A new Kotaku report based on several sources gives an overview of Rockstar's plans to remaster a number of classic titles. The PlayStation 2 GTA games are apparently first on the agenda, but the article also briefly mentions that the developer is prepared to revive Red Dead Redemption.
Ever since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 — well, even before that — fans have been asking for a Red Dead Redemption remaster. After all, the game first released over a decade ago — way back in 2010 for the PS3, if you can believe it.
And again, the report says that Rockstar plans on doing it — but it could all depend on how well its first wave of remasters sell. In other words, it's supposedly testing the waters with its GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas remasters before it commits to more remaster projects.
Are you hoping that all of this pans out? Keep an eye out for wanted posters in the comments section below.

I’d actually rather have a RDR1 remaster over GTA tbh…
That what i want from rockstar.red dead redemption remastered.about a bully and and a manhunt🤔 remake.now that Will be legendary.word up son
I’d rather it was remade in RDR2’s engine than just a remaster. It really really does not play well these days. I was pretty disappointed going back to it last year.
@nessisonett Yeah, how awesome would it be if they added the RDR story into RDR 2, so you could play the whole story back-to-back?
After so long, now they mention a remaster? This was left in the gutter on ps3 for all this time!
@get2sammyb Yeah, it would be pretty great since they have the map there already. It’s really just Mexico that they would need to create from mostly scratch.
Replayed the first one last year on the xbox one x and it looked and played great, would still buy again if using the rdr2 engine though...
I don't care about GTA remasters, i may buy San Andreas if it gets really good remake, but all i want is RDR
@Deljo i'm replaying it on my ps3 haven't played it for a while too, have the goty edition 😁😁👍👍
Vice City Stories would be one I'd like to see come back.
While I had fun with being a cowboy on RDR1 I actuallyalways thought the story left a lot to be desired. Then I played RDR2 and liked that one way more personally but I'd be down to give RDR1 another shot with the context of RDR2.
They had better get started on developing this immediately because remakes/remasters are hot right now.
But by the end of 2022 when true next-gen-only games come out, it may be too late.
Remaster BETTER mean remake.
Rockstar is already slow as hell releasing games, I wish they would not put any man hours into old games. Bring on GTAVI.
@Atreus97 you are right on that, even though they have left it for so long to remaster/remake this game smdh
Remake using the RDR2 engine is a no brainer. 60%+ of the map is already done! Plus it must be possible to port much of the animals, vehicles, people, assets and their animation straight from RDR2.
Just add some wrinkles to RDR2 Marston. They don't even need to re-record the original voice acting either, surely? Assuming the quality is good enough.
Make it happen Rockstar.
Bad move tying RDRR to GTA3 trilogy remasters success. As someone who played those games for the first time ever in the past couple years, they are not good. They have not aged well and will need a lot of quality of life improvements, not just prettier graphics.
I can't see the point of pre GTA V remasters , the core joy of them was the freedom. The freedom has been done so much better in GTA V and RDR2. The old ones are painfully dated, even GTA IV. Unless they come up with full on Remakes of course.
It’s gonna happen.. people are gonna gobble up the GTAs
There must be an unfilled opening at Rockstar for a creative story writer. Something new would be nice for us old folk.
So lame. Come up with some new original content. Tired of mega developers cashing in up to 3 times on the same old game. It's insulting.
I tried to replay RDR after finishing RDR2 and it felt a little amateur by comparison. That’s not a slight on RDR exactly but RDR2 was just so incredibly detailed and rich, it was jarring going back to the first game immediately after.
I don’t think it helped that I couldn’t remember anything about RDR when I played RDR2. I didn’t remember who Dutch was for example (I think I enjoyed the story even more because of that - the gradual decline). But going from the hugely developed characterisations in RDR2 to the cartoon-villain-like characters in RDR was a little jarring.
I’m definitely up for giving it another chance though. I’ll probably enjoy it more now some time has passed since completing RDR2.
When I played RDR when it originally released, I absolutely loved it (and Undead Nightmares). But RDR2 took the bar and raised it to the stratosphere. It’s my favourite open-world game ever if I’m being honest.
I hope they bring Max Payne 2 and Manhunt 2 to the store.
Max Payne 3 would be great as well.
RDR is a great game.
Played through RDR on PS3 recently. Still an awesome game, I'm not sure it needs the remaster treatment just yet though.
There's plenty they could do with older titles. Bully is one, also I think a Max Payne remake of the first two games and the 3rd getting the remaster treatment would be a much better use of the company's time.
@Milktastrophe I have to agree with you there. They're ugly and control so, so badly. Upping the resolution will do nothing to change that and in the case of the visuals will just serve to highlight how ugly those games really are. I mean they were never lookers even for the time.
RDR is a much better candidate for a basic remaster.
Edit: just seen the other article that states they will be giving it new graphics in unreal. But sounds like it'll play exactly the same so 🤦🏼
Games like this will be perfect for Switch to play on the go, while GTA5/6 are better on PS5. If only these GTA games came on the poor Vita a couple of years ago.
Id like them to do red dead revolver to be honest as that is the one i've not played. Redemption is one of my favourite games ever, so i'd probably be in for a remaster/remake - and i am also on board for similar treatment for Vice City, which is still my favourite GTA
Rather wished Sony had used $$ from GTA Online & RDR Online exclusives towards an RDR/Undead Nightmare remaster instead! (Albeit,I can see why they did it with GTAO being the mtx cashcow for Take-two that it is).
I'd rather the simplicity of RDR without all the stamina, horse stamina etc.,but I can see them more likely to link things into RDR Online rather than miss out on that mtx money.
I would like them to add some mentions of arthur and Sadie since they were such integral parts of Marstons life. Maybe a few lines of dialog
Haven't played any GTA games like in 20 years. RDR is so much better.
Let's be real, the GTA remasters are gonna sell a lot.
Even if they don't have any good upgrades to them, the pure nostalgia will be the selling point for most.
It's just a matter of time at this point.
@Dodoo which is why they use this propaganda to convince people that buying GTA will lead to a RDR remake. Smart marketing!
hey hey if rdr1 comes out il snag this on steam ,xbox and playstation.
@Barryburton97 "I can't see the point of pre GTA V remasters , the core joy of them was the freedom."
My main enjoyed main came from the story and for me GTA V was one of the worst in that department 😐
I remember when Bully 2 depended on the success of Max Payne 3. Nine years later...
It'd be cool if it's incorporated into RDRII so you play it both jointly like everyone's wishing. I played the heck out of RDR and a remake would be cool but RDR2 is just so far ahead it'd feel like a step back if all these new additions are omitted for the sake of preserving its originality. The best thing is adding RDR as DLC to RDR2.
@Barryburton97 I liked Vice City better then GTA 5 for the soundtrack alone. 😁
I rather see a Manhunt and Bully though remastered /remade.
Please be true. And include Undead Nightmare. Instant GOTY.
Just want Max Payne 3 remastered incredible game. Played through on hardcore with free aim great memories. Slightly intoxicated and or under the influence added to the experience for sure.
Hopefully the GTA remasters do poorly then. I want new games equally as good or better than old games, not remasters thank you. Time wasted on projects like these is time that would be better spent on creating something new rather than using the lie of nostalgia when in reality it’s done purely because it’s a cheap, quick (compared to making a new game) moneymaker for the studios
given the popularity of the PS2 GTAs, is almost garanteed, a remaster of Red Dead Redeption is gonna happen.
I would love to see RDR1 remastered, only reason why I haven't started RDR2 yet.
