On its fifth anniversary, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has been played by over 37 million people. It’s important to note that these are not sales numbers: Naughty Dog is vague about how the figure is calculated, but the number will almost certainly include PS Plus downloads, pre-owned copies, and rentals. Nevertheless, it’s clearly an impressive number.
Back in 2019, the game had sold 16 million units, so we’d expect its sales numbers to be near or over 20 million units by now. It’s also certain to get a boost when the Uncharted movie releases next February – unless Sony has something new in store. Personally, we’d really appreciate a PS5 patch, as this title still looks incredible, but deserves to run at 60 frames-per-second.
We absolutely adored the exclusive when it first released in 2016, awarding it a 10/10 in a glowing review: “A fitting end for one of PlayStation's most famous franchises, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End sits alongside The Last of Us at the apex of cinematic action experiences. Naughty Dog's ability to tell engaging tales is unmatched, with Nate's final chapter expertly balancing bombast against genuinely relatable themes.”

They really need to patch more games. I shouldn't have to choose between 60FPS and 4k with Shadow of the Colossus, and any game that's been patched to have a max of 30FPS due to old performance issues should be patched to have a PS5 boost. I hope they'll try to remember the future with backward compat boosts with games now.
Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy at 4K/60fps would be golden.
I'd love to replay this game but I hope that some day ND releases a 4K/60fps patch for this game (and Lost Legacy and TLoU2) therefore I keep waiting
The Uncharted games are among the very few that I play again as soon as I've completed it...mate.
Mario games and MGS are just 2 others.
Rentals lol, yeah okay
This was my PS4 "launch game" since I got the UC4 bundle for Christmas 2016.
And a much better one than my PS3 "launch game", which was literally Lair.
For that one brief second, when my brain registered the thumbnail and first few words of the title, I thought you were gonna say theres a patch.
I mean im happy lots have played it but, everything was a letdown after that brief second.
@Jeevz Well, it would contribute to the number. I felt it was important to point out that the game hasn't sold 37 million copies, as that would be misleading.
@art_of_the_kill I had the special edition ps4 was beautiful. Aah lair should have been so cool that and haze were probs two of the biggest letdowns ever.
@get2sammyb Seems fair to assume someone, in that 37 mil, could have rented it to play. Not sure why you're getting such a hard time on that one.
Anyway wonder how many actually played it to completion. I've started each Uncharted but never liked any of them. Strange too because I bow to no one in my adoration for TLoU 1 and 2.
@zupertramp 39.1% of people completed it, according to the trophies. Not bad.
And yet it's my least favourite, bloated and drawn out, with only one major action sequence which was spoilt at e3 and nothing that hadn't been seen in the previous 3 games. Oh and a last boss that was a quick time event in the style of the last boss from The order 1886, complete damp squib. Even lost legacy was far more enjoyable and that was a much smaller budget release. Multiplayer was great though.
I think they are probably looking at PSN accounts that actually played the game and came up with those figures. People latching on to "rentals"
Overall, what a fantastic series of games.
Drake is one of the few likeable video games characters ever created.
Most of the rest are foul - mouthed , pain up the bollox divs.
I haven't, I did play the lost legacy DLC which was alright. Murder Death Kill
Some people are confused and it's pretty baffling. Is it really that strange that Naughty Dog could look and see 37M different PSN profiles played this game? They know the sales numbers as well, so they know the difference between those that played it and the sales numbers is, drum roll, all the ways people can play a game without buying it, which includes rentals, PS+, PS Now, borrowing a copy from a friend, the used market, and so on.
@get2sammyb man, I wish I could walk to a Blockbuster and rent some games.
Drake's Fortune is not the best in the series but it's probably still my favourite. So many classic 80's movie style lines.
@Matroska didn't think to check that. So roughly 14.5 million people have played and completed Uncharted 4. I actually have no reference for whether that's good or not but does sound like a lot of people.
@Daveuppercut Totally agree. It was also far too serious for its own good. Lost Legacy had the same lightness of touch that made the first three what they were. Not my words, Carol, the words of Top Gear magazine.
Great game and no 4 is my favourite of them all! ❤️
Best. Game. Ever.

I'm actually playing the first Uncharted again along with The Last of Us and honestly it's hard for me to come up with other games that match the level of enjoyment these games provide.
I wouldn't be against them doing more games in this series. Lost Legacy proved they can make compelling adventures without Drake (as if that was ever in doubt), and I vastly prefer the gameplay and style here to Last of Us.
I have all of these nice Naughty Dog games quietly waiting for game boost patch on my shelf
Having replayed 1-3 as part of the PS4 remaster package, I'm waiting patiently for PS5 patches for both UC4 and Lost Legacy. Surprised the latter hasn't been a PS+ title.
An incredible game. I was kind of sad while playing it knowing it was going to end 😂...
Absolutely love this series! I played the first one when I was 15 and completed the series in my early 20s. Beating 4 and playing through the prologue felt like I was shutting the door to my childhood.
U4 was a great game.
I agree, would love a 60 fps patch on PS5.
Amazing game and franchises word up son
2 and 4 are probably the best in the series, but the most memorable part for me in the series, is when Uncharted 1 turn into a horror game towards the end.
@HUMPERDOO
First of all, kudos for both the Alan Partridge top gear quote and the preacher avatar, secondly, I couldn't agree more with your take on the uncharted series.
@BrainHacker
At first I wasn't big on the supernatural slant but as the series went on I started to miss the variety it brought to the gameplay.
@Daveuppercut I agree. It adds variety to the enemies, instead of the normal goons in the game.
Brilliant game!
Love the series... played them all multiple times, including Golden Abyss (though that's not ND-made). Platinumed them all, the first 3 on PS3 originally and then again on PS4 in the Collection. My favourite series of games in 40+ years of gaming.
it really does need a 60fps patch at the very least (unless it breaks the game cause thats possible). honestly been on my xbox series way more lately just due to how good the BC is there. I come to the PS5 when I want to play something specific but broadly I go to the xbox. If sony works on this area, i'll probably be on my PS5 more.
uncharted 4 really was a great game though.
My personal favorite of the series and definitely in my top 10 PS4 games of the generation. I personally loved how they decided to tone down the action sequences a bit after U3 had really ratcheted up the crazy action sequences to the max and instead focused a bit more on exploration and character growth.
My only problem with it was the speed run trophy because playing Uncharted without stopping and smelling the roses every now and then just feels so wrong to me!
I have it... Yet to be among the numbers with the trophy list added to my profile. I completed the trilogy on ps3 years back so I am definitely going to play it one day.
Probably they are counting the total of PSN accounts that have unlocked at least one Trophy.
Uncharted 4 was good. Definitely not my favorite but a fun game. Uncharted 2 is still the pinnacle of the series for me personally.
Man I remember the hype for this game when it come out, I don't go to comment section of the internet and focus on finishing the game because fear of spoilers, a true 10/10 game. Truly the best (and last) great game by Naughty Dogs.
Geez. If that ain't a reason for Uncharted 5. I adore Uncharted 4. My favorite in the series. And my favorite series.
@ApostateMage
The original will always be my favorite, but Uncharted 4 comes in 2nd place for me, followed by 2, then 3.
@Korgon
I agree, I always thought Uncharted leaned to much into the action and not enough into the adventure. Uncharted 4 was a nice change of pace. I also like how they didn't include annoying supernatural enemies at the end.
Although, I fully expected the dead pirates to come to life at the end, and even though I'm glad they didn't, I won't lie and say I didn't secretly miss it. 😄
I clocked so many hours on Uncharted 4 multiplayer that at one point it was the only thing I would play. I adore ND multiplayer and wish TLOU 2 had something like the first game. It was a blast!
I gotta say, as a grown-ass man, I'm finding it harder and harder to play games that incorporate mature themes like honesty in adult relationships, ageing, etc., then ask you to blithely murder hundreds of people in the name of adventure and treasure. The dissonance just shoves me right out of the game. Tomb Raider has the same problem, but Uncharted 4 seems the most egregious example in my own recent playing history because of how it aims for these tender or emotionally complex moments while refusing to even acknowledge the international murder spree. That being said, I did quit about halfway through, so maybe it somehow comes up later? I doubt it. It's a shame, I thought the storytelling, the traversal, the puzzle-solving, the graphics were all top-notch. But these days I'll take a game like Doom, which doesn't pretend to be something it isn't, over the likes of "sophisticated" games like Uncharted 4, as slick and alluring as they are.
@Daveuppercut uncharted 4 is my favorite in the series. The pacing is great and the platforming and story has never been better. Maybe don't look at events like e3 if you want to go in blind. I did that and i'm glad. I was completely blown away. Way better final boss and main villian than any in the series. Lost legacy I felt brought nothing new to the table gameplay wise and that last fight didn't feel as well written as the one in 4.
@hypnotoad what games you play? I haven't come across any of those types of characters yet
@HUMPERDOO ain't nothing wrong with being serious instead of saying "funny" lines just for the heck of it lol
@MattSilverado this is the first one I played and I still was sad it was ending😂.
@BrainHacker it's silly though like why supernatural stuff lol
