No Man's Sky has had a crazy five years, hasn't it? The game enjoys its fifth anniversary today — 9th August at the time of writing — and boy has it come a long, long way since those divisive early days. Huge, consistent updates have transformed No Man's Sky into a true sci-fi epic, and Hello Games founder Sean Murray is happy to recall the game's defining moments over on the PlayStation Blog.
He writes: "We knew this was the start of a journey, but never expected what a wild ride it would be. Today we’d like to take a moment to appreciate this milestone together. It hasn’t always been easy, but the thing that has been our guiding star throughout has been the players and the community. Behind every update, every video, every feature and line in a patch note is a team that cares so deeply for this game."
But what's next for No Man's Sky? Well, Murray concludes his post by teasing 'Frontiers' — the title's next update. "As we push forward to 2021, our next update Frontiers is something I’m very excited about. In some ways it is just another update, but in other ways it’s a missing piece of the sci-fi fantasy that we’ve always wanted to add, and very fitting for our fifth anniversary," he states. Murray goes on to confirm that Frontiers "is not far off", and that more information is coming "very soon".
Are you still playing No Man's Sky? Is there anything specific that you'd like to see added to the ever-growing game? Reflect on a ridiculous five years in the comments section below.

It still blows my mind how they turned this game completely around from that mess of a launch and they continue to add free content.
I played it when it first came out, and tried to get back into it not long ago, but couldn't.
Fair play, they keep updating this game, it is truly amazing how they have turned it around. I still pop in and out of it every now and again and can easily get lost for hours. Fair play to them and can't wait to hear what the next update brings.
I’d love to start this game again properly but it’s just so daunting now
I hope they do a PSVR 2 upgrade eventually, I found the current version a bit too blurry for me.
It has a faster introduction and gets you off the first system pretty fast but I understand that it feels pretty overwhelming. I'd say try it out again @boucho11. It's so much fun. 😁
Probably the most impressive game turnaround and update support ever?
If this is free dlc, how are they making money?
And, more importantly, where’s the world where I can step in and play a few Joe Danger levels?
So hyped, can't wait to see what wonders this adds.
@jgrangervikings1 I suppose by new players being attracted all the time by the flow of free, expansive content. It must be working somehow.
Was just thinking about this game yesterday. I don't play it much now because sometimes I get insomnia after playing it which isn't nice when you're an evening cleaner. Sometimes dip in Friday and Saturday but haven't in over a month.
First attempt at playing last year led to a bit of frustration. I wanted it to just be "fun" and so I only halfheartedly engaged with all its systems. Of course I quickly lost patience and switched over to "Creative" mode, which removed all the obstacles and progression and consequently all the structure I usually need in a gaming experience. Jumped back in recently on my PS5 and it finally clicked. I'm deeply immersed in its systems. Got my chair right in front of the TV, speakers aimed at my ears, writing my story of space exploration in real time. I'm having an absolute blast with it.

@Boucho11 I feel the same. Downloaded the PS5 patch just in case since there was a dearth of PS5 games a few months ago, but now - it’s way down the list.
It’s amazing how this went from a game that lost all appeal after 15-20 hours at launch to something I’ve had a lot of fun playing for over 200 in the past couple years. So glad they didn’t give up.
When it first came out I gave up before I even left the first planet. I downloaded it for PS5 last week and I now have 35 hours in it. It's a great place to de-stress after a busy day in the office. Absolutely love where they have bought it to after a shaky start. There are much bigger studios out there that could take a leaf out of the HG playbook. Love the last campfire too. Great games for a chill night.
I purchased this when it was going for dirt cheap when no one wanted it and played the original base game just to get the very easy platinum. I kept the disc on my shelf because despite it feeling empty in many ways I still enjoyed the exploration.
It has turned into a far better bargin than I ever expected with all the updates and for all intents and purposes is a brand new game.
If only Cyberpunk could take some cues from this game. Hello Games has worked tirelessly to win back the trust of the gamers they let down and if they were to announce another game, I'd give them another shot. If CDPR announces another game, I'll wait a couple weeks before picking it up.
@ATaco while it would be nice for that to happen Hello games did pretty much go silent for the most part while they worked on the first major update over a couple of years while still getting heavily criticed so. People often want conformation that something is being done to fix problems and you don't always get that from developers until the suddenly announce something out of no where.
@jgrangervikings1 I was wondering this too. They've spent 5 years adding free upgrades over and over.
I'm one of the few who liked the game on launch but they changed it so much, I had to abandon my game and start over to learn all the new rules. Now restarting again because it changed so much
@ATaco would be kool if they added real life earth not just planet with America mean full earth from Scotland to Japan basically all places / other 9 planets in this galaxy
@jgrangervikings1 I think they can literally afford it by virtue of how ludicrously well it initially sold.
I'm so jealous of the players that can find hundreds of hours of game time in this game. It's easily one of my favorite games, but it's like Minecraft in my eyes, I get to a point were I'm self sustaining and I lose interest, then a new update comes out and I'm back for a dozen more hours.
This game is the reason I have been desperately trying so hard to purchase a PS5.
The fact that I still can't find a PS5 yet is the reason I keep holding off on playing No Man's Sky. I can't even explain the torture this feels like anymore.
@Zenszulu That's not actually true, yes HG went silent but only for a handful of months with them releasing one key update by the end of the year it was released what was Foundations what added base building something what is now a huge thing with the game. A few months after that they released another key update and then for its 1 year anniversary they released Atlus Rising a massive game changing update what set the ground work for Next and Beyond. HG were only dead silent for a few months and they outright said they are being silent because actions speak louder then words. CDPR a "AAA" studio should be more open, unlike NMS it isn't going to get that level of treatment so its not like its a case of well they could have something big planned because next gen upgrade aside they are only interested in fixing bugs (what they should) and not improving the shallow gameplay and world.
@WallyWest There's no need anyways. That Witcher game on mobile made a million dollars in it's first month alone. Wouldn't surprise me if they start half assing their games in the future if they can make that much money that quickly and that easily. Hello Games has been plugging away with free content updates for 5 years now, the support has been incredible. HG have redeemed themselves imo but CDPR is rapidly going the way of Ubisoft, Activision, EA etc in my eyes...
One of my favourite games in recent years, just wish I had more time to play it! Can't wait to see what they've got planned next. Frontiers suggests something something very exploration-focused, so who knows...
Feels more like 10 years...
Congrats to No Man's Sky on turning things around so well after only 5 years!
I bought NMS about 5 months after launch for about £8. Even in its base state I went to the centre and back. I did not mind it for £8. But since then I have built a top end VR rig just NMS. In the day I'm restricted to a wheelchair but on some evenings I explore worlds and travel the stars. I have put in over 2000 hours on the PC. It is my escape from the limitations I live with. So... You might of guessed by now I quite like the game 😁
