Sony is breaking down barriers for PlayStation’s biggest intellectual property, as part of a multi-faceted strategy that will see the release of television shows, movies, and, yes, smartphone games. The platform holder has been hiring for a new mobile-focused division for a little while, and boss Jim Ryan has hinted that we’ll see the “first fruits of this sooner than you might think”.
As part of an interview with Axios, the Geordie executive outlined his organisation’s reason for exploring smartphones: “The thinking here is that our IP portfolio is in such a strong state right now, it seems perverse to restrict enjoyment of it to our existing PlayStation community.” It’s a quote that we can’t imagine sitting well with Sony enthusiasts, but there it is.
Ryan wouldn’t say whether PlayStation will be developing the mobile games in-house or acquiring new studios to do that, but it sounds like this is an initiative being spear-headed by the very top of the company – it’s not some throwaway whim. “We are working on a number of models to open up mobile,” he revealed, vaguely.
It’s an interesting time for Sony, as it looks to new audiences and revenue streams to expand the reach of its brands. Obviously, everything links back to the experiences it offers on the PS5, but for the first time in the business’ history, the firm is quite literally thinking outside the box. Whether any of this will pay off, of course, remains to be seen.

If it is connected to PSN and allows us to get trophies then I’ll be very interested in mobile Sony games. If it doesn’t I’ll stick to the VITA. Still have quite a few JRPG games to play.
I don’t really see the point in gaming on my phone (at least personally). When I go outside of my house I am rarely on my phone as is. But I won’t complain if its a free feature added to the PS app.
If Sony actually gets good mobile content and ties it in with having a Trophy system that connects to your PlayStation consoles I'll actually be pretty interested
It's a shame that Sony is changing so much... What happened to the old Sony.
As for playing PlayStation games on mobile, I have no interest in that. I don't believe in games on smartphones but that's just me. A phone is meant to be a phone.
Instead of Sony tapping into mobile, I'd much rather have another handheld like the PS Vita 2 or something.
“The thinking here is that our IP portfolio is in such a strong state right now, it seems perverse to restrict enjoyment of it to our existing PlayStation community.”
Jim Ryan really is an expert at saying the wrong thing, huh? Not that it's wrong to want to extend your reach, but he must know that kind of quote isn't going to go down well with his primary supporters. Surely he knows?
@Snake_V5 change is good.
@BUDSclass201 I agree but only if the change is done right.
I'm going to be irked as all hell if Sony's first-party developers are now being forced to work on mobile games.
I think people are overthinking this. They're not going to be porting games like Horizon to phones because the gameplay just can't work on a touch screen. What they'll do is make smaller phone based games with their IP's like Nintendo has been doing. As long as the development doesn't take resources from their game development studios who cares? They're making a mobile division so it seems like none of their regular studios will be impacted.
Did he really use the word "perverse" to describe such an act? Interesting use of words.
@Jayofmaya You clearly haven’t tried sticking Crash Bandicoot: On The Run up your bum.
not bothered either way I won't be playing anything they make. Clash Of Clans is the only game I play on Mobile & that is once in a blue moon. I play my games on PS4/PS5 that is it now.
Copy and pasted from the last article b/c I still find it odd that Sony has had a mobile division for 5 years now yet Jim Ryan doesn't seem to know it exists. 🤷♂️
5 years ago Sony set up a studio to make mobile games called Forwardworks.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2016/03/sony_announces_studio_dedicated_to_making_mobile_games
Which then announced a bunch of games.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2016/12/sony_announces_slew_of_first-party_smartphone_games
And another game in 2018. (Article had ZERO comments.)
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2018/01/sonys_smartphone_division_reveals_no_heroes_allowed_dash
And last year they teamed up w/ Kadokawa and announced another game.
https://www.pocketgamer.biz/asia/news/72342/forwardworks-kadokawa-cave-interactive-partnership/
So, they've already been doing it for the past 5 years. The only thing they need to do is expand outside of Japan. 🤷♂️
@Snake_V5 Handheld PlayStation was the best PlayStation. What happened to Vita is a travesty.
@BUDSclass201 Change is only good if it's a good change.
I have no interest on playing games on my phone
The films will most likely be awful
The tv show i will give it chance because its HBO
Peverse?? Lol strong use of wording. He could have just said it would be a shame if these ip couldn't reach a wider audience...
@Snake_V5
Like it's something new.
Old Sony had games on mobile and on PC.
I don't mind SONY's PlayStation IP's on Mobile(like small spin off games) but i still detest them putting PlayStation Exclusives on PC tho :-/
Bold prediction time: Jim Ryan is going to burn PlayStation to the ground. This will be the last console generation.
Films and tv show bring them on,the mobile games you can keep Jimmy.
"The thinking here is that our IP portfolio is in such a strong state right now, it seems perverse to restrict enjoyment of it to our existing PlayStation community.”
Jimmy...Jimmy we get it you want more money there´s nothing perverse on that.
Yeah right. Sony execs were probably watching Nintendo make beaucoup bucks with their crappy mobile games and started asking themselves why they weren't getting in on that freemium mobile game action.
The word "perverse" is apt, but perhaps not for the same reason ol' Jimmy seems to think.
Based on those comments, it seems extremely likely that Sony is going the route of Microsoft regarding PC.
@Play Jim Ryan is the problem with Sony yes.
I know what he meant to say, but there are better ways to say: "Look, we have tons of good IP that we might want to take for mobile."
The only thing thats perverse here is corporate greed.
I rather have sony make mobile games on their 1st party games (like nintendo) rather than porting their games to pc, it will be cool to play something like everybody golf on ps4/5 than continue it with cross-save on mobile.
Sony are sitting on a pile of PSP software that would port well over to mobile. Locoroco and Patapon would be a start. They could easily just give away the first few levels and then IAP the rest of the game. The gameplay wouldn’t need much changing at all. Super Rub’a’Dub and Calling All Cars would work pretty well on mobile too.
It might be a push but we might even get a new Wipeout.
Oh God. I don't mind games coming out on Mobile it's good for those that do like to play them but I don't want to see games like Mario Kart Tour and Crash Bandicoot on the Run again. If they do do it right sure change is good as others have said but if they make a pig's ear of it then no it definitely isn't.
@Snake_V5 I agree with everything, but many intelligent people understand the intricacies of the mobile market and I'm sure after PSV, some techs wanted another go at it. Nintendo is having success, but they have to combine the portable/home console SDK into one unit, Sony can't shrink its PS5 to that level lol. Mobile games with controller support might have a future tbh...As phones get more and more powerful, I can imagine Iphone 14-15 being powerful enough to be docked and connected to a TV like Switch. That's a huge userbase to advertise games towards, and honestly, Sony is probably hiring new staff to make a mobile hit as the audience is completely different. The initiative shouldn't detract from our WWS games.
All I got from the headline is that Sony is a pervert
Confirmed: The Last of Us Part III is an Apple Arcade exclusive.
No thanks on the phone games. I've tried to play games on my phone before and I've just never enjoyed that experience. But it's not a big deal as I doubt the big 1st party Sony studios will bother with them anyway.
Sony: it’s perverse to deny our investors that sweet micro transaction mobile moneys!
@Omnistalgic The funny part is that we wouldn't have to take till the iPhone 14-15 for that level of performance. The current generation of phones are already offer that performance.
This is not surprising considering their direct competition wants to expand beyond the console market.
@mucc
I just hope whatever Sony does is more interesting and higher quality than the mobile games Nintendo has made.
Blah blah.
You are only now referring to it as "perverse", after nearly 3 decades of PlayStation, because money tells you to say so.
If your product is not unique and different from your competitors, people will have no incentive to buy your product over a competitors. It's basic business. It's one reason why PlayStation has done well over the years.
“The thinking here is that our IP portfolio is in such a strong state right now, it seems perverse to restrict enjoyment of it to our existing PlayStation community.”
Translation: I love money because money is awesome and what's awesome is if we make lots of money to build money with the money that our money is making on our money because money is the most important thing to us..I mean money.
If Jim doesn't play Mr. Krabs in a full live action version of SpongeBob then the world is truly lost and has no future.
Imagine they would extend remote play and include PS Now and it would also support PS Vita or another Sony streaming device. I just need streaming with my unlimited mobile internet subscription 🙃 and can play everywhere 🤩
It feels like everytime Jimmy Jim opens his mouth, Sony as a whole becomes less appealing. They have certainly moved away from the "For the players!" slogan haven't they.
No Jim you idiot, what's "perverse" is you tarnishing the legacy of PlayStation by wasting precious resources on mobile gaming (and PC). This guy needs to be fired immediately, he has been nothing but disrespectful to everything PlayStation stands for.
@Snake_V5 I agree 100%, would rather they try investing into the handheld market again.
