The idea of riding huge dragons into battle just seems like such a perfect fit for video games, doesn't it? As we learned with Lair on PlayStation 3, though, a great idea needs to be backed up by solid execution. Century: Age of Ashes is a slightly different kettle of fish, being a free-to-play multiplayer title rather than a singleplayer adventure, but it already looks like it could finally deliver on that fire-breathing promise.

Announced nearly a year ago for PC, the game has been confirmed for release on consoles. Developer Playwing has stated it will soar onto both PS5 and PS4 in 2022, following an initial Steam early access release this December. When it does launch on consoles, the game will support cross-play and cross-progression on all formats.

The game itself has you playing as one of three classes in multiplayer arena battles. You'll engage in dogfights with other dragon riders across three team-based modes — Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Spoils of War, in which the goal is to gather gold. Playwing will apparently be adding more dragon classes in the future, and you'll be able to customise your rider and beast with a range of cosmetics, unlocked as you level up.

It certainly looks like a fun time to us, but what do you think? Are you interested in Century: Age of Ashes? Are you disappointed it's not a game about the history of cricket? Beat your wings in the comments section below.
