You may never have heard of Xuan Yuan Sword, but the RPG series has been around for a whole 30 years in China, where it continues to be a pretty big deal. The Taiwanese-developed property combines Chinese myths and legends with historical settings, similar to what Nioh does with its Japanese backdrop.
Anyway, for the first time ever, the series is coming West on PlayStation. Xuan Yuan Sword 7 will release this summer for PS4, and the announcement trailer that we've embedded above should give you a decent idea of what to expect.

It's worth noting that the game launched on Steam last year, where it has 'mixed' reviews — primarily because it's quite a bit shorter than previous games, as far as we can tell (clocking in at around 20-25 hours rather than double or even triple that). Still, it sounds like a solid action RPG.
Do you know Xuan Yuan Sword? Are you tempted to check it out? Prepare for an adventure in the comments section below.

I’ve never heard of that series but wow, it honestly looks good!
The gameplay looks awesome. Here's hoping it reviews well.
Oh wow that looks Awesome!
Wished it had a dub.
“Anyway, for the first time ever, the series is coming West on PlayStation”
The Gate of Firmament is on Xbox since 2018 and I think might even be on PS4...
Edit: Just checked and yes the game has trophies on PS4 so it exists. I guess it’s not in the west though?
Reviews please!!!
Was just commenting about this. Played it on Steam. Solid story driven game. There is a Demo on Steam.
Glad it is getting a PS4 release.
Interesting. I'd never considered that there may be whole 30 year old series hiding in the world. I wonder if there are any hidden gems we in the West may have missed out on?
Hope it doesn't turn out as a mess like Sword and Fairy 6 (since both Xuan Yuan Sword and Sword and Fairy are from the same devs) considering how overly buggy and glitchy that game was at launch.
Also, from what I have read, the game suffer from pacing issues, as well as the combat suffer from button mashing issues, as you can spam a certain attack over and over again, making the enemy get stuck on a stunlock. Hopefully, they listened to the feedback and fixed some of the issues. From what I have read, the bosses were atleast good. Last i also checked, they kept adding new stuff like new bosses, minigames, and even an arena mode if you really don't csre much for the story and just want to duke out against waves of enemies.
Looks pretty cool. The Chinese gaming scene is starting to step up over in the west. There was that Monkey King game that Sony published, and Sword and Fairy 6.
@themightyant yeah it's funny to think there's so much we've yet to experience ourselves. Hopefully we get the older games later.
Now on the radar

Xuan Yuan Sword The Gate of Firmament had an asia english release. That is why they have english trophies. Great game.
I have the title already. Imported sometime last year .
But admittedly I havent even opened it yet.
Same publisher as Sword and Fairy 6 iirc, and I really liked that one.
I'll definitely try this.
Only 25 hours is a feature for me, not a flaw
@AndyKazama not just the same devs, I believe the sword and fairy series is a spin-off series of Xuan-Yuan sword and shares a lot of common elements with it.
The gate of firmament was also a spin-off (or more like a sequel to a mainline game) so this will still be the first English release of a mainline game.
Besides this as far as I know the only other game in the series to get a western release was Dream Of Mirror Online.
"Xuan-Yuan sword 7 Online" was apparently planned but has been cancelled...
The only chinese game i play in the west is dynasty warriors but i am getting black myth wukong so i might give this a try
Looks interesting. I'll be keeping my eyeball on it.
Spoiler: It's not great. The problem it's not about being short. But It feels like the whole game is just the tutorial. You are introduce to new mechanics/skills and then only to use it for few times at that instance. It never really open up & the credit already rolled.
Still, a step forward for Chinese RPG.
