The latest patch for F1 2021 has removed ray tracing from the PlayStation 5 version of the game. Codemasters' latest Formula One racer is a great title that generally looks the part, but it sounds as though ray tracing has been causing more harm than good on Sony's console.
Writing on its website, Codies states it's "aware of some instability" relating to the advanced lighting technique, and made the decision to remove the feature temporarily in order to give players a smoother experience. During review, we were having some technical hiccups during certain scenes, which may well have been related to this.
"We aim to re-enable this as quickly as possible, and we will provide an update in due course," Codemasters says. So, ray tracing will return to F1 2021 on PS5 as soon as the team can make it work without causing problems.
Have you noticed any technical troubles in the game so far, or has it been smooth sailing? Pull into the pit lane in the comments section below.

I think they should’ve just given included off option and a warning. Removing it if the issues didn’t bother us very poor and shows your not trustworthy with automatic updates.
There were some reports about Spider-Man: MM saying that the crashing was caused by ray tracing. I wonder if this is a similar issue and actually it might be something in the SDK / system software which hasn't been fully addressed yet.
Eek. I did not even realize ray-tracing was in the game. Other than cleaner image quality from the resolution bump, and locked-60 — both very much appreciated — there wasn't a big graphical leap from previous-gen.
I did see a fair amount of screen tearing, both in Quality mode, and Performance 120fps mode. Those were the only hiccups I seen.
Uhhhhh this is so frustrating. For whatever reason the game is bugged af - audio cues the wrong passing car sound that constantly drowns out my own engine sound, and somehow Voice Command is only supported on PS4 version and not the PS5 version.
I must admit I've never had any stability issues with the game, but I certainly felt let down by how it looked once away from the various cutscenes, with RT and how excellent all other PS5 games have looked F1 2021 kinda felt like I was playing an early PS4 game at times...
Dirt was not looking great as well! I remember seeing a video just before the launch of the new consoles it was running on Series X & it looked like a 360 game🤔 come on Codemasters this is not a good look.
@eagletrippin I have similar impression. As physics are pretty OK graphics quality and features doesn't utilize capabilities of PS5. Bolids look more like wooden models instead of their carbon flexibility nature. And the biggest loss is lack of DS motion sensor steering controll. Tomorrow I will go on Fanatec CSL cause L analog driving is far from cockpit "immersion" feeling.
@render yes it can cause that and it does it on the SX as well in the new COD I had to turn it off as it kept turning my console off and other's had this problem. I heard on the PS5 it bricked some consoles and Warzone some on PS5 have to turn off HDR to get the game working at 120FPS
Only thing I visually picked up on is during interviews the drivers caps were reflective, now they aren't, after the patch
If you play split-screen, the lower player has glitches in his formula mirrors. hope they fix it soon (ps4 pro).
Bought by EA and already delivering. XD
@Artois lol I noticed that and thought maybe that was how they designed it. Like, Why are these dudes wearing glossy hats? Kids these days!😂
@djlard F1 2020 had similar weirdness. The lower screen player would often have no car or pit crew, appearing to be several hundred yards behind the back of the pack and the top screen had two sets of pit crew super imposed over each other! One point, I had the guy in front of the car with two heads!
@David187 I remember seeing videos of dirt and thinking it didn't look great too...then I played it on my base Xbox one via gamepass and it's actually a nice looking game. I imagine with a higher resolution its quite a looker on ps5. Visually it actually looks very similar to Driveclub (has some same people working on it)- and that was one of the best looking racing games on PS4. Basically here you're getting same quality weather effects with a wider variety of cars and tracks.
Dirts also been over looked and quickly forgotten...which is a shame as it's a pretty damn good arcade racer.
If you see it on sale I recommend giving it a chance. Might surprise you. The only thing I don't like is the cheesy American narrator they continue to push on this series. Original Dirt did fine without it...this would too.
@TasteOfMetal maybe they're also implementing raytracing with the sound (like the new Forza horizon is doing). Raytracing apparently doesn't have to be just used for lighting and reflections.
Hopefully this will be fixed soon.
I've not heard of this Ray Tracing in F1. He must be a test driver or something.
I had 2 crashes on the first day on the 1.003 day1 patch. Not one since. Played with performance mode, but I'll try quality now.
@Bleachedsmiles I will give it shot when I get a chance you convinced me 👍
