Genshin Impact, the extremely successful action RPG from Chinese developer miHoYo, is out now on PlayStation 5. The free-to-play title released on PS4 last year, but the next-gen version boasts better performance and super fast load times.
We're certainly not Genshin Impact experts, but we do think that the game's worth a look for the sweet price of nothing. There's definitely fun to be had in exploring its open world and casting pretty magic spells without having to spend a penny.
The PS5 launch coincides with the game's latest update as well. Patch 1.5 adds a load of stuff to the experience, including new quests, areas, equipment, and enemies. Could be a good time to jump in if you haven't already, or if you've been waiting on the PS5 version.

Sadly I'm from America so it's still April 27th here, must wait 6 more hours until Midnight PST.
@KidBoruto it's just as well. The servers will be undergoing maintenance until at least 9pm. And by that point I'm usually getting ready for bed because I'm old and no fun anymore.
@KidBoruto If you have the Genshin Impact (PS4) version on your PS5, just go to the Genshin Impact (PS4) game tab, you should see the PS4 Free Upgrade on the right side above Trophies.
There's a platinum this time around. I hope it autopops, I can't play this game for another 100 hours to re-do everything. Maybe I'll do cleanup for any activities I didn't do the first time around.
Edit- they also added a ton of DLC lists to the PS4 version. My 100% is gonna drop to 30% unless things autopop. Rip...
@Milktastrophe How much money did you spend?
@ILikeStake $0. I just main the Traveler. The other characters I have are the free guaranteed ones. I never did any gacha pulls.
In the end the bottleneck became grinding Adventure EXP to unblock character and weapon ascension, but I had about a billion original resin earned from just playing the game and opening chests, so was able to do extra duns without spending money (dimensions? I forget what it's called). I don't feel like paying any money would've decreased the time to 100%.
Still no word on adding cross save support with PC and Mobile versions
@GamingVeteran @Enuo I'm in no hurry but thanks for your replies. Hopefully the PS5 version is easy to grab for me this Sunday (I work Wed-Sat and don't game on work nights)
I would pray this looks better than fenyx Rising on PS5? The game looks absolutely abysmal, especially after playing new Valhalla on PS5 for a few months
@Milktastrophe Ey yo That's awesome. That's the reason I didn't play the PS4 version past the Closed Alpha. Can't wait to get home from work to download the PS5 version. I really enjoyed this game.
Is this a game that requires co-operation with others or spending money to avoid frustration. Either would mean it’s a no go got me. Otherwise I’ll likely give it a go at some point (no problem “grinding” if it’s a reasonable amount and a fun task that I can do at my own lonely pace)
Edit: To answer my own questions: just checked, and it seems only one trophy requires co-op, which can be done yourself easily via phone or a PS4 if you still have it. So that’s that answered.
Also hear people say they’ve got 100% without needing to spend, so might download this tonight.
@thefourfoldroot Have not spent any money on the game at all since launch and yes can be 100% completed solo bar that one trophy which is easy to work around.
Had fun for awhile, but got a bit repetitive for me. I might jump in again after I complete God of War. It was either this or Warframe, but this is way more solo friendly than warframe.
Can you transfer over your save from PS4?
@Rob3008 It's like an MMO in the sense that the character/save is server side as opposed to stored locally. So log in and you'll carry on where you left off.
Might jump back into it again but admittedly my interest in MMOs and MMO type games has dwindled sharply.
@peppermillian Hmmm...I was just about to ask if you could start a new game. I played for maybe 5-10 hours at launch and then got distracted with other games, even though I was very impressed with it. I wanted to get the PS5 version and start fresh because I don't remember much of what happened. I hope they update with a "new game" option soon.
@thefourfoldroot I'd go a little further and say you are BETTER off spending no money and 'wishing' (gatcha) as infrequently as possible. The reason why is each additional character and weapon you get becomes additional work to upgrade once you have them.
If you resist the temptation to keep adding new characters and weapons to your roster you make the game less grindy, it's a vicious cycle, that can be reduced to a large extent by NOT wishing. It's still a grindy game if you want to max things, but honestly there's nothing in the main game that can't be accomplished with the default characters and weapons and without trying to minmax everything.
That said completionists who have to have 'everything' beware and steer well clear!
My recommendation would be to get to the point a few hours in where you can 'wish', you will get many for free by then. At that point spend your free wishes, just be happy with who you get, while some are better than others, everyone is viable. Then just concentrate on building a team around whichever main DPS you find most fun to play.
OR wait a few years until the game is almost complete (currently 2 of the planned 7 main areas are available). There's still plenty of content right now to get your teeth into.
Note: on the co-op trophy. You don't unlock co-op until AR16 which is around 12-20 hours in depending on how you play and you have to be the same World Level as the other player to join worlds, so do this as early as possible.
Yes you can get 100% without needing to spend. But it is a long road either way. There's one trophy "to complete Floor 12 of the Spiral Abyss" that basically requires a LOT of work and strategy. And a few others like treasure chest collection that, depending how you play, could be a joy or a chore. (I loved it, closest exploration feel to BotW)
All things considered it's an absolutely brilliant AAA class game let down by deliberate grind, the slow roll out of the main content (it takes a long time to make good content, and this game is potentially huge) and gatcha (which you can safely ignore with the right mindset).
This turned into a dissertation. Sorry, not sorry
@themightyant
No apology needed, that’s good new information. You’ve probably convinced me to wait a while, lol.
@thefourfoldroot Honestly, it's a great game. There is PLENTY to jump in on now. BUT if I had the choice to do-over, i'd wait.
Game currently feels in limbo while we wait for proper meaty new content and just get smaller filler content every 2 weeks. Community flip flops Love/Hate a bit like Destiny.
I've said if before that IF this game was released complete, without Gatcha and with less grind... or was made by Nintendo... it would be getting a lot of 9 or 10s across the board, it got several anyway, and even more GotY nominations than it already did. (It was both my #1 and #10 favourite game of 2020. There were better games, but I kept getting pulled back so it HAD to be part of the conversation... but slightly hating myself for it).
It really is a AAA game, don't let the F2P fool you. The monetary model also means it doesn't scrimp like most JRPGs, world, music, voice cast (in all languages) etc. really are all exemplary. I sadly don't see how the game could be made to the same scope in any other way, both possible due to F2P and held back by the necessary systems to get people to spend.
I think for good or not we'll see a lot more like this in the future. High budget AAA but F2P with simultaneous releases across mobile, consoles and PC designed to appeal to many in emerging markets as well as the west... all fuelled by Whales.
