UK Sales Charts: Gran Turismo 7 Still Leading the Pack Following Online Issues

Whether good or bad, the masses are largely ignorant of the complaints of people in comment sections of sites such as PushSquare, and just keep buying whatever they fancy.

You'll probably start seeing the effects next week. It's a shame though, technically the game is the best in the series (especially on PS5), but the current problems are big and needs to be addressed by PD and Sony.

I'm glad to see Stranger of Paradise selling ok. It looks like a good candidate for personal goty. A game that seems like it will be memorable and enjoyable without being technically the best or winner of a popularity contest.

@Apfelschteiner Yep, the people who have these issues like us on sites such as Push Square or Twitter are pretty much a small minority that doesn't represent everyone. There are way more casual gamers that just don't hear about stuff like this or choose to not be bothered and buy whatever they want. It's like this when people complain about a new COD or FIFA, £70 PS5 games or Nintendo releasing a port of an older game with barely anything new for full price and they still dominate the charts.

It's almost like internet complainers represent only a tiny amount of the market. Still, I'd like to think that if there is any bad press arising from this, one of the higher ups at Sony is simply just going to say "fix this".

People get the sense that "everyone" is complaining about something, because they spend so much time with like minded people. They are shocked when the majority doesn't agree with them. That's why it's important to avoid living in echo-chambers.

@BRT15 The only reason I didn't get it at launch was because of the Elden Ring and Horizon double-whammy just before it. I am really tempted to pick it up, and if it hadn't been for these issues last week I may have snapped over the weekend. But now I'm definitely going to hold out until price has gone WAY down or they fix the in-game economy. Server issues are annoying, particularly when you don't even care about playing online much, but the microtransaction ***** is too much for me.

Good to see that GT7 is doing well despite its issues and the overblown criticism it received.

Glad to see it still doing great. Its a fantastic racing expierience. Like above tho, next weeks charts will be the tell tale week. Not that it bothers me so much as im just playing it for what it is and dont even touch the MTX. Should they be there? No.
Are they intrusive nd in your face? No.

Despite its online issues, I’m very happy to see Gran Turismo 7 still in pole position. For me, it’s easily the best game of the year and my favourite PS5 game to date!

While I'm with everyone on the issues being a disgrace, I'm still playing the the thing and also enjoying the racing. Haha.. such a shame they had to tarnish what is such a great racer.

I see review bombing and immediately think, ‘online trolls’ - to the point where if a game has been review bombed, I know it must be something truly special. And GT7 is 👌

I wonder if we’ve got a Cyberpunk issue on a smaller scale. Initial sales strong, followed by backlash and rapid drop in price and value. I know they are two different scenarios at the core, but I think we’ll see some attenuation of sales potential in coming weeks unless there is some move on Sony’s part to rectify complaints.

The coming weeks would be a larger indicator of how much the GT7 issues have affected sales. After all, the credit nerfing patch and server issues didn't happen until Thursday which is towards the end of the week so a large chunk of sales will have already happened.

Exactly, just goes to show how irrelevant a site like Metacritic is. Heck, i wouldn't even be surprised if the only people actively looking at that site are the bunch of trolls giving 0's 1's to games like forbidden west and gt7

Push square often uses 70$ games, blah blah. But that is only for digital. New games/pre-orders (physical disc) can be bought anytime around 50 to 54 GBP here in the UK. Sony sold the digital version console at a loss and thus they are trying to coup the money from their store (which does affect me as I am a digital guy, but on the other hand, you get to share easily with your siblings who live overseas, so I am still happy with digital games). But the price of money for physical discs are not changed for many years now.

@Apfelschteiner Companies usually do that to see if they can get away with it. But when there's an uproar they put on that surprised Pikachu face, even when they intentionally did it.

Reminder Gt sport a mostly online spin off game sold 10 million copies lifetime. Gt7 about to do crazy sales numbers the online complainers can’t stop it you guys to small of a community and Gt7 to good of a game to be stop. Gt7 is the best console racing sim in years.

Won't be buying unless they get rid of the currency purchases and rebalance the game towards fun and not recurrent purchasea.

MTX are still a problem in gaming and this is an example of it. It's a £70, first party, game with some people having paid £100 for the anniversary special edition.

It's absolutely disgusting.

I had no issues with cars being individually purchasable in previous games but this steps over the line for me.

Awesome game! The fake outrage of those that haven't played it is typical of this day and age. I might even start buying mtxs out of spite...

I bet most saying they won't buy it because of MTX and always online have already got it or will buy it. Its why Sony charge $70 because despite the outrage everyone will still bite and get hyped for the next big game.

Despite the MTX and always online nature it is easily the best GT game, its packed with content and the driving feels so good especially on PS5.

It’s an amazing racing game, and I am continually impressed with it. The outage for over 24 hours sucked no doubt, but that is realistically a blip on the radar of a game that I will be playing for years.

Having a blast so far on the dualsense, but I really can’t wait to get my wheel!

@naruball i agree. I can take the valid criticism and if someone wants to give the game a 6/10 based on the isssues and concerns they have thats fine. When someone gives it a 0/10 i would call them a moron and tell them to go dry their tears.

Even I fell for the hype and bought it. I loved GT in the PS1 and 2 days and wanted to give it one last chance. Despite knowing it was online only, even for single player, I saw the great reviews and pre-ordered the 25th Anniversary Edition. Great gameplay but the whole thing is sullied by Polyphony's despicable recent actions. I have now officially given up on this series and the pathetic developer.

I don't know if this is connected to the online troubles the game has been having, but I got 3 weird emails from Sony this weekend, the first congratulating me on achieving the platinum in GT7 in 18 hours and 57 minutes, which is apparently faster than 88% of players, the second, 3 minutes later, welcoming me to GT7 and inviting me to join the community, etc, and the 3rd, sent one minute later, congratulating me on "finding my line" and achieving the Finale trophy, and saying that I only had 13 more trophies to go until platinum.

I don't even own the game and thought I'd been hacked, but everything seems to be alright - GT7 isn't in my library, and my funding source hasn't been abused.

Anyone else had this weirdness?

Yeah, I'd say definitely continue to voice concerns, just know that it will unfortunately be passed right over because the devs are swimming in cash.

@lolwhatno you're missing the point most of us are making entirely. Of course you can complain and you should, if you feel like it. But you should accept also criticism of the point you're making, if others feel it's invalid.

Personally, I find the point that the game should have been mostly single player valid. That doesn't mean I agree with it getting 0s for it. Or the fact that it was unplayable for a day, the end of the world.

Not surprised. I am not going to stop playing GT7 because of a 1 day server glitch.

Doubt it will turn away many car/racing fans from buying it either.

Online reviews probably aren't going to tank PD or anything but you're kidding yourself if you don't think they've translated to a few lost sales. Just as many people don't keep up with gaming websites, they also don't do much research past "what's the Metacritic score?"

I'm assuming Sony/PD cares more about those lost sales than they let on.

I was interested in Returnal but it turned out to be just too hard-core for me, so I didn't buy it. I haven't banged-on on in every thread I could about it's difficulty level and how ridiculous I thought it was it doesn't have multiple difficulty levels that might make it accessible to me. Why? Because there's absolutely no point. The dev had an idea about what the game was, went with it and stuck with it. Good for them.

The same happens with GT7 and what do we get? Endless complaints from people that they can't just whip through it in a weekend. Are worried that the servers would disappear even though that makes no sense because they would lose all of that income from the evil MTX transactions that are forced on us.

Only nothing is forced on anyone. You don't have to buy it, there's plenty of alternatives. You don't have to use MTX to progress. It really doesn't bother most people.

@DeepSpace5D It's pretty cool but I found it tiring after a while and ended back with the sticks. Definitely worth a go, though.

I can't believe there are so many people here that love mtx galore on $70+ games and love always online single player games 🤦 well I hope you get your wish and GOW2 comes packed with those things so it can make the game better!

@Juanalf its only mtx galore if you dont want to play the game you've just payed for. Ive got 98 cars and half a mil after 30hrs with no money spent.

Why would anybody buy 100k cr for £2, when they can earn double that in 20 mins by actually racing (the reason they bought the game in the first place)?

The alway online is not good okay... but everything else is just hating and trolling not more. Let the people have fun with what they want to. Therefore YOU are destroying the franchise the same way polyphony does. The credits grinding is not a legitimate reason because you can still make almost a million in an hour if you want to. Also, that's not how to play a game like this. It's a racing game with setups, liveries, scapes, fight in a round after tenths and hundredths of a second, etc. everyone who's yelling about the nerf here isn't a racer in my opinion and never will be. I strongly recommend these people to play grid legends and finally stop flaming.

And yes, people can just not buy it. And I'm saying that that has probably happened, even if not reflected in these sales figures, based solely on Metacritic. Just don't think it's wise to write off a terrible score as something that has no impact overall... it simply just does. If metacritic didn't matter and no one used it, it wouldn't still exist.

Broader point: I'd argue Sony potentially leaving money on the table does matter, to them, a lot. And a poor review on metacritic probably means some lost revenue, which is kind of the opposite of what they are going for.

@lolwhatno By all means, complain and complain loudly about the always online. I have, and will continue to do so until I can drive on my schedule instead of Polyphony's. I'm neutral on the MTX, but those who find that irksome should sound off. It's the absolutism that bothers me.

I'm sure I've read comments in the past few days from people who have put plenty of hours into the game but now have an all consuming hatred for it because the prize money was lowered. It's like burning a book because you don't like one of the chapters. Or digging up an entire garden because the tomatoes didn't come up and then, in the case of some of these folks, salting the earth so that nothing can ever grow again. Absolutism just gets me down.

@zupertramp I guess my point is that the vast majority of people will have no issue with the game as it is, so any loss would be insignificant. For some the ability to just buy cars or tuning parts using MTX would actually be appealing, might even tip them into buying it. There are differing points of view and expectations.

The rest of my ramblings were simply trying to make the point (badly) that some games, or aspects of them, simply won't appeal to everybody. I don't see the need for some of the extreme reactions (wishing ill of the devs, for example) and the accusations of fanboyism etc. levelled at people when they don't agree.

At the end of the day I think some folks are missing out on a great game for no real reason. But each to their own.

@SJBUK Fair points. Actually hadn't even considered that MTX might sway someone toward buying but when you mention it, that makes sense. Sometimes your time is just more valuable than the convenience cost. Totally get that.

So yeah, could be that any non purchasers (like myself) whose decision was based on reception are balanced out by others who simply want MTX. Still, I can't imagine anyone actually wants the game to have an online requirement.

In any case, my view was/is that the current metacritic score isn't doing the game any favors and probably hurts it more in the long term as some of the initial excitement surrounding the game's release wears off. Just seems like something worth addressing if I'm Sony. Time will tell I guess.

Sure, the game has components some people may not like but the outrage and review bombing is just disgusting. I am really liking the game and never do i feel obligated to buy mtx. Mtx in games never really bothered me and i never spend money on them. It is a nice option for people who like a special skin or something that would otherwise not be in the game. Chill and just enjoy games.

The micro transactions thing is being blown out of all proportions. Anyone I know who actually has the game are very happy with it. The micro transactions are practically invisible. I will never use them and I never used them in Gtsport either.

The thing is, you will never be expected to pay for a car with real money. A minority of internet loud mouths, fueled by click bait articles from unscrupulous sources have them up on their high horses talking poo.

The people review bombing GT7 are not fans of the series. They're doing it to feel important and self righteous. They know nothing about Gran Turismo.

No you didn't. Sorry if I was abrupt. What I picked up on is, you think that GT7 is being bought by people who don't really know what's going on which isn't the case. As far as I'm concerned this little internet hate campaign is well out of order and fueled by miss information and the truth being twisted. Sorry for being abrupt.

@tinCAT-zero I'd say I am a fan of the series, having bought all of the games since 3 (except for perhaps the motorbike one). The only reason I haven't already snapped this up is the price and proximity to two other big releases. But the grind has always been my least favourite aspect of previous GT games, as it locks away content behind HOURS of busy work. What particularly sticks in my mind were the Ferrari 330 P4 and the Jaguar XJ13 in GT5, two beautiful cars that the game hyped up. But they cost (I just double checked) 20 million credits each. I would have had to play for hours and hours just to unlock those two cars.

The fact their introducing microtransactions as an option to circumvent the grind is bad enough, but then to reduce the credits you earn in game a couple of weeks after all of the reviews have been written is inexcusable and feels incredibly exploitative.

The grind is much more enjoyable in GT7 and not near as difficult as previous GT games. The game is very generous with credits and free cars. People are saying it's paying out less credits but I haven't noticed. That could be miss information. I've played for very little time and I received a trophy the other night, because I have 50 cars in my garage. I've only bought a few second hand cars and the rest were for completing races and challenges.

It is true about some cars being 20,000,000 and that is expensive, but that was the exact same in Gtsport. There are cars in Gtsport that I would have liked but I never had enough credit to buy them. I'll say one thing, I never once though for a moment I'll take out my credit card and buy this.

The asking price of €75 where I live is also very expensive and I'd always have liked to have gotten it cheaper but I don't regret it.

The micro transactions in GT7 are practically invisible and completely non intrusive. My advice is, buy the game, you won't regret it. That's a promise and if you can get it cheap go for it.

@tinCAT-zero That's not how I meant it come across. Maybe I should have said that they are not aware of the complaints because ignorant often has a negative connotation. Or maybe they just don't care. My point was more that people can complain all they like, but people are still going to buy the game presumably because they enjoy it. I haven't played the game personally. From what I heard, there are microtransactions, but they don't interfere with the enjoyment of people who don't want to engage with them. An online connection is required, but it's not obvious to me why that is necessary. It seems to me that the sensible compromise would be to have an offline-only mode in which you can play the entire campaign, but you can't use the save data for online play.
There was a day when the game was offline, but that is not a reason to not buy the game.
People enjoy complaining about games and companies more than they enjoy playing them sometimes. It's all very opportunistic and inconsistent.

Ok I picked you up wrong. People who are complaining though, are trying to effect sales of the game. The online only is unfortunately due to the FIA and supposedly to combat cheating. It would be better having an offline mode but I wouldn't hold my breath. The micro transactions are practically invisible.

@tinCAT-zero i can see where your coming from and i too love the game and haven't let any of the bad press get in the way of my enjoyment. Infact id say its easily my GOTY so far. I cant help but find it a bit sus that the mtx are fairly well hidden and then the credits are rebalanced. It almost looks like people wasn't dipping in to their pockets enough so they have made the temptation harder to resist by lowering in game payouts. Im sure its not but i wouldnt call anyone crazy for assuming that. The racing tho is second to none. Not even tried an online race yet.

Where is the proof that the credits payout have been reduced? That's what I'd like to know, because I haven't noticed if that is the case

@tinCAT-zero the proof? It was was listed in the new patch adjustment notes . Some races have had their payout cut by a considerable margin.

Of course the sales are still great. Review bombing of major console titles are often done by people who never owned, planned to own, or could own the game.

People say whatever they want, owners know what a fantastic masterclass of a game it is.
