Babylon's Fall, the upcoming action RPG developed by Platinum Games and published by Square Enix, has finally returned to the fray with a brand new gameplay trailer. However, the reaction to said gameplay trailer has not been positive. On the official Square Enix YouTube channel, the video has been bombarded with dislikes, and while it's not quite as bad over on the PlayStation channel, it's still hard to ignore the negative ratio.
So why is this happening? Well, if you've seen the trailer for yourself, then you might already have some idea. For starters, it's just a bad trailer. The weird voiceovers, the total lack of sound effects, the annoyingly loud singing — it's not good.
But then the gameplay footage itself leaves a lot to be desired. Granted, this is just a quick look at an in-development title that still doesn't have a release date, but it looks stiff and awkward here. It's certainly not the kind of fast and fluid action that we've come to expect of Platinum Games.
It also doesn't help that Babylon's Fall is now being positioned primarily as a co-op action game — and a live service one at that. There's a clear stink attached to the term these days, and it's abundantly clear that people were hankering for a more traditional action RPG experience.
Compare it to the previous trailer for Babylon's Fall — which was shown during one of Sony's State of Play broadcasts last year — and the difference is night and day.
This is the gameplay trailer from December 2020:
There's an energy here, and a certain spice to the combat. It looks intriguing, and it's a trailer that made us want to see more — hence why we were excited to learn that Babylon's Fall would be at E3.
It's a real shame that the game's now being blasted from all angles, but there's no getting away from the fact that it was a disappointing showing for a lot of eager onlookers. Who knows, Babylon's Fall might shine in its upcoming closed beta, but right now, it's looking pretty rough.

The voiceovers were so goddamn awful lol
Honestly kind of expected from Platinum though
The gameplay looks brilliant brilliant im looking out for this and its still in development i guess so more then enough times to work on it.
Yes, that was bad
Live service co- op did turn me off as well, tbh. I’m just not into that kind of game and prefer my single player action RPG
Glad I wasn't the only one disliking what I saw. Terrible in every aspect. From the looks to the weird gameplay...it seemed a game from 15 years ago
I mean with Final Fantasy 16 coming hopefully within a year, Elden Ring early 2022, and FF Origins being announced today this just seems like a really crowded genre; especially for a game that looks pretty generic tbh 🤷
That screenshot is amazing.
the characters graphics are somewhat ripped straight out of life is strange games
@get2sammyb The hair makes me think of that dude who makes you get the Golden Claw in Skyrim
Platinum games...wait , the company that made that masterpiece called MGS revengeance ?
what is this ? lol .
People are hating on the graphics but that's one aspect I'm actually liking to be honest.
That previous trailer was so good. That had fluid and intense combat, and seemed like it would be a lot of fun. In contrast, the battling in today's trailer just seems so bland.
They had 3 years (they announced this at E3 2018) to set the expectation this would be live service, yet they decided to drop it here. If it had offline support I'd easily forgive it, but according to the website it is online only, so hard pass.
Monster Hunter World showed pretty well you can have a service type title, without forcing online and still see a huge number of people willing to check the game out. The combat in the last trailer also looked much faster, while it felt in slow motion by comparison today. Shame, but there are plenty of other games to support over this one, I'll get over it lol.
Is it just me or do the graphics look REALLY bad?
The trailer on the square-enix youtube page looks like the Switch port, lol.
Looks like an early PS3 game. Felt like Square had a couple really dated looking games on the docket for E3. Square is really all over the place when it comes to the quality of what they release.
Wow. And not in a good way. Just wow.
I think the problem is the action RPG Souls style is so done to death. It doesn't look that different compared to the first teaser, it just doesn't stand out at all.
I placed my vote strictly on the trailer. I had no knowledge of the game's history or anything else.
Two very weird trailers from SE tonight. And not a sign of FF XVI. I'm hoping they were holding something back for a playstation show none of us have heard of.
Also 100% agree with the comment about singing and the accents. Both were either terrible or completely out of place.
@Shepherd_Tallon I'm willing to bet that it will most probably be shown during Sony presentation if there is any this month. With such huge title as an "exclusive", Sony is dumb for not going all out promoting it based on this fact.
Damn, such a downgrade from the last trailer. Graphic look downgraded, combat looks stiff and weird which contradict Platinum portfolio and added the fact that is a bloody "LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE SERVICE" game which is hitting a downward trend. You would think after the live service disasters that is Avengers and Anthem would make SE take a step back from it but nope looks like they will never learn.
It wouldn't surprise me if this game gets announced for mobile later.
When i saw that its not a single player game i was like…
I’m out. Getting sick of all these multiplayer games as a service *****.
Someone should press a big red button at Sony and prepare a XDEV Rescue Mission(s).
It looks embarrassingly awful, SE is on a roll with these early PS3 looking games 👏
I also refuse to believe it was Platinum's A team that made that thing I saw, I'm hoping it was a bunch of interns and the janitor.
Hopefully all the people complaining do not try and join the close Beta, so more of a chance my brother and I can get in.
Online Co-op made by Platinum. I’ll give it a try before making up my mind.
The singing / music was my favorite part! Very rough trailer and notable lack of sound effects, but I’ll reserve judgement. Everything Square showed was a different shade of soul-less from the “we have Marvel universe at home” Guardians of the Galaxy to the odd looking Souls game, but ultimately these games are meant to be played and not watched in trailers, so I give the benefit of the doubt to bad editors and await hands-on impressions.
Well, if it’s two player co-op I guess I can’t play it. Shame. But if it’s live service I wouldn’t really want to anyway I guess. How disappointing. I can see why all the negative reaction. They should have made the genre clear from the start.
I thought the trailer was okay, it's got unusual painted style graphics that a low quality steam didn't do any favours. BUT, then they said online co-op live service game. So no interest at all.
Too bad, I really respect platinum games. The last game I played from them was astral chain which is fantastic. Didn't finish the trailer as soon as I saw 4 coop dweebs aimlessly Roaming around. In this crowded E3 season too many games looked that way.
The main reason it's getting down voted in the live services part. Nearly every negative comment I read last night said this.
People are annoyed and rightfully so.
I didn't hate the singing or the voice overs, but I am put off by the co-op live service thing.
Already said this on the other article, but truly disappointed in Platinum Games.
I will not be buying this anymore, I hate live service games with a fiery passion.
Its almost as if they went out of their way to set expectations as low as possible. I can't believe how bad the trailer production was. At least the game its self can only be better than what they have shown this time out
I think people just expected too much from Platinum. They're not all that great IMO.
Its like the voices were ripped straight from the original Medievil.
Yeah I was already a little unsure about this one but once I heard Live Service I checked out fast. Plus the gameplay looked much worse than the previous trailer.
Is this the return of the infamous Platinum B team? Hopefully not. They've been on a roll lately.
My feeling is platinum are taking on too much work. They are at their best when they focus on one or two games at a time. At the moment they are spreading themselves too thin. If Bayonetta 3 doesn't show up this week, you have to assume thats in trouble too
I usually love anything P* touches but nope, I am good with waiting on Bayonetta 3 and hoping for an astral chain sequel.
I hope they aren’t spreading themselves too thin.
Visually, art style -wise, that looks worse than Astral Chain.
I don't want to be that guy, but it seems like Platinum loves making Nintendo games pop versus being contracted to make other games they may or may not be fully invested in. (Not including Nier Automata in that. That game was amazing!)
@Dragonsmana what a cool avatar you have there, may I ask where it comes from? 😃
@Octane "They're not all that great IMO."
Actually they are that great, maybe even better. Their fast, smooth and rewarding gameplay is second to nobody in the industry.
This game however looks like the worst thing they have put out, maybe it's just a god awful trailer and the actual game will be different.
I seem to have fewer problems with this demo than others, I think it looks good, despite the slightly aged vibe. The combat looks fluid enough and has a nice weight, if a little slower than their other, recent games. This is Platinum so the combat will be great and I do enjoy their output in general. What worries me is that it looks a little too generic and it being a live service. I hope they will reconsider that aspect after the outcry.
Wrap it up and put it on the switch and call it a day.
That trailer was terrible.
@clvr It is the helmet of the G rank (or Master Rank as it's known in Iceborne) Teosotra armor set!
Ah I see, I haven't played MH since Tri lol
have a good day/night!
There's definitely a difference between the footage shown at Sony's State of Play and this year's E3 trailer. I was ready for the State of Play version. Now, I'll be saving my money. Yuck lol
I remember when platinum said they're opening a studio for live service game back when they got the tencent money. Gonna assume that that studio has a buncha new less experienced guys doing this game while the veterans focus on bayo 3 and GG. I couldn't think of any other reason why this game looks so bad. Their mobile game looks way better than this
@nomither6 It gets even better. The director of Revengeance is the lead on this game!
@CrispyMango92 Damn that's heartbreaking , lol .
