Here's an interesting addition to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart found in patch 1.002: if you own a TV capable of running at 120Hz, the PlayStation 5 exclusive will increase the frame rate of its Fidelity Mode to 40 frames-per-second. The patch is available to download now and works to increase the frame rate for television sets that can handle the boost. With a higher frame rate, the game will run even better whilst maintaining the visual quality of the normal Fidelity Mode. This particular frame rate has been chosen because it divides equally into the 120hz of high-end TVs, meaning frame pacing continues to be even.
You'll need the right TV to activate the frame rate boost, though, so check out our guide on the Best 4K TVs for PS5. Be sure to also dive into the game's setting to make the correct calibrations. The patch also fixes many issues, bugs, and glitches. Photo Mode also sees some love with new stickers as well as visual and effect tweaks.
Here are all the patch notes for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart update 1.002.

That's cool! Weird and unexpected, but very cool!
Interesting. Just bought an LGCX which arrives Saturday, so will finally be able to make use of things like this.
@thefourfoldroot Man you're in for a treat! I managed to get a refund for my Samsung Q90T a few months ago (terrible tv unless you're in a very bright room) and bought a LG CX.
Damn, I wasn't really gaming before that tv, what a superb piece of hardware it is!
Cool! I will test this out tonight
Already beat the story and got the platinum! Looking forward to the 120 Hz option if they ever add Challenge mode related trophies though.
@Olmaz
Stop, I’m trying not to raise expectations unreasonably high! Lol
Interesting, I'll give it a go at 40hz
What about for monitors. I have a Samsung G5 Odyssey which runs at 120Hz+.
@thefourfoldroot Well it all depends on :
If you come from an older LCD and you're doing your gaming in a fairly dark room, expect all you want! Lol
So cool. That’s perfect. Nice idea with 40 FPS. So good for owners of a compatible tv like the LG Oleds.
Will give it a try later. Curious how this compares to the 60 FPS mode.
This'll look nice (well, nicer than 30fps) on my LG CX but ive always wondered why fidelity mode comes at such a huge cost (usually 50%) to the performance. Why is the compromise never 55fps or 50fps instead of 60? Obviously there is going to be a trade-off BUT halfing the performance is way too much of a compromise to be worth bothering with. Even at 40fps (taking 1/3 off) isn't worth it either. Really anticipating the days where you dont have to choose betwwen fidelity and performance.
@KidBoruto Already got the platnium? Jeez...
@Vyns It should be the same... But the last time I checked. The Samsung G5 Odyssey will only run 120hz+ for the PS5 at 1080P since the you need HDMI 2.1 for 4k and 120Hz+, and the PS5 doesn't support the G5 Native resolution of 1440P. So you better off just sticking to the normal fidelity Mode.
@fluggy The reason it’s 30 or 60 is because of frame pacing. They divide equally into each other. Hence why the next step up is 120.
@Olmaz lol I was nearly the opposite. My room faces right into the sun, and gets soooo bright. I was worried about the LGCX not bring bright enough, so I got the Q80T and it's the best tv I have ever had.
Bought my Samsung Q80T to take advantage of all the new features like this, always excited to try them out 🙌🏻
"Addressed an issue where some Grunthors would not count towards the Extinction Event Trophy"
Thank you!
I just tried it out on my LG CX. It looked… worse. Not sure if I have some setting somewhere that makes 120 hz mode look bad. But. Ugh. No thanks. Weirdly enough when switching back to performance RT mode; it still looked bad like a 30 FPS game. I had to disable 120 hz mode in order for the buttery smooth 60 FPS feeling to return. Maybe I just don’t know what I’m doing?
@Olmaz
Yeah, coming from an LCD Toshiba, which will be relegated to the bedroom, so should be a big improvement.
@fluggy Because displaying any framerate that doesn't neatly multiply into the panel's refresh rate results in distracting judder. Traditionally all consoles output a signal at 60 fps, since that's what TVs natively accept. For 30 fps games each frame is repeated twice which results in consistent motion, anything above or below that causes judder since there's an uneven pacing between frames. Theoretically 15fps & 20 fps would also neatly fit, but it's too slow to be useful. For 120hz displays, a frame can be repeated 3x for 40fps without judder.
Ok I can not notice any downgrades with colours or HDR by enabling the 120 hz on my LG E9 from a normal viewing distance.
The fidelity mode with 40 FPS feels really more fluid than the one with only 30 FPS. But Performance RT with 60 FPS is still the one and only mode for me in this game. All is perfect for me in this mode.
@thefourfoldroot
As an owner I can say they are easily one of, if not the best tvs you can buy (provided you havethe right viewing conditions)
I'd like to give you some tips to set it up correctly if you'd like so here goes.
After all the initial setup and stuff you'll need to set certain things up with your ps5.
1. Select the hdmi port your PS5 is connected to then Go to all settings, it should open up the picture tab, next go on additional settings and select HDMI ultra HD deep colour (this is for HDR) then select HDMI port your PS5 is connected to and click it in case it hasn't already done so. You can also turn on the instant game response and AMD free sync if you wish, however PS5 doesn't currently support the options but have been promised in future updates.
2 next you'll need to set the picture mode, make sure your ps5 is on and you can see a picture, then hit all settings again. From the picture tab click on the picture mode settings, it will move to a new tab with picture mode at the top and contrast, brightness etc. Click picture mode at the top and select Game (it may already say Game HDR) in which case do nothing.
3. In the tab that should now say picture mode Game at the top along with brightness, contrast etc scroll down to advanced controls, click it and you should get a tab with dynamic contrast. Select DYNAMIC TONE MAPPING and select HGiG (only use HGiG for Gaming!!!!!.) I recommend leaving all other settings at this point at their default values.
4. Now if the PS5 has not done this already, it will ask you to calibrate HDR, to do it manually you can find it in the PS5 settings as adjust HDR under screen and video. (Make sure you have HGiG) already selecting before going on to the adjust HDR screen otherwise it can mess with the calibration. On the first step of adjust HDR, set it so that the sun dissappears (shuld be 14 steps from lowest) do the same for the 2nd step. For the 3rd step set it to the lowest setting (perfect black). The reason to set it this way can be found in guides on the Internet that would take a while to explain here HDTV test has a good video on it.
I hope these steps help you and others calibrate HDR correctly, you can find alot of this in guides on the Internet Key word is HGiG. If you do have anymore questions just reply to this comment. Enjoy your tv
I really like the photo mode updates. Kinda surprised Insomniac didn't include the "change armor whilst in photo mode" option at launch since it was in Miles Morales.
@Yozora146_
Wow, you are the most helpful guy / girl in the history of the internet. Thanks so much. Hope this helps others too.
Now waiting for the 24 fps mode (120/5), for the TRUE cinematic experience.
@Max_the_German lol
@Yozora146_ About HGIG
First, the setting is Dynamic Tone Mapping and not Dynamic Contrast.
Second, I've tried. I've even played with HGIG for a full month because every "professional" site was telling me to do it. Then I put on dynamic tone mapping and the screen just lighted up! Every color was vibrant but natural. So now I use Dynamic Tone Mapping On all the time.
I know the picture is not as accurate as with HGIG. I even know I'm may losing very fine details in very bright parts of the screen. But I'll be damn, the games look beautiful as they never did before.
You just have to not forget to calibrate the PS5 HDR correctly, and when in game, set the maximum HDR brightness to whatever the max value is (and therefore letting the tv do its tone mapping based on that maximum value).
If you're using HGIG, you have to set the in-game max HDR brightness to the tv value (between 800 and 1000 nits depending of the game).
Sometimes, the best accuracy is not the most enjoyable picture. That's why I also play all SDR in HDR, because the PS5 auto-HDR is fantastic.
@Floki Thanks for the reply Floki.
Your right, the PS5 doesn't support 1440 and mostly upscales from 1080 to 1440, but the latest Odyssey update allows the PS5 to output 4K and the monitor down samples to 1440.
But again, your right 120Hz isn't supported on HDMi 2.0 or less and I forgot about that.
@Olmaz
whoops yeah I made a typo with tone mapping thanks for pointing that out
Yeah I've talked to others who prefer the dynamic tone mapping because it looks brighter and therefore more how they expect it to look, but sometimes it is better to have it the way the developer intended. But hey people can always choose what they prefer.
The reason I don't use it is mostly because it has a habit of raising the black floor, therefore washing out the deep blacks which to me is more noticable than clipping slight detail from bright scenes (I use a very dark room). The other reason is that dynamic tone mapping causes fluctauations based on the information in the image giving different results for similiar scenes. Reminds of how some people leave their TV scene on vivid, 🤮.
I have been having some crashes after the patch :/
@Yozora146_ Urrgh to Vivid mode (or Native colorspace!)
But to be very honest, I haven't noticed any raised blacks on my tv with Dynamic Tone Mapping On... and coming from a Q90T, I'm sure I'm very sensitive about raised blacks!
As for the fluctuations, I agree they may happen, but so rarely that I hardly notice them. I notice this kind of fluctuations in some games (like AC Origins for example), but they persist with DTM off, so I guess it's the game's own HDR implementation.
But as you said, with tvs as good as a LG CX, every user will get what they want, the settings are easy enough to change to whatever you prefer.
I just hope they fix the constant crashing in the first level of the game. I assume the SSD didn't cache sufficiently which lead to crashes, but it was such a pain because I had to unplug my ps5 to get it back starting again. I think I needed 2 hours for the opening 20 minutes... I never want to see that parade again 😤
@tameshiyaku WTF, really? I've seen that information absolutely nowhere!
Do you have a reddit thread or a forum comment page to confirm you're not alone to have this issue? Because if it's true, I would like to be sure it's solved before buying the game.
@Olmaz
I would like to add that I also suffered from the first level crashes as well, what was weirder was that it would crash in random spots and not in the same spot (the opening is relatively on a track). Which was annoying as I'd just finished uni for the day and really wanted to play, I waited until the next patch and got passed the level so maybe its conpletely patched.
I'm sorry but im confused about your comment on vivid mode, are you agreeing or disagreeing with me? Sorry now I'm just worried I've missed a setting or something.
@Yozora146_ I am 100% with you on Vidid : that picture mode should have never existed! (ok, I am a bit hyperbolic, to each their own I guess but I can't understand how anyone would find it enjoyable!)
@helloim_anthony It's a very easy platinum, only a few of the trophies took some extra time.
The new features are interesting.
(I am waiting for the Sony event.)
@tameshiyaku Really sorry to hear that, thats sounds really frustrating. Guess i was fortunate as i didnt get a crash. I hope you persevered anyway, as its a fun experience well worth having.
Loving all the options they give us this gen. Hope it will never stop and everyone will jump on this train of choice.
@thefourfoldroot
Congrats, bought that TV last year and it blew my mind with next gen. Even Sackboy put a smile on my face (+ great soundtrack)
@Vyns Yeah. I have the G7 and it my main screen for my PS5. I cant remember if the upscaler works with the 120hz. The last time I tried 120hz on PS5 I had to drop to 1080P... And well 1080P looks like straight trash since the monitor won't scale the resolution up. So you're stuck with a 1080P image on a 1440P
@Pusher2021
I bounced off Sackboy, but will certainly give it another go if I can convince the wife. I bought Miles morales to show it off.
@Titntin @Olmaz I didn't post anything on Reddit but I had exactly this crash alongside several others: https://youtu.be/jMpOvr4yo3A
This happened twice. Another time nefarious just wouldn't engage in battle anymore leading to a total crash where reconnecting the power was the only possible reboot. I'd always have to restart at the beginning of the parade die to the slow cloud save.
After a while it just worked and now I'm having plenty of fun with the game. I really think it was a caching issue.
@thefourfoldroot Did the same but on a sale I took the plunge and didn't regret it one bit. If you like Astro's Playroom than I would recommend this game. Sony should give some demo's of PS5 games though
@Pusher2021 I loved astros and bought sackboy just after last Christmas but I can't gel with it, there's something about this 'get three stars per level' gameplay that I just don't like.
got rift apart a couple days ago, platinumed it this morning. I couldn't put the game down but I ran into at least 2 pages worth of bugs an softlocks so its great to see them working on all of those issues.
Just sad theres nothin else for me to do in the game.
Rift Apart is the first game where I experienced my ps5 freezing, and it was so bad I had to pull the power plug lol
Thankfully no damage done
Seems to be a list of fixes much bigger than cyberpunk 2077 except I didn’t realise anything was wrong with this game.
@Dan_ozzzy189 Astro's Playroom is typically made with the Dual Sense in mind (showcase). Sackboy has varied and smart levels which felt fresh to me and even liked replaying them (clicked for me). What I didn't expect was the good soundtrack/gameplay. But I know the feeling, if something doesn't click with you in a game it can get difficult to stick with it. Try not to give up on that unless you don't really like the whole concept ofcourse.
@Pusher2021 I will give it another go, it cost me sixty quid so I really should!
@Dan_ozzzy189 And I will take my own advice on The Pathless which I left too soon
I just tried this today, and...WOW.
Okay, I'd settled on the Performance RT before this, and that was pretty darn good - but the Fidelity mode really does look significantly better. It may matter that I was on the pirate planet, jumping between boats on an ocean with a lot of water effects and reflections on things - and it was stunning. It looked good with Performance RT, but this was stunning.
The 40fps didn't feel like as big a hit from the 60fps as I'd expect. Perhaps the supposedly improved responsiveness from using a 120k refresh helped, I'm not sure. But the frame rate drop was not as noticeable as the graphical differences. I think it's a pretty solid compromise, and will likely be my go-to settings for this game the rest of the way.
I should add, my TV is a Sony X900H from last year (still waiting on VRR support on it, just like we're waiting for it on the PS5 itself...c'mon, Sony!)
@RobN
Using the same TV Sony 900h, looking forward to VRR suport on this, overall been pretty impressed with the TV. Tried the game on 120 mode with fidelity and I was very impressed with it.
