Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will arrive on PlayStation 5 at some point in 2022. That's right, Ubisoft is adapting James Cameron's ridiculously expensive movie into a next-gen video game. At the time of writing, we don't really know what it'll entail — all we have to go on is the above CG trailer. Needless to say, it'll probably be a while until we see this thing in action.
Funnily enough, this announcement sparked a visit to the Push Square archives, where we found a review of Avatar: The Game for PS3, dated December 2009. Penned by editor Sammy Barker, we gave it a 5/10, declaring: "Avatar: The Game isn't bad, it just isn't that good either." Damning stuff.
Let's hope Frontiers of Pandora does a bit better!

I was interested in something like this around 15 years ago.
I'll always have a place in my heart for Avatar not for myself, but for my Dad, who loved it and was really looking forward to the sequels. I'll look forward to some actual gameplay.
Looks less impressive than the cross gen Horizon TFW
I would've been interested in an announcement like this around maybe 2010 or 2011 when it felt like Avatar was still a big thing
Spider-Man levels of hype this ain't
Thought it was the other one. There goes my excitement.
This makes me want to rewatch the movie honestly.
I have the film on Blu Ray already. Like the top commenter said if this was more than a decade ago sure but today? nah no thanks.
@Residentsteven I would be interested in seeing sequels to the movie but not interested in any game associated with it like this one.
I'd be more interested if this was something original and not Avatar.
I’m probably alone here but I loved the 2009 game. Sure, it was a bit rough around the edges but it captured the look and feel of the movie perfectly ...and offered fans a deeper, more ‘hands on’ view of the world Jim Cameron created.
I was a huge fan of the movie back then so having an opportunity to explore Pandora, riding Direhorse/Thanators/Banshees, controlling AMP suits and just learning more about the fauna and flora was awesome.
This new game just went straight to the top of my most anticipated games list 😬
How many times will it be delayed like the movie sequels? 😆
@JustAiko watch it, the movie is great. I know a lot of people hated on it back then because the story ‘isn’t original’ but it’s still a damn good movie. I think people will appreciate it more when the sequels come out.
It’s like how a lot of people hated on the Star Wars Prequels for years ...but then the Sequel trilogy happened (🤦) and more and more people are now starting to give the Prequels the appreciation they always deserved 😁
Are we sure it won't be cross gen in the future, and the current next-gen only is to create some hype?
@Bluetrain7
We'll just move this one under the 'indefinite' column in the excel spreadsheet, under Beyond Good and Evil 2 and Skull and Bones. 😁
I don't know about the movie itself but that looked pretty good, need to see some gameplay to see if it can match what I saw. I'm also glad that it's current gen and won't be held back by hardware that was already outdated on Nov 15, 2013.
Another generic ubi fill in the map collect-a-thon but with blue people this time incoming?
If it breaks the ubi formula I'll be interested. It's also not going to be a movie tie-in, so will stand more of a chance of being good and polished if they are sensible about it.
@fR_eeBritney You're right on "Avatar", but wrong on the "Star Wars"-prequels.
I mean it's a pretty cinematic trailer, but i am sure Ubisoft is gonna screw it up with repetitive gameplay and micro transactions.
So, it's not even worth getting intrigued.
Terrible idea lol
@Xenomorph_79 totally agree if this came out near the 2nd films release it would be way bigger deal
also same not just the same formula icons on a map please ubisoft something different please or is that all you can do?
@RubyCarbuncle There actually are sequels being planned, but they keep getting delayed/pushed back lol.
@rjejr Wrong Avatar franchise . This is the Avatar with the blue space aliens.
Alright, which one of you asked for this? No one?
Seriously though, I wonder how much they were paid by 20th Century to make this...
Trailer looks stunning, but I know this will end up being some open world bore fest as usual.
@peppermillian Yeah, people betting against Cameron again. You would've thought people would've learnt by now.
🙄
I'm up for this game. At least it'll be on PS5!
I love me a good open world game, can't only have linear experiences or online only games. It's almost as if some people expect every game ever released (even if they don't even plan on actually playing it!) to be tailored for their own specific tastes.
@Residentsteven Definitely not gonna compare the two movies, but Blade Runner got a sequel after, what 30 years? and everyone still cared as well as new fans.
The two movies couldn't be any more different, but the time it takes for a sequel to come out doesn't really matter, if it's good... it's good. The quality's all anyone cares about.
Avatar was bad and this will probably be bad.
@Residentsteven well, in that case, I suppose you never really cared about Avatar's sequels either. Seems to me, the delay is just an excuse for an indifferent crowd who didn't even like the first movie in the first place.
I have absolutely no interest left for this franchise. That might change with Avatar 2 but it has had its time and the sequels have taken too long to come out. I am more annoyed Cameron hasn't approved The Abyss and True Lies 4K transfers than anything else due to the Avatar delays 🤣
@KidBoruto Doesn't matter for memes. 😉
@BlaizeV impressive analysis
@Logonogo I've clearly missed my calling
