The PlayStation 5 launched with a pretty robust lineup of software, but for hardcore fans, Demon's Souls was the pick of the bunch. This remake from Bluepoint Games brought the PS3 action RPG back in style, and it acted as a day-one showpiece for what this new console is capable of. The grandaddy of the Soulsborne sub-genre has returned, and now looks better than all the rest and plays better than it ever did before. So, how did Bluepoint do it?
Noclip, a crowd funded production company that makes wonderful video game documentaries, just released its latest work, and it peels back the curtain on the excellent launch title. It's just over an hour long, and goes into detail on how the studio rebuilt the 2009 title for new hardware. We loved details like Sony having to translate all of the Japanese design documents, the sound team using the exact same SFX files for the haptic feedback, and examining every character model to ensure no crucial details were missed. If you've ever been curious about Bluepoint's remake process, this is an excellent watch.
You'll obviously need to set aside a bit of time for this one, but it's well worth it. Have you watched this Demon's Souls documentary yet? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.

I went from HATING the first 3 hours (I swear I couldn't even make it to the first boss without dying) to getting the Platinum.
Such a brilliantly crafted game!
Hopefully BluePoint is working on other AAA IP like Metal Gear Solid, Bloodborne or even Silent Hill.
Cool I will give that a watch now.
I'm skipping Demon's Souls as it's beyond my skill level but it does look like a great remake!
I watched 10 minutes of this yesterday and it looks excellent. It goes into a great level of detail to help understand their process and they sound like they really love the games they remake.
Watched it last night and really was impressed. Bluepoint is going to be a key Sony PlayStation studio to continue driving growth now and in the future. Never played a Souls game but after watching this documentary, count me in.
Amazing remake Sony needs to acquire BluePoint.
Can't wait to watch this properly. Love things like this.
@dasd2 They already have.
This game really made my ps5 worth it from day 1. Never thought I would enjoy a remake so much.
Will watch hopefully at some point this week. Really enjoyed previous No Clip docs I've watched previously. Horizon Zero Dawn and Doom 2016 are especially great.
I really REALLY need to finish Demon's Souls. I was enjoying it a lot but some other games got in the way and for some reason I never end souls games lol I just never beat any of them despite liking them all!
This will be great to watch later today, thanks for the heads up
@lolwhatno You don't create a image like that and tweet it from a official Sony Japan Twitter account by accident. Sony owns Bluepoint. They'll announce it soon.
@WolfKingk87 they don’t own them, and yes things like that CAN be done by accident before any deal is finalized (or falls apart at the last minute.)
The deal might still happen, but Sony does not own Bluepoint as of today. Acquisitions are not like game announcements, due to many regulations, they are abounded and made public the same day the deal is finalized, or the morning after.
Brilliant, looking forward to giving this a watch, Danny O'Dwyer is excellent and puts out some great stuff. He is currently a regular on the Giant Bombcast which is a good listen for those interested.
@Tharsman Microsoft announced the acquisition of several studios at once during E3 a couple of years ago. They didn’t finalize the acquisitions at the same time at E3…they delayed the announcement(s) until they were ready.
@FATPC I'd guess it depends a lot on the ownership model - any company that floats on the stock exchange would need to be announced same day, but I could see there being ownership models that don't require this.
Here in the UK the records at Companies House are public and are expected to be accurate, but a) that requires for people to notice the update, which is more likely for larger companies, and b) I expect that's not the same in other territories. I'd expect there to be some sort of similar records for tax reasons, but they may or may not be of public record.
@talocaca What changed? On the PS3 version I think I only beat the first area….haha
@Total_Weirdo
I thought the same mate as I’d never played a souls game before but once you learn enemy attacks and where they are coming from etc I completed it.
If you ever see a cheap copy down the line I encourage you to give it a go.
Outstanding game
@Stragen8 mostly quality of life improvements. From the instant loading screens after you die to the ability to send overstock back to the nexus for storage.
Also the game runs at a locked 60fps vs 20ish
@lolwhatno I unfortunately have tons of games unfinished. Including the Souls games lol
@Mostik came to say exactly this, his borne to run series with tamoor playing through the souls games is pretty good and worth a watch if a) you won't play these games or b) if you've already played them
I beat demon souls on ps3 6 years ago.but the remake on ps5 is amazing word up son
Still stuck on Man-Eaters... i hate those guys.
@R1spam Yeah Tamoor is a good guy too, I will be sure to check them out. I haven't played any Demon Souls games yet but it is only a matter of time Thanks for the tip off 👍
For me it’s been the biggest waste of money due to I beat it years ago and it’s just a PS3 game with prettier graphics.
I only bought it because my kid wanted it. It surprises me how everyone is gushing over it.
@OmegaStriver Its the first Souls game? The genre has absolutely changed the industry and inspired devs around the world. You don't know why the first one which was stuck on ancient hardware and different run well would garner interest?
Really hope BP is doing Bloodborne next. It's not stuck on bad hardware, but it's another classic that should be played at 60fps in 4k.
@lolwhatno I'm the same kind of gamer. I don't start a new game before finishing the current one. Probably the best way to fully enjoy a game and to make sure not to have a hugh backlog or a backlog at all.
@Futureshark summon help. It took me about 10 tries although I summoned help every time. I think it's the hardest boss. The rest aren't that hard.
Even after all this time, I still can't believe how good this game looks. It's really hard to go back and play DS1 or DS2 after this.
@talocaca make that the first 56+ hours for me. It was bumming me out; I gave up
I'll get my snack ready 😃
love this game. platinum'd it. looking for excuses to return
All things No Clip are typically excellent, and this was no exception - I really enjoyed watching it.
@Omnistalgic It boggles the mind that so many people don’t want to play new games. I’m much more interested in Bloodborne 2 than wasting a company’s time hoping they remake a game that is less than 10 years old and still works fine under BC.
@OmegaStriver I would much rather have Bloodborne 2 of course, but this is an easier way to get a new Souls game. It certainly wouldn't be a waste of time either a BB remaster would easily be a million+ seller. I never played the DLC for example, BB was early in the gen so might've been skipped by a lot of people, and it's really well done. Remasters serve a market.
@Omnistalgic It people want to play it that bad BC is an option. It would be a waste of resources and i truly wonder how well it would sell. Souls games have never sold that great compared to many other games and you have guys like me that have already played it, still own it and wouldn’t put another dime toward it.
@OmegaStriver Souls games don't sell like Assasin's Creed or COD, but they do sell very well. BC does not provide BB at a higher frame-rate and resolution and doesn't rival want Bluepoint has done with the original game. At the very least they could patch it.
Also, using small communities like us to gauge interest is too small a sample size. If you really want to know how it would sell look at Director's cut of Death Stranding and GoT coming up. It may be pointless for you, but I would best on a remastered BB selling very well, scoring even higher on metacritic, making back it's money for the devs and overall being the complete opposite of "waste of resources". You may not be interested in it, and that's fine.
If people are struggling to progress with this I recommend summoning other players to help you (this might lead to a bit of a wait unfortunately as I don't think the co-op was updated from the original - no option to invite friends)...or join other players and help them (this is the easiest way to amass souls as if you die in their world you get to keep the souls you gained). Obvious stuff but something I completely overlooked first time round on the PS3...but have definitely found useful since playing the remake.
@OmegaStriver
I think DS is different because not many people actually played it (the original). The genre only became very popular with the PS4 era.
I wouldn't buy a BB remaster / remake either.
Loved DS. Best PS5 game.
This was well worth a watch. I love getting into the nitty gritty technical details of things so I enjoyed the developers talking about how hard they hit Reddit, the wiki, watched playthroughs etc to gauge what people liked and what could be improved. I think they really tried their damndest to respect the spirit and execution of the original game while ironing out some of the more frustrating flaws. Video tutorials in-game showing exactly how to do it is something I've liked since Human Revolution, and with something as nails hard as Soulsborne games this was definitely a wise move. I love that they're even checking trophy details to see that more people get past Phalanx as compared to the PS3 original version, so it's a little acknowledgement that they've done their job and people love their remaster.
@Omnistalgic Yeah when I got a PS5 I was kinda miffed that Bloodborne still plays exactly the same as it did on the base PS4 and PS4 Pro, with it's 1080p30 lock, crappy frame pacing and shimmering caused by poor anti-aliasing. The game is amazing, one of the GOATs, so it really deserves better, especially since something like inFAMOUS: Second Son cleans up really nicely on the PS5, best it's ever played.
@zekepliskin Yeah, with the purchase of those PC experts I'm hoping we will see the best stuff Sony published patched up and released in superior.
Demons Souls on PS5 is stunning, and was my 4th Demon Souls platinum... I think the only time I'm ever going to stack a plat like that..
