Late last week, it was rumoured that Square Enix has another "major" PlayStation 5 exclusive in the works from the Final Fantasy franchise. That's about as far as that claim went, but now Imran Khan of Fanbyte has shared further details on the project. This spin-off title is said to be called Final Fantasy Origin, and is being developed in collaboration with Nioh studio Team Ninja. The article also corroborates rumours that the game will play like Dark Souls and is set somewhere in the same world as the very first Final Fantasy title on the NES. An announcement is currently scheduled for E3 2021.
Khan then goes on to state that Square Enix plans to release an alpha demo this summer "to solicit feedback from the audience while the game is still in a fairly early state". It will operate a lot like the pre-release tests both Nioh titles got prior to launch, with Final Fantasy Origin's currently named Stranger in Paradise. The leak is at least partly sourced from assets and information that has been shared with gaming media ahead of the publisher's currently unannounced June showcase. "Expect the title to play similar to Nioh or other games in the genre, but to be more accessible for a wider audience", the article explains. On the Square Enix side of things, development is being led by those who made the fighting game Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.
How do you react to these latest claims? Would you be interested in a Final Fantasy game in the style of Nioh? Let us know in the comments below.

This franchise needs a break. Its turned into the Call of Duty of JRPGs.
Hm. I’m torn. This sort of thing would be great in a more interesting setting like the FFVI world. The setting of the first game though? It just isn’t particularly exciting.
@Ken_Kaniff Bit of an ironic statement given that Final Fantasy is releasing less games now than it ever has. I mean, VIII, IX and X were released in 3 years.
The titling makes it sound very "FF1 remake"-y but I definitely wasn't expecting this.
I wonder if it'll follow the Warriors of Light or if it's a new story in the FF1 world. Nioh is an action-RPG but also very different from what you'd expect out of one with the FF name.
@nessisonett Sorry if your offended, but this franchise has been bled to death.
This sounds cool! Definitely hoping to hear more.
very unexpected style for the game for sure.
@Ken_Kaniff It’s not about being offended but the series has been ‘on a break’ before, between 2016 and 2020. The series is factually not the same as Call of Duty which has yearly instalments. It might have been 20-25 years ago but then those games are some of the most critically acclaimed of all time so it clearly worked for them.
I may not be a huge fan of Souls games but I’m told Fallen Order was also one and I liked that. One in a FF world could be up my alley. I like this rumour.
Would love a soul-like with FF setting!
@Ken_Kaniff Disagree. Maybe you aren't paying attention to releases or something? Each FF game is its own self-contained story, world, and combat engine. FF14 went completely left-field and is an MMO you subscribe to and is critically acclaimed. FF15 is different from FF16 and of course, FF7R is focusing on the PS classic cast of Cloud and co. Call of Duty is generally the same gameplay loop tweaked EVERY year in a different setting. That's not at all what FF is. There are fans of just the MMO, just the SP experiences, just the older games, just the spin-offs like Tactics. They are milking the name only, so yeah completely disagree, as long as the quality is high, use the brand for whatever type of gameplay and setting you want. It's like saying Mario needs a break lol.
Interesting. I definitely didn't see a Soulslike Final Fantasy coming. It also is good to see Team Ninja leading development instead of Square proper so they are not stretching themselves too thin. I'm looking forward to seeing more as I do like the Nioh games quite a bit although I haven't finished 2 yet.
A Final Fantasy souls-like made by the Nioh team? SHOOT IT INTO MY VEINS!
Looking forward to see this. E3 suddenly became much more interesting.
Uhm, I don't know about this, but I hope it won't be as bad as Final Fantasy 13.
Much love for Final Fantasy and all, but it does need to take a chill pill for a couple years imo.
More Nioh is a good thing.
Yup FF that's souls/nioh...hit me and hit me hard please. I'm huge FF fan but it's average difficulty usually was my only problem.
So this is welcome. Also looks like this isn't taken resources from FF7Remake need part ASAP
Well, at least it isn’t set in the XIII universe. Seems like they keep experimenting to find a new battle system that’ll work for them... but all I want is something similar to the snes/ps1 games.
Final fantasy released one mainline game last gen and it needs a break? Yeah there were ports and a remake to bring some older games to new platforms but nothin excessive.
And as far as xiii goes I quite liked it, wish I could play it on modern hardware like a certain other brand can.
I want to be excited but it's just that, a rumor. A nioh like FF sounds absolutely fantastic though. The combat is extremely addictive and just because it would play like nioh, doesn't mean it has to come with that soulsborne difficulty
But I'd prefer an engaging challenge over something so easy like musou spin offs anyway. Hope it turns out true but not gonna hold my breath
Gonna all white mage this game just like the original.
Interesting. I'm curious to see how it'll be pulled off.
Let me guess, judging from that banner, F2P with gacha mehanics to play as your favorite FF heroes?
@Milktastrophe the photo above is for the game Dissidia Final Fantasy
Is someone in here really comparing the yearly micro-transaction toxic sweat fest looter shooter that is Call of Duty to an every 3-4 years in between games fantasy RPG Final Fantasy lol anyway... This sounds pretty interesting tbf, if there was ever a game to get me into Souls-Type it might just be Final Fantasy
I feel like I should be more excited for a game that's FF meets Nioh, but I kinda don't really care. Maybe seeing it in action will sell me on it, but I'm much more interested in seeing XVI or Remake 2 than this.
Maybe it's because that massively obnoxious Imran Khan is saying it, so that might just rub me the wrong way for petty reasons.
I've wanted Final Fantasy to return to something along the lines of a more traditional fantasy setting for a while. I thought what they showed us of XVI so far was brilliant in that regard, but if this is true it's flppin fantastic.
@Ken_Kaniff I dunno, I disagree with that. It's more similar to super mario IMO, in the sense that there's a whole bunch of different games and spinoff titles, and the series sees a few releases a year across a bunch of platforms but in general each title is its own unique thing. Some are great, a lot are just okay, but you never get the sense when playing any one of them that they've just copy/pasted the last title in the series and added some flair to make it seem different.
A Final Fantasy soulslike has me rolling my eyes a bit, but Nioh was a solid game. I'll be willing to give it a try
@Ken_Kaniff If anything is the CoD of JRPGs, it would be Tales of... but even that series took a break.
Every FF entry be it mainline or spinoff is so different from each other entry to the point where some fans complain about how much constant change there is compared to Dragon Quest. I wish CoD was like FF.
@nessisonett I feel exactly the same. As much as I love it (and it defined my childhood), the first Final Fantasy game had very little in the way of story and world building. So while I think I would enjoy it regardless, I also think they could have set it in a world that they had detailed more. FFVI? Give it to me!
@Steel76 I am still not entirely sure what "Souls-like" is outside of "Normal Action RPG with Difficulty Set to 11". Everyone talks about it like it's a separate genre of game. I only played the original, but they seem to be just Action RPG's that have a higher than normal difficulty curve. Am I missing something?
@nessisonett it’s not a case of them milking the franchise, it’s just pretty clear that they don’t know exactly what they are doing with it. But it’s been like that for almost 2 decades, and it could be worse. I just don’t think anyone would moan about fast sequels if they were as great as FF6-10.
@kyleforrester87 It’s been like that for longer to be honest. Both the SaGa and Mana series grew from Game Boy spin-offs of FF, same as Bravely Default last decade with 4 Heroes of Light on DS. There was that rubbish Mystic Quest too on SNES. It’s always been an odd series full of spin-offs but we’ve got XVI and VII Remake 2 coming out at some point, neither of which are exactly being rushed. So complaining now, of all times, just feels odd given the history of the series.
I can see the poll now....
Do you like the idea of a Final Fantasy Souls Game?
A. Whatever.
B. Whatever..
C. Whatever...
Final Fantasy Nioh? Definitely something I never would have thought I wanted until I heard of it.
@nessisonett just seems like they are forever throwing sh*t at the wall to see what sticks these days.
@kyleforrester87 Well not really. What have we really had this last generation? There’s XV, VII Remake, World of Final Fantasy and that rubbish Dissidia game. Not that much at all compared to previous generations. Not a Dirge of Cerberus in sight.
@nessisonett I’m not saying the content isn’t decent but it’s not hitting past highs. And, for example, FF15 isn’t just FF15, it’s the weird demo that came out with Type-0, the prequel movie, the strange DLC and additional content.
Ugh, why does everything have to be 'souls-like' now? I'm so freaking bored with it.
@kyleforrester87 Yeah, FFXV’s weird multi-format thing was a stupendously bad idea. But then the PS3 generation had Fabula Nova Crystallis, which probably trumps it in terms of sheer nonsense.
Interesting. We've had 3d remakes of 3, 4 and a modern remake of 7. I would be down to play a re-imagining of the original for sure. I have yet to play 1, 2 or 5. Briefly played 6, though.
N.i.c.e.im down with that.souls games are amazing.word up son
FF1-5 had that medieval theme, I would prefer something set in a FF6+ world, otherwise its just another souls game made by someone else.
Nowadays, Dragon Quest > Final Fantasy.
This could be amazing!
Oh. Great. Another Souls clone. Thank goodness, FF was really in danger of having a unique identity for a while there.
@nessisonett XV IS part of F.N.C. though. It's all it's own screwed-upness combined with the F.N.C. screwed-upness for one maximally screwed up product.
@NEStalgia XV wasn’t really. It was part of FNC when it was Versus XIII but the core themes and terminology were removed when it made the switch to XV. None of the nonsense bizarro terms that XIII introduced were carried over.
@nessisonett Officially it's still part of F.N.C. though. Yeah they stripped it so it no longer makes absolutely no sense with meaningless in-universe lingo the way XIII did, but it's technically still connected.
@nessisonett and all three games are masterpieces!
Honestly, I'm down for this. Would love to see a FF game in the style of Souls genre
@Ken_Kaniff What about Assassins Creed ?
I hope this rumor is false. Love FF, dislike Souls. I’d probably buy it knowing I dislike Souls games too.
If this turns out to be true I'm interested because of Team Ninja's involvement. Nioh is a great series and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is a really fun game. Certainly decent potential here.
Id expect this to be more accessible to a wider audience if it is a souls like - although with team ninja on board, you never know.
I'm a little surprised if true as i would have thought they were more likely to go down the monster hunter or musou route for a spin off - but i can see the potential here. Final fantasy has a rich lore of beasts they could bring into this.
lol
This sounds horrible, and totally on-brand for modern SE. Since they're going the Souls route with this, and XVI looks like an edgy medieval character action game, I guess I'll be waiting on FF7 Remake 2 for something resembling the franchise I fell in love with on the PSOne.
HYPE if real, I would love to play this! Which reminds me, I own Sekiro but have yet to try it out.
Surely at this point "Origin(s)" has to be on the list of banned words that you're not allowed to use as a suffix to your video game title.
A final fantasy game roguelike would be day one for me
@Ken_Kaniff You know most of the parts have nothing to do with each other and are just different games with different stories which most of the time are not connected.
Only FF10 has two parts, FF13 had 3 parts and FF15 had expansions. The rest of the games are their own games.
Hi there fellow gamers.
As a Final Fantasy fan since FFIV and a Souls fan since
Demon´s Souls, this could be either a awesome mix or
a terrible one.
I just hope it´s the former because FF needs to become that household name again. i believe it will eventualy.
I loved everything I saw from the FFXVI trailer in terms of combat, visuals and the medieval setting and we only saw one playable character. There is suposed to be other two, I think.
Also, the fact that might be called Origin, maybe going for the warriors of light storyline, it´s actualy pretty interesting.
Very curious to see what this game is all about.
Cheers, stay safe and happy gaming to us all
FF meets Dark Souls? Take my first born!
@Ken_Kaniff I'd agree if most final fantasy games DIDNT have completely different stories, casts, worlds, and now different combat systems. They're almost completely different games from one another especially the more recent games like 15, 7 remake, and I'm sure 16 will be different too
why has s-e allowed nomura to dictate the look and feel of ff for so damn long? ff xvi looks to be a step in the right direction — you know, back to the medievil inspired setting that was so prominent all the way up to ff vi. we all know this tecmo game will be a shameless musou cash grab so don't get excited. i really want to see a new ff game that features classic anno character designs and setting. that would be magical and exactly the kick in the ass this ip needs to remain relevent.
They had me at Team Ninja.
Nioh Is one of my favorite games. Letting Them make a game set in the FF world sounds great to me.
Hmmm no thank you,if they want to go back give me remake quality FF. Not hey let's try to get into Soul's via the FF name guy's. They want a Souls game make it its own series not in FF.
Reflecting more this is Sony still upset they missed the boat on Demon Souls. Hey Square we will pay you X to be our next Souls. Yet Square will be smarter and get a timed deal.
