the console is in high demand and sales out quick, but to third again world wide shows the massive production issues they have.

Who knows when it will end with demand on electric chips for all devices are massive, take the car industry for one, attempting recently to secure more chips for cash. It’s must be a purchasing departments nightmare.

@naruball If they increased the price of the bundle they would be basically increasing the price of the console itself and every youtuber would have made a video about it calling Sony worse than that Austrian.

Talking of micro chips have noticed this year in the UK the new line of TVs from various manufactures are in shops for sale, LG and Samsung.
Guess who’s are not or due soon.
Sonys, I bet that is chip procurement again the same as the PS5 issue.
Maybe they need to splash some cash and secure more chips, else they gonna have a poor electronic sales year all round in 2022.

@NEStalgia H:FW has never been on sale even once on PSN and physical edition has never had a proper discount. On Amazon, for example, you can get the PS4 edition for £45 but this is discounted from the retailers margin, Sony actually make the same amount of money per sale. Even then, £45 is still more than new switch games would sell for, which does raise another issue with the per unit method of sales tracking.

@ChrisDeku Yeah, Sony's definitely gone full Nintendo regarding their pricing. Or at least 75% Nintendo. They seem to offer somewhat less mediocre discounts after a year or so than Nintendo does. I expect it to go to $45 or $50 by maybe (maybe) Black Friday. Gone are the days it was like $30 3 months after launch with HzD.

Does Nintendo discount that much for currency exchange in UK? In the US Nintendo games are $60 all the time, and the best they ever discount is 10% off, years later. Sony at least still does 20% after a long time. But...meh. If they start moving 1st party into the sub even a year late, I'll probably switch to Extra and stop buying the games. The pricing has become gross.

@NEStalgia I've already seen new copies of HFW going for $39.99 on some sites. It'll be $29.99 on BF somewhere.

I have actually noticed that Sony's previous strategy of cratering sales prices mere months after release has slowed down a bit, which is good to see for the early purchasers who were getting burned with copies that lost 70% of their value within a year of release. Although the $70 MSRP doesn't seem to be lasting very long. That's purely to juice the enthusiasts before the games go down to their 'real' price that most people are willing to buy at.

@NEStalgia Nintendo will probably adjust for the exchange with the next console but right now they are $60 = £50(PS5 $70=£70), and the mainstream high street retailers that normally charge full price charge £40 on release for most of those switch games, not sure why but I assume some kind of arrangement with Nintendo to be allowed to price Effective RRP below digital.

@ChrisDeku I still can't get used to the UK idea that retailers don't charge MSRP at release. In the US all retailers are full MSRP at launch, with only rare exceptions. I went all digital for a few reasons this gen, but I'm kinda wondering how digital is doing so well when it seems pricing has collapsed for physical overall even if it's after a few months of release.

It's not brutal on Nintendo only because they milk everyone forever. It's not brutal on XB because Game Pass (I know I know everyone here but Sammy thinks that's a bad word ), But Sony's just killing me on digital while I watch physical buyers buy things for half price a few months in then sell them back.

For digital the pattern really seems like it's not worth buying anything for a year or so after it comes out where sales begin to be real. If they do start reliably putting first party on Essential after a year, it would definitely be more worth it to me to sub than to actually buy stuff at that point. $45-50 a game a year late, or just sub for the year and get everything for like $60. It's still day 1 if you're a year behind on your backlog....

@NEStalgia Don't tell me you bought the digital-only PS5. If you're going digital only, might as well just sub to the subscription service. Because, yeah, they're going to milk you for every drop you're worth on their own store.

Game Pass is funny. I'm subbed on PC rn, and I've worked out that I can essentially stay subbed forever by just redeeming Microsoft Rewards points every three months that I get from doing some Bing searches and clicking on some links every day. How in the world is something like this even remotely profitable? The only explanation I have is that they've already invested so much money into this particular pit that they figure they have no other choice than to forge ahead and keep expanding their subscriber base in the hope that, over the long run, the service will eventually be profitable.

It sounds mean, but maybe they know the only way to remain relevant in this industry is to practically give away their games to consumers, because the Xbox brand isn't self-sustaining in the same way Playstation and Nintendo are. Drive out the competition, and when you're the only game in town, people are forced to buy from you.

Game Pass isn't just a good value: it's too good to be true. Something's up.

@Ralizah well, 2 machines in the house, one digital, one normal. And it in addition to saving the hundred bucks, both ended up in my cart at bb inexplicably at 4am on that nightmare pre-order night. I wasn't going to mess with that cart,I just hit buy and somehow it went through . I spent 6 hours trying and failing to get one in the checkout and somehow ended up having me do both on one order..

But I really don't want to get into physical again. I have those mountains if plastic boxes from 35 years of games. It's just a monument of waste. B but while old games are useful on disc, new ones are little more than keys and preloads.

So digital, but they're being particularly cruel towards digital customers. Another reason xbs digital is a better place for digital.

As for gp yeah I hear about the rewards thing. Mostly they count on people not actually using it (I don't.) And like with all "free" products, they're probably selling your info with those link clicks etc. Same reason Gmail is"free".. It isn't, you're just using your soul as legal tender in the bargain.

They practically give windows away, too. This think mostly they have enterprise by the balls as a global tax authority with unlimited residuals. Anything else they do is a passion project.

Switch will top ps2 total sales only if it reduces the price. 400€ for oled model which cost the same as mighty PS5 digital edition. I may buy it if it’s 300. It’s a decade old tablet technology

Guess the leaker was completely wrong about there being a Ragnarok SOP on the 30th. They're not going to announce a SOP on a Tuesday just two days before the actual showing.

Really telling that Mario Strikers sold so we'll despite being a mediocre to bad game. Just slap Mario or Nintendo on it and it'll sell. Nintendo won't worry about the product's quality either.

I actually like the fact that Horizon's afterglow is so enduring. So many people were eager to hate on the game because "haha SJWs owned!" or "no no must protecc Elden Ring's place on the podium!" in the first month of the game's release and it's good to see the game proving these haters wrong.

Of course they give Windows away. They literally forced people to upgrade to Windows 10, in some cases. Windows isn't the product. It's the access point to the product... on their end.

The target audience for switch is families and I think Nintendo missed the opportunity for it to be the best selling console of all time with switch sports. If that game had been anywhere near the success of wii sports and launched during the pandemic when people were strugglingto get out, it would have blown the lid off the casual don't typically game market also.

@Col_McCafferty I think also the "mobile gaming" thing is something of the smartphone generation which has catapulted in the last 10 years, so you would also see a system like the Switch being popular amongst younger gamers 17-25. Remember gamers are growing to be dads and moms, and they will by default want their young kids playing games also. The Switch is pre teen/teen/young adult ready. I really dont think the Switch's success has anything to do with its "stellar gaming library", it has a lot to do with the current trends in society and ipad/smartphone/.tablet familiarity. I, myself, am an avid gamer, and a little older and nothing has struck me as something that I would want to play on the Switch. I want to discuss quantum physics and plastic waste problems, and not be hunched over with my adult peers playing a Switch..Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't fit.....

@Ralizah All true. But still, I think that's where the "free" comes into it in terms of clicking the links, etc. It's just feeding the data. Plus, it keeps the numbers up with a bigger subscriber base which is necessary for striking bargains with publishers, etc. Things like handing out free subs might not be "free" insofar as it helps them shift that cost to publisher deals, meaning it may not be a true loss. Not that Sony's not also harvesting the same kind of data, they just won't share value

I also just think it's a more "big data-ish" business model in general. I don't think they're just tallying receipts against expenses. I think it's their ability to sink earnings into bigger investments and multiply it so that meager profits become major profits in a way only the big tech oligarchies have scale to do. Plus, Sony needs to bilk customers for all they're worth because the profits on PS need to buy all their failed TV, insurance underwriting, and everything else and still propel them to endless growth, so they need you to pay $50 on the dollar. For MS it's a side-thing so all it needs to do is not hemorrhage cash and increase their footprint. Which makes it operate, ironically, the way businesses used to operate before the "greed is good" business ehtos of the 80's kicked in simply because it operates as an offshoot of an unregulated monopoly (an irony.)

There's other factors. They kind of succeeded in getting rid of physical and going all digital. Everyone hated them for it with Matrick, but they turned it around, passed some of the value to the consumer and suddenly it became beneficial to the consumer. Go figure. But that means they cut out the middle man and wholesale pricing for the most part, and collect all sales revenue directly netting more margin per sale. Obviously digital is huge for PS, but they're still sharing a lot of cash with retailers. And MS hopes that by offering that value up front, they make it back via shifting a lot of spend their way. And, in cases like myself, I absolutely do. Which isn't as revolutionary as it sounds. The consoles themselves have been launched at a loss forever, in hopes to make back the money in game sales. In GP's case, games are offered maybe-maybe-not at a loss, in hopes of making it back with game sales. To a large degree MS And Sony's models aren't as opposite as they sound. It's just that MS is leading with the carrot and can afford to overstretch. Sony is leading with the stick and hoping the masses don't riot, because they have the position of strength. I'd say "today", but really, Sony has always lead with the stick, in every industry. Even when they're losing. Badly. It's just what they do. Wanna minidisc player? Only $300. Still.

Nintendo....well they lead with the stick, but following in the footsteps of Hiroshi "Totally not a yakuza, honest" Yamauchi, who's surprised?

@MakersMark There's a certain irony to not wanting to be seen with a Switch while discussing this on a PlayStation forum as though playing on an "outdated" TV format is more mature than playing on the modern handheld slate While we're all obviously in that camp to one extent, I think that's less "adult" and more "grandpa won't get with the times" The gaming equivalent to using a beige tower instead of a laptop. Switch's launch target market was hipster 20-30-somethings in the modern jet-setting, urban, travel culture (blech), a console aimed at busy adults, not kids (assuming we're not old enough to consider the 22-26 year olds kids...which...(stares and ceiling and whistles innocently) ).

Seriously, though for the mass market, it's a matter of practicality, it's a $350 console that works as a traditional TV console where most of the population doesn't care about "OMG photo realistic gfx!!" in video games that's also portable like modern electronics, so it's adaptable and convenient and also has a huge library vs a $500 console that's not adaptable and convenient and requires sitting in front of a TV like it's 1989. It's just is adaptable to the most lifestyles and has the biggest potential market of all the consoles, and the sales reflect that. And despite mocking the hipster travel set, I don't wander around the world with a Switch, I just use it around the house, but as a busy adult that has way more obligations to do than time to game, I get most of my gaming in sneaking 10 minutes here or there between stuff these days. That means I spend a lot more time picking up a Switch or XCloud on my phone here or there, than sitting in front of a TV with the PS or XSX. In that regard I think the PS TV-box is more kid-friendly....only they have that amount of time to sit in front of a fixed screen.

And for the niche, specifically, classic (old) PS fans, Japanese games are a staple, most of the games we used to buy PSs for have jumped to Nintendo and are either more convenient because they're games that benefit from sneaking brief play time on a handheld as a busy adult, or are exclusively on Switch now, so in that regard, Switch is now most of what PS was before last gen, while PS is now most of what XB was before last gen. And XB is now like PC-lite.

Fan or not, I don't think it takes much to see the broad appeal of Switch. Yes, it largely gets older games that PS junkies hanging out here played years ago, that sell for double the price of what you can get them on PS or XB. But it's market isn't people that linger on video game sites and need to be the FIRST to play every new game. It's, literally, everybody else. Plus those of us with massive backlogs on PS/XB that still never play half the games because we don't have time for them. Half of my PS/XB backlog is now on Switch, and I hate that I'm more likely to actually play them if they're on there, because I'd prefer playing them on the more powerful machines...but......alas...

The switch is doing amazingly, especially since it’s only been on sale for 5.5 years or so, compared the the ps2s 12 years. Still doubt the switch will dethrone the mighty ps2 though.
