Sony's next major PlayStation 5 exclusive is right around the corner. We've known about Returnal since its unveiling last summer, and we're now just a few weeks away from the latest effort from Housemarque. We've seen a fair amount of the sci-fi shooter, but if you're desperate for more, watch the latest HouseCast dev diary, embedded above.
The focus in the video is on the narrative, and how it's been intertwined with gameplay. There aren't any new story details to discover, but narrative director Gregory Louden touches on how the player will learn about the alien planet Atropos alongside Selene, as well as find out more about her past. It's certainly an interesting watch, and there are some new gameplay snippets that show off a little more of the frantic combat.
For more insight on the game's story and how it works alongside the game's rogue-lite structure, be sure to read our hands-off preview and interview with Housemarque.
Returnal finally arrives on PS5 on 30th April. We're pretty excited, but how about you? Are you ready to unravel the mysteries of Atropos? Escape the loop in the comments section below.

All aboard the hype train
This kind of preview is boring, where's the ghost of tsushima-like state of play for this game? Sony seems didn't care about this game.
@wiiware There already was a state of play for it, it’s just been a while...
https://youtu.be/5929rKazHbE
Im looking forward to the release date. The game looks very interesting.
can't wait for this one ! Bring it on!
and to all those who would like to complain about the price point.... don't bother we've all heard it before
@rumple1980 Agreed it's getting beyond tedious
@render That's just 3 minutes trailer, the ghost sop is 15 minutes walkthrought of the game features, detailing the game system like stealth, wind guide, and honorable/dishonorable battles.
The bloke on the right likes his caps.
I'm afraid this game doesn't do much for me.
I'm more looking forward to Death Loop and The Village.
I will play this one day. The longer I have to wait the greater chance something else will take my money 😐
@wiiware Yes fair point, I forgot that the GoT one was really detailed. That would be great if they did the same for this.
@velio84 "The game is not worth the price" comments incoming in 3...2...1..."
These comments trying to be preemptive in what other users might say but haven't yet are becoming the new "the game is not worth the price" comments except maybe more annoying...otherwise the game looks great and I can't wait to get it when it's cheaper 😌
@velio84 is this not a relevant complaint? I'd say it is, unless you like to pay over the top
70 sovs for a game in this current climate is ridiculous.
If Death Loop and The Village can churn out at 50 quid then so can Returnal.
@Juanalf it looks a decent game, but I like sci fi games anyway..
As for people trying to be funny by guessing what other posters are going to say about it...well that's just pathetic.
People are allowed opinions, and if it so happens to be about the price and a lot of people mention it, then there's definitely a valid justification for discussion
Will be skipping this one in favour of Deathloop.
The lack of proper marketing for this game is rather concerning for me. PS5 hasn't had any big exclusives since launch so you would have thought Sony would be pushing this game big time, yet they've done very little and the game is literally just over 3 weeks from release.
@hypnotoad it's a ridiculous price. And that's just the standard game, if you want the rest of the game then they'll sell it for another 10 and call it the gold edition.
No doubt people will pay this price and those that won't or can't afford it miss out.
It looks a really nice game on first impressions and the story line could be good, but the nagging thing IS THE PRICE, regardless of what anyone else says. Imo.
Even after multiple trailers, a spot at the Game Awards, a behind the scenes series, and a recent State of Play feature, I still don't feel like Sony has done the proper legwork getting the word out on this game. I can't quite put my finger on why.
@Steve30000 Exactly Steve.
This pandemic must've passed the devs by !
Way back when, I'd think nothing of buying an import Snes game for 120 quid but those days are gone.
I've got dependants and a f*ck off great mortgage now.
@velio84 - 70 quid for Ratchet and Clank is a pisstake too.
Any game at that price.
Looking forward to this when it hits the bargain bins. I Will be buying resi villiage and deathloop day one, at normal price though.
If sony want to make more money from their games, then they need a reasonable price point like £55 - £60 and just leave it there, with the odd £10 - £15 discount on sales twice a year. They'd make bank and keep most people happy.
I like tentacles.
I like monster's.
I like this!
@darksoul77
I like tentacles and monsters too.
Just not for 70 quid.
Looking forward to the release. I am renting it though- not buying it. The $70 price tag is a bit high. Especially as the DLC didn't really wow me personally.
@velio84 I always find it odd when a dev uses procedurally generated levels as some great feature ,it just slaps me as being lazy ,lacking imagination and added to artificially increase longevity, also something that is linked to indie/budget games ,so a budget feature at a premium price, it just looks like a 3rd person version of alienation to be honest but for 70 quid.
@velio84
Your choice if you want to pay 20 over the price of any other game, it's your money and I'm not going to argue how you spend it, just putting my point across.
You're also correct about ratchet and clank, that game is also overpriced imo, even though I will probably still buy it, but I am going to try to shop around to see if I can get a better price elsewhere.
Might just be me that thinks that these games are priced too high, but there's an awful lot on here who think the same.
Returnal still looks a good game, I hope it's reflected in the price, that's all.
@hypnotoad agree, any developer that wants that much is taking the **s*
This is looking rather interesting to me — for the first time. I'll wait for reviews and may grab it.
@velio84
I remember when there was another hyped up procedurally generated game by hello games.
That also looked great on the previews...
@velio84 what can they do to this game or any other, to make it worth £15 more than Tlou2 or GoT?
So happy I'm not poor and can afford $70 for a game
@jmac1686 I can afford 70 quid for a game but I refuse to pay it.
Also, the mrs would smack me around the head several times if I did.
@jmac1686 we're talking about $97 games here.
Oh wow...
If the same guy - he was also the Narrative Designer for CONTROL and Quantum Break.
I just got a lot more excited for this. A good narative, big part of what keeps me playing videogames.
Cool name gregory.best name ever.yeah this game will surprise a lot of people.housemarque never made a bad game and the winning streak continues .word up son
I just have a feeling that it will flop... hope that I'm wrong tho
I don’t understand the 70$ complaints for this game if the game is of high quality I don’t see no problem with the price. People need to understand that gaming is a expensive habit if you don’t have the money to feed this habit than you should find another habit to do in your free time.
@4kgk2 Most of the complaints aren't directly against this game but the £70/80€ price outside of the US in general. As it's mainly a UK website we're a bit miffed that we have to pay 95$+ for our games with a massive jump (25$) in new game prices compared to the minimal 10$ in the US.
@Old-Red you guys currency value and inflation value is different from the states that why you guys are paying more. I live in the states I rather pay 25$ more for games and have free Universal healthcare and college like you guys have in Europe then save 15$ on video games with no free universal healthcare and college like it is in the states.
@Agramonte His twitter account lists all those games in the bio so definitely the same guy (also Housemarque and Remedy are both Finnish studios so that makes a lot of sense). Nice, I didn't make that connection. I don't think he was the lead on those other games but this makes me feel even better about Returnal anyway.
@4kgk2 I mean... I'm not going to disagree with you that given the choice of universal healthcare or cheaper entertainment, I'd pick universal healthcare.
I was just explaining why people are complaining about the price of games this gen so much. Honestly, I don't think it will go away until there is a larger user base on PS5 and the prices can come back down to something close to reasonable. As someone who can afford £70, it's hit a point where I just cannot justify paying that much for a piece of entertainment, it's just not right.
It'll be interesting to see the reaction when they come back and say that they have to raise the US prices in parity with the rest of the world, cause it's only 'fair' or something like that.
From what I’ve seen, it feels like the narrative and the gameplay elements are solid. The piece that still concerns me is the technical side since I’m still seeing frame rate/pacing issues in this preview. I’ll still play day one thanks to GameFly. Otherwise I would wait for reviews.
I think the game looks great, managed to preorder it for £64. Am I happy about that, no(especially as that's 90 odd dollars). But I understand that these games today cost a lot more to make than they used to.
The average game when the ps3 launched in 2006 cost $60. Everyone has just got used to paying that, but it had to go up sometime. And with inflation that $60 cost to you back then would be more than 70.
Rd2 cost $370m to $540m with marketing costs. Rd1 cost $80-$100m.
The average game now apparently costs between $60-$100 million just to make.
The studios are bigger than ever, more staff making these games (minimum wage in 2000 £3.60, 2020 £8.91. And I'm sure these developers are on a lot more than that and scale accordingly.
The games are bigger, more detailed and take a lot more programming than ever before. (I'm not saying they're better though). That costs money.
But on the other side of the coin, they have to make sure that the quality is there, that your going to be getting value for money. That charging the extra for returnal is worth the money! We'll it be? Who knows till it comes out! I hope so. I think all these developers/studios are watching what happens with these $70 games. Will be interesting to see the sales for the game.
@Serialsid They're also selling more, plus making more money on micro-tran$actions and DLC, so that's not a valid point.
Check the proffits for these companies, they're larger and larger every single year. The "inflation/games cost more to make# excuse doesn't cut it, they're getting their money worth and then some.
Does anyone know when the review embargo lifts on this game? On one hand, I’m really excited for the game based on what we’ve seen of the story, but, on the other hand, I’m not 100% sold on the roguelike elements. Not usually a fan of the genre, though combat looks fun. This is the type of game that makes me miss PlayStation demo discs.
Hi there fellow gamers.
The game looks AWESOME.
Absolutely love the art style as well as the environmental storytelling they are trying with this game.
And the last gameplay snipet at the end of the video...... Fantastic. It really feels like Vanquish and Control on steroids and I love it.
Even Takahisa Taura, who is famous for is work in MGRising: Revengeance, Nier: Automata and being the director of Astral Chain, is completely sold. Returnal is actualy the reason why he is buying a PS5. The man as good taste.
It´s day one purchase for me as well.
Cheers, stay safe and happy gaming to us all
@Athrum returnal has no dlc or micro transactions that we know of, or R&C so it is a valid point. And returnals sales may not be in the many millions.
Yes I know that some of these companies are making big profits but the fact remains the big AAA games cost more to makeand take longer.
Everything else in life has gone up during the years but games have mostly stayed the same price for over 15 years. They were going to go up eventually.
@vapidwolf If it's done well with plenty of variety and a consistent logic guiding the generation I think it's actually more work than creating single worlds. Problem is it's not often done well and is, as you say, a lazy option.
I am interested in this game, but I only have 45Gb left on the SSD. What game shall I delete? Ugg, We need to be able to archive games to external SSD.
I have a data cap limit per month.
I will def buy at all 3rd party games for Xbox Series X in the future and Exclusives for the PS5. Lost sales for Sony.
This game looks pretty cool but I think those expecting a AAA level title are setting themselves up for disappointment.
No way in hell should this have been £70.
@jmac1686 Here in the UK the exchange rate makes it $98 per game.
I can afford that but refuse to.
Calling those that refuse poor is childish, I'd rather come off poor than a shill.
I believe this game will bring to the table a good kind of different. The difficulty curve will be the factor that will make or break the game. People associate difficulty with the roguelike genre, but I don't feel it will work very well with this game as it may break player engagement or even alienate the PS5 consumer base. We shall see, I can be wrong off course.
Day 1 purchase right here. Just ordered from PlayStation direct store. HouseMarque has put out some amazing games, Resogun was one of my top 5 ps4 games and my first platinum. Does it justify the 70 charge? That’s yet to be seen, but I’m happy to support this dev if it means they keep making games.
@hypnotoad I tend to agree. I’ll pay it, but it means I will most likely buy less games brand new, and that ultimately hurts Sony. Only getting the games I’m really hype for at launch.
This is one of the games in my wishlist, but I will wait for Sony to port this game on PC (if ever). Returnal is what a metroidvania game would look with AAA budget.
@Athrum What DLC in a Firstparty title singleplayer game?
@RaZieLDaNtE I dont own a PS5 yet but im supporting this title day one €70 or not i want my quality games. My favorite thing here is the complaints about the pricetag but most people will buy the seasonpass, gold edition, cardpacks because the game is only €59,99. I believe Pushsquare pushed hard too bury the game in negative press by hammering the price but priced NBA2K with the "free" mamba PS5 upgrade version.
@Flaming_Kaiser hmm but when you can get resi 8 for 45 quid on ps5 which is a multi million dollar game with hundreds of staff ,I dont understand why a company who is predominantly associated with short indie games and has 80 staff , has charged 70
@PossibLeigh I've never experienced a game that uses procedural regeneration of levels to good effect,I just find it annoying,make it hard by all means and ill learn the levels ,imagine demon souls if everytime you died everything was changed slightly ,ugh.
@Flaming_Kaiser Hi there friend.
For me it´s like this:
I see a game that I really like or know I´m going to either really like or even love playing and if I have the financial resources required to make that aquisition, I´m buying that game day one.
I don´t have to justify myself to anyone because I can see the value of my purchase.
But if I´m on the fence and dont really know if I´m going to like, then I just wait for a sale. Plain and simple.
And since I love everything I have seen so far of the game and because it´s a Housemarque game and a next gen PS5 tittle, that is going to use the systems characteristics and the awesome Dualsense, it´s a day one purchase for me.
No doubt about it.
Cheers, stay safe and have a good one
@Jarobusa Are there any SSD that are competable yet?
@Flaming_Kaiser Not yet, I have a SAmsungT7 external SSD (via USB) and it is a fast drive.
@Jarobusa Thanks for the info im sure its gonna break my bank account. 🤪
@vapidwolf Seemed to work okay for Remenant from what I hear. Didn't play it myself, too brown. Anyway, my point was to do it well is more work than not. But most instances of it being done well are classed as indie games. The decision to randomly generate rooms needs to be backed up by the rest of the game design.
@Flaming_Kaiser huh !!!?
All those price haters out there I think complain because let's be honest it doesn't look like like a top notch visual game, but who knows maybe the other aspects will make up for it.
3 weeks lets go!!
