That Nintendo Switch and its selection of games sure are hot products right now, aren't they? Titles exclusive to the system make up almost half of the latest UK sales chart as gaming purchases across the nation increase by 33% under lockdown. That leaves PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games feeling like their sole purpose is to make up the numbers, with the best a title available on either system can do being Just Dance 2021 in third. And even then, almost 90% of those physical purchases were for the Switch version.
As a result of this Nintendo dominance, FIFA 21 slips two places to fourth while Assassin's Creed Valhalla drops one spot in fifth. Everybody's favourite game Grand Theft Auto V moves up to eighth and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is all the way down in tenth — that's quite literally all we have to discuss this week. Nintendo really is on top as the UK enters another phase of complete lockdown, and it doesn't look like any major releases will come along to shake things up until Hitman 3.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 9th January 2021
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Just Dance 2021
- FIFA 21
- Assassin's Creed Valhalla
- Ring Fit Adventure
- Minecraft (Switch)
- Grand Theft Auto V
- New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Slow weekend....how 'bout another poll?
Until more PS5s are out this will probably be the norm. Ive held off on buying new games so i can play them on PS5 when i get my hands on one
lol Only 1 game on the list I will even play so list mean ***** to me !
How in the world are these games still on the carts? Is this just an UK thing? I own a PS5, PS4 and a Switch and as much as I like my Switch there isn’t much new to play on it.
Surely there can't be many people left who hasn't bought either Mario Kart or GTA5 by now.
Well, this shows Nintendo probably did really well for Switch sales over Christmas. Maybe due to it actually being in stock or maybe because with all the lockdowns parents chose a toy that would keep their children entertained.
So much quality PS5 games, like Demon's Souks and Spiderman, and apart from Nintendo games, the UK charts are made up of generic 3rd party games like Just Dance, Fifa and Assassin's Creed.
Looking forward to a mostly generic new gen as well then I imagine.
if sony don't manage to double ps5 sales per week will be in serious trouble..
Even with more PS5 consoles in the wild I think PS5 game sales will be lower due to the price point. More people will wait for sales apart from the yearly update games where people would probably still buy them if they increased the price more.
Seeing those GTA especially GTAV comparisons to Cyberpunk 2077 vids on YouTube, further emphasizes why R* are the Kings of openworld and why it's still selling and why 97s are usually their default score on MC. CDPR would really have to go back to the drawing board and overhaul CP2077 for the PS5. It needs more physics and better AI.
@Wormold And a big chunk of their 1st party games are ports to save on development costs.
@JapaneseSonic Its been that way for awhile. Not just since Christmas. Animal Crossing and Mario Kart have been near the top pretty much all year. MK is over 3 years old. It was good but not like that. Maybe what this shows is people keep buying the console but has to purchase old game as there isn’t much big budget games coming out for it.
Makes me want to buy GTA V again lol
In a better world, Crash 4 would be seller what New Super Mario Bros Deluxe is. Such an overlooked game.
I am not sure why it is still selling well when even the Switch has many platformers that are better than it like Mario Maker 2.
@Steel76 I don’t have it nor do I want it. Played some of 4 and couldn’t get into it.
