Arcadegeddon. That name's a bit of a mouthful, isn't it? Well, fortunately, it's not quite so tough to explain what it is: this is a colourful multiplayer shooter from Illfonic, the team behind Predator: Hunting Grounds and Friday the 13th: The Game. This looks to be something very different, though, with a fair amount going on beyond the surface.

Inspired by "[The] Muppets, Gorillaz, and 90’s punk rock", Arcadegeddon is set within an arcade on the brink of closure. Either playing solo or in four player co-op, you'll save the establishment by battling against an evil corporation's virus, and against other players. There's a mix of PvP and PvE in here, but that's not all. In addition to your usual running and gunning, you'll also take part in mini games, complete various challenges, and explore ever-changing biomes. It sounds pretty mad.

If you're struggling to wrap your head around this mish-mash premise, you don't have to wait to give it a shot. The game is available right now on PlayStation 5 in early access. For £15.99 / $19.99, you can jump into the game way ahead of its "proper" launch in 2022, and take it for a spin. Developer Illfonic is planning lots of updates in the meantime, so it'll be something to check every now and then as it evolves.

You can read plenty more on the game via the PlayStation Blog. We're certainly intrigued, but what do you make of Arcadegeddon? Tell us in the comments section below.
