Sports. Role-playing games. Combine the two and you can come up with something pretty special, as the great Everybody's Tennis demonstrated many years ago. Due out on the 5th August, Dodgeball Academia is reviving this hybrid genre — and the potential is clear to see.
This is a Japanese-style RPG that replaces fantastical battles with dodgeball matches, as protagonist Otto seeks eternal glory as the greatest dodgeball champion. The game's new trailer is all about the lore, and it makes for a fun watch.
What's more, the latest press release provides some more information on what we can expect from the game's structure. "Journey through a full-blown RPG story mode; complete with episodes, main quests, side quests, and school minigames," it reads.
"In a world where dodgeball is life, players join Otto at the academy and train to become the ultimate dodgeball champion. Across eight episodes, players will forge friendships and create rivals, all in the name of developing the best dodgeball team. Level up Otto and develop a dynamic team across a vast and customizable party progression system. All the while, explore the vast Dodgeball Academia and uncover the long hidden truths that reside within the very walls of the academy." What more could you want?
Again, there's a lot of promise here. Let's just hope that Dodgeball Academia lives up to the hype in just a few weeks' time.

Looks great, but Inazuma Eleven is where it's at when it comes to sport jrpgs.
@EchoRange I love Inazuma Eleven. Dunno where the new one went. This does look like good fun though.
@nessisonett they are remaking it from the ground up, original story, original protagonist and every generation of character.
@EchoRange Oh nice yeah, looking it up then it looks as if it’ll be a remake of the Football Frontier arc. Sounds good to me!
The tutorial battle from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (srpg snowball fight) really needs to be extended into a full blown game.
@Milktastrophe look up Wintermoor Tactics Club
@Milktastrophe I’m probably the only person in the world that prefers Advance to the original Tactics.
Cartoony , wacky graphics = instant turn-off .
This looks awesome! LOVE the art style!
Looks interesting. Really like good dodge ball games. There was one on GBA that was pretty awesome. Not sold on this from the demo (the court looks really small) but the concept has piqued my interest.
It's a good year for the 5 dodgeball fans out there.
@EchoRange you mean that game in dev problems for the last 6 years or so?
Mario advanced tennis on the GBA was a very good game with very fun and hard minigames.
This really went under my radar, but it's weird enough that I think I have to purchase it. I never really looked into games like Inazuma Eleven, so I suspect this might be my gateway into the genre.
Looks cool and coming GamePass day one so will check it out!
