Zombie Army 4: Dead War – one of the free PS Plus games for April 2021 – is getting a next-gen upgrade, which will see the title run at 60 frames-per-second in 4K resolution. Like many other games, the co-op undead-a-thon utilises dynamic resolution scaling, so it’s not always going to be native 2160p – but as developer Rebellion notes, any slight dips in image quality are designed to “ensure a smooth” framerate.
The game already included a 60 frames-per-second option on PS4 Pro, but it’s worth noting that it’ll retain the performance at a much higher resolution on PS5 once this update has been installed. The game runs at just 30 frames-per-second on PS4 in 1080p, so this is a major upgrade from base consoles.
This is a patch rather than a port, so it’s similar to what Insomniac Games did with Ratchet & Clank. Unfortunately, this does mean there’s a caveat: Xbox Series X will has the option to run the game at 120 frames-per-second in 1080p, while that feature is absent from Sony’s next-gen console. This is because, sadly, games need to be ported natively to PS5 in order to achieve 120 frames-per-second; it can’t be done through backwards compatibility.
Nevertheless, this is an awesome and timely update – especially with the game being available free on PS Plus this month. The patch is available to download now. Very nice! Why didn‘t they announce it with the announcement of the April‘s PS+ games though?
@Max_the_German Because it came with the announcement of the game coming to Game Pass - probably because more next-gen features are available on the Xbox side (as this article points out).
is it cross play?
@GamingFan4Lyf Thank you, that seems to be the reason. I just thought that Xbox One X already offered the 120 Hz mode (with real framerates below 120 fps), but this 120 Hz mode seems to be new.
I guess it’s understandable if the devs don’t want to provide a full port for PS5. It’s more work for them and hardly anybody in the world is running a PS5 with a screen capable of 120hz
120 hz gaming on a console is overrated as hell. There is no palpable difference compared to 60 hz, even digital foundry have to slow down their footage to half speed to visualize it. This is this generations unnecessary gimmick to sell new tv’s.
On a similar vein, the Bloodborne 60fps DIY chap said this in a tweet the other day regarding the Ratchet and Clank 60fps patch.
Apparently a recompile of the games old SDK is not required for 60fps boost.
So maybe it's not too tricky at all to boost the frame rate on PS5, and we will continue to see titles updated (including Bloodborne!!!).

Idk I feel like I already got my clunky co-op apocalypse shooter fix in with Remnant:FTA last month. Anyone with experience able to compare the two?
My TV doesnt support 120hz and, to be frank, i have zero interest in forking out for one that does.
@Chimhog If you install the game on an external hard drive u still can get 60fps in your game, the only issue you might have is loading times would slightly be longer.
@z0d15g0d Yes this game is cross play.
Playing games at 120hz on consoles isn't really great at all..... the amount of downgrades a game suffers because of it is just way too much. Maybe in the next consoles iterations that might be different, but not now.
I'm happy you can now play games at 60hz on consoles, that's all.
@TBubs311 totaly different..the only comparison is that they are both 3rd person..zombie army 4 is a lot more fun..
@Northern_munkey thanks for the input! I may actually give it a go then before my subscription expires
@Max_the_German why have 1 day of publicity when you can have 2?
@Futureshark I booted up Ratchet & Clank the other day to check out the patch, and noticed no difference, which was weird because 30 vs 60 is usually night and day.
@Deadhunter
Really, you sure you updated it? For me it felt super smooth!
Young Sammy also thought so, check the update information on the game menu.

I have a 120 hz TV playing cod at the moment on series x must say there is a pretty big difference dirt runs great too but I must admit if my tv hadn't broke I wouldn't run out to upgrade my tv haven't tried my ps5 on it yet . But I will say it looks no where as good as my oled tv that my ps5 on just not 120hz but the colours and pictures so so good
@kingtoten
Thanks dude.
@deathaxe
Quite a few actually.
My TV is a Sony 2019 model and can do 120hz in 1080p and 1440p over HDMI 2.0.
Unfortunately PS5 doesn't support 1440p output, so I have to drop to 1080p, but for multiplayer games that support it, I find it acceptable.
Series X can also take advantage of this, and can output at 1440p 120hz.
So in that sense, I don't feel an urgency to rush out and buy a new HDMI 2.1 TV any time soon.
@MemSec
You CAN tell a difference yes, but its so miniscule I can't be bothered
@PegasusActual93
Even if someone can tell the difference, there is no advantage in gameplay to it on console. Even on PC only esports pro’s may take advantage of it. On console with the controller input method... I can’t imagine.
Also just a heads up to anyone playing this game on a base PS4 now that its on plus there is an option in the menu to uncap the framerate and while i dont have a frame rate counter it feels like 60fps most of the time to me.
One of the benefits to slowed video game production over last year and this year is we're most likely getting a LOT more games patched to run 4K60 than we might have if it was "business as usual" and no pandemic. Sony and Microsoft know they have to make their consoles enticing to buy somehow and that seems to be a pretty good way to do it. Typically Sony aren't good with legacy (them killing the PSP/Vita/PS3 stores says that loud and clear) so the fact some of the previous gen good to great games are getting patched is a Very Good Thing Indeed. 60FPS can make such a big difference if it's stable enough.
Lot of people here saying they can see the difference between 60hz and 120hz and don't really care. I agree. To be honest upgrading to 4K from 1080p was the same for me - yeah I can tell but it's not the huge night-and-day difference going from SD to HD was.
The graphics and fidelity of this game are fantastic! One of the best PS PLUS games since launch of PS5
