We’ll let you decide whether a plot penned by the writer behind Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy VII Remake is a selling point, but Kazushige Nojima is the biggest name behind Astria Ascending – a new JRPG for PlayStation 5 and PS4, set to release later this year. “In a world where chaos looms, players take control of the Demigods – a motley crew of eight heroes charged with the fate of the world,” the press release reveals.
You’ll be exploring the world of Orcanon, “a richly imagined and fully animated 2D landscape with five cities and a dynamic weather system”. The art has been imagined by Akihiko Yoshida and Hideo Minaba of CyDesignation, while Final Fantasy XII’s Hitoshi Sakimoto is composing the score. “Work together to save the world, waging strategic turn-based battles using the innovative focus point system,” the blurb continues.
You can check out the announcement trailer above, which introduces the story and gameplay. The developer’s promising over 30 hours of gameplay here, with plenty of side-quests and mini-games to extend your adventure along the way.

I'm listening...
The VO needs work but the art style reminds me of Child of Light. This could be interesting.
I'd prefer a new FF Tactics game with the isometric turn based combat.
Sakimoto Is so recognizable! Valkyria Chronicles/FFXII soundtrack vibes...
Kazushige Nojima also wrote the original FFVII, not just Remake, just in case anyone's thinking "oh so he's the guy that took the story and just added pointless time ghosts everywhere." Anyway, this could be good but I really don't like that more modern, lazy way of animating characters not by drawing different frames (i.e. actual animation) but by having different shapes and just sliding them around like a kind of flat paper puppet.
This looks promising. And I love Ff7’s story.
That said, I think X is where the stories in the games took a turn for the worse and never looked back. I know there are a ton of people who hold that game in high esteem, so I’m expecting hate, but it’s, like, just my opinion, man.
Looks good, the character movement is a bit robotic but the design and environment looks great
The battles look good, but i don't like the 2d walking nonsense. I've still got ffIX to get on with for my jrpg itch.
@Matroska Don’t worry, I know to blame Nomura for that 😉
Not keen on it being a side scroller frankly, but I’ll give it a go. I’m much more looking forward to Fantasian (Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu), even if it is an Apple Arcade game!
Anything that starts with "in a world" always reminds me of Swedish dicks on netflix
@3Above i was thinking the same thing! Reminds me alot of child of light. Could be good, im curious for the reviews when it comes out.
... and from the advert straight to game pass again.. Sony needs to do something about this, and quick smart!
Physical please #### digital i dont give a toss about plus or gamepass.
I am sold on it. The art looks great, music is going to be on point.
Looking forward to more news on this 😃
