The Quarry Supermassive Games 1

We sincerely hope there’s not a Trophy for seeing all of the endings in upcoming teen horror The Quarry, because there’s a whopping 186 of them. No, that’s not a typo: one-hundred-and-eighty-six. The developer Supermassive Games explained in an interview with IGN just how it managed to cram so many conclusions into the title.

“We write it like a movie screenplay,” director Will Byles explained. “Actors are used to a 100-page script [on a movie], the script for this is over 1,000 pages. They can get very alarmed. We have to shoot 50 pages a day, which is unheard of. It's a mad amount of footage.” As you’d expect, there’s a lot of repetition of similar scenes, to account for all the gameplay permutations.

“We worked out 186 different endings for those characters, not just alive or dead – the stories that they have on the way through are massively varied. Branches really are a mathematical nightmare. It's just exponential.” We’re going to assume that the endings number is padded by minor permutations – like a character wearing a hat in one conclusion and not in another – but there will be big differences as well.

For example, the title will account for the relationships formed between characters, and the impact they have on the outcome. “We really like the idea of giving you context, so you can have the exact same conversation, but know that that person has just killed someone and the context changes everything,” Byles continued. Super cool!
