The Game Developers Choice Awards are set to take place at the 2021 Game Developers Conference (commonly known as GDC) on the 21st July, and PlayStation's leading the way in terms of nominations. Both Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us: Part II are at the top of the pile, with six nominations each. Indie darling Hades (we're still holding out on a PlayStation port!) also has six nominations to its name.
It should be noted that nominations are decided by developers from throughout the industry, so this is pretty high praise for Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog. Both PS4 exclusives are up for Game of the Year, alongside the aforementioned Hades and VR hit Half Life: Alyx.
Here are the six awards that Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us: Part II are both nominated for:
- Best Audio
- Best Design
- Best Narrative
- Best Technology
- Best Visual Art
- Game of the Year
Fellow PS4 excusive Dreams is in the mix as well, with three nominations for Innovation, Best Technology, and Best VR/AR game. You can find a full list of every nominee over on the official GDC blog.

Tsushima definitely deserves best Visual Art. That game looks immaculate even just on PS4
I just recently beat TLOU2, definitely has the best tech I've seen in a game. Even something like blood decals are immaculate, the way the blood splatters, and streams down into a pool on the ground behind a corpse is next to immaculate. Very impressive stuff.
Art direction I'd give to Ghosts of Tsushima. It's really very breathtaking taking everything in. Also really impressive.
Don't think I'd give either best narrative though. I think Hades gets that hands down. Especially considering it's a roguelike, Hades is incredible on a narrative front. I was heavily invested.
Can’t believe there’s still awards left. Feels like that’s all we’ve been hearing about!
Regardless of who wins what, I had a great time with both games! Highly recommended!
So GDC has an awards show now? And they are awarding goty 2020 when 2021 is half over?
@BoldAndBrash Pretty much the opposite opinion for me, I think TLOU2 is massively overrated. Gameplay was solid as was worldbuilding, but I couldn't stand the story and characters. Kudos for taking a risk, but imo the risk failed hard.
Granted GoT is fairly generic, but TLOU2 was hardly innovative either. I don't really mind if a game isn't innovative, as long as it's quality. GoT's combat is extremely satisfying, and it made somewhat generic objectives fun. I thought the story was very well told as well, the setting/context were well used and the characters were all interesting.
And all of this is coming from someone who prefers more linear games.
Ghost has to walk away with all six surely 🤣
Both of these games deserve awards regardless of what people may think of them.
Since this is a largely British site, was TLOU2 received differently among the British than among us Americans?
Obviously, it is an incredibly divisive game, but some of the harshest good-faith criticism seems to be from British and Australian outlets, while American and Canadian outlets are much more likely to be very positive towards it.
Oh, we’re still talking about awards?
@patronmacabre Wasn’t the game pretty much universally well received by the press? I think I’ve seen one review that wasn’t in the 8-10 range. Gamers were a different story entirely (however I still believe most of the harshest criticism came from people who didn’t even play it).
👻 ghost of tshushima goty.word up son
And people wonder why Sony is focusing on these.
Gamers love playing them, and they are great at making them. Just more recognition on the mantel 👍
@BoldAndBrash I also think sushi is overrated 🤢! Good thing we have amazing games like Ghost of Tsushima with its great narrative, excellent combat and beautiful scenery! Wasn’t a huge fan of TLOU2. It had very good mechanics just not a fan of the story.
@patronmacabre pretty sure all game sites love it, it was fans that had the most negative comments about it. It was a good game but made some strange story choices.
@TheFrenchiestFry it doesn't
@FoxBot You have serious issues, LBGT people aren't some evil boogeymen out to get you, get help.
