Come on, SEGA. We know Sonic's all about going fast, but this teaser is taking the mickey. Sonic Team has announced it's working on a brand new entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise (there's a surprise), and it's done so with the above video. It's so brief, it's hard to really glean anything from it at all, other than Sonic's in it, and he got lost running in circles in the forest.
Seriously though, it looks like this will be the next major 3D platformer, so to be perfectly frank, expectations are starting pretty low. We're going to need to see a whole lot more if we're to have any confidence in the project, but we sincerely hope this one is a winner. We'll see in 2022, we suppose.

Sonic ...Zap? Sonic Zao? Sonic cool Wipeout federation logo?
Sonic Zap seems like the most likely title based on that symbol
That's be 5 years since the last Sonic title Sonic Team made.
Add on two new consoles to make it for and it may be Forces again. They spent 3 of that games 4 year dev cycle making the graphics engine...
This teaser felt like a teaser for the teaser
Like what was I supposed to get excited over
"There's a new Sonic game and Sonic's in it"
Thanks Sonic Team
The one thing I can hope for is that they actually put the long development time to good use, this will be a 5 year wait. I know Forces was a 4 year wait, but there's the whole new engine thing taking up much of that time, which isn't a factor here since it's cross gen. I'm still keeping expectations low, but still.
Hopefully they give it a bigger budget too, Forces was so low budget after all the money they lost from Boom, but both Mania and Forces sold well, so they can be a bit bolder with splashing the cash this time.
@Haruki_NLI I don't think the extra consoles will add that much to the development, Series X and PS5 ports are specifically very easy and quick to get up and running.
Not expecting much from this game from a visual and design perspective since it has to be able to run on the Switch as well
Imagine if other franchises got as many chances as the blue rodent had.
Meh. Can't say I'm too terribly interested in another Sonic game.
It looked like the old classic Sonic judging by his design, Generations 2 maybe?
@Orpheus79V So is the PS4, and Sonic Team still spent 3 out of 4 years making Hedgehog Engine 2, and then had the actual game part made by people who had never worked on Sonic before.
Its not whether or not the PS5 is easy to get the game running on. Its a matter of how much time and effort does Sonic Team want to spend tweaking how it looks to use the PS5's capabilities.
Why didn't they created a visual for Sonic similar to the one they made for the movie? The trees and grass looks realistic and Sonic looks so cartoony. I didn't understand that teaser.
Sonic seems like an excellent opportunity to make good use of the DualSense so hopefully some resources are allocated there.
@AdamNovice Nah it's definitely Modern Sonic. He has the longer legs and spikes.
@Haruki_NLI It'll likely just be the PS4 version at 4K with some basic Dualsense functions, they are still using the Switch as a baseline. And that comparison to the PS4 doesn't work because they were making that new engine like you say. They're gonna use the same engine, and porting a PS4 game to PS5 is not the same as building a new game engine in terms of time, effort and manpower.
@TheFrenchiestFry It’s a mix of the two. If you zoom in on Sonic before he boosts then he has the spikes and face of Modern Sonic but a shorter frame and stouter body like Classic Sonic.
A teaser doesn't work for Sonic. DQXII had a brief teaser but DQ games are typically amazing, so you think "what's this? A new DQ? It's gonna be great!" You see a Sonic teaser and it's more a case of "what's this? A new Sonic? It's gonna be a crime against humanity!" They need a proper, full trailer since they need to demonstrate how it won't be worthy of being immediately fired into the sun.
My reaction: Insert reaction here when there is something to react to.
@nessisonett Ok so Runners Sonic then
I think that's more or less how he looked in Forces as well. Stouter body but still retaining the modern traits
There are certain games from developers that can get away with small teasers that don't really tell much about the game. I don't think Sonic Team is among them lol. But hey here's hoping for the best!
@Orpheus79V They didn't need to upgrade from the initial Hedgehog Engine either but they did. It worked at 4k on PCs, did numerous art styles (Unleashed, Generations and Lost World) worked across multiple architectures. Heck many argue Unleashed visually is a more impressive game than Forces
Don't underestimate Sonic Teams stupidity.
Sonic Team is the last developer I want making a new Sonic game! Their track record isn’t great. They’ve not made a good game since Sonic 06!
I would play a sonic game again if it was a turn based rpg.
Other than that, maybe if it was Sonic and Eggman as Road Runner and Wile E Coyote, and it was like a puzzle game or something. To be honest I've not had any interest in Sonic for probably over 20 years.
Clearly this is Sonic adventure 3.
After Sonic Forces I don't expect much here.
It’s hard to get excited about Sonic games when there have not been many good ones lately. Or at all depending on your opinion.
It was disappointing. Theres literally nothing one can say about that.
They could at least have talked about the premise.
@AdamNovice You know... that was the one thing i noticed, but was difficult to say cause we don't have a good shot.
But, it did look like a Sonic more in the classic style than the taller with very long spikes we've had for a while. Maybe more in the style of the movie.
Alot of rumors going around this may be the Sonic Rangers game leaked way back in January.
@Bentleyma- Unleashed would like to see you now
