Star Wars is of course one of media's most enduring, and most beloved, franchises. With such a history, it makes sense that it contains an enormous number of characters, from Luke Skywalker to those little Porgs from The Last Jedi. The LEGO Star Wars games have always contained a large roster of playable heroes and villains, but with this year's The Skywalker Saga, it seems TT Games is taking things to the next level.
New information in the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine has it that the game will feature 800 characters, 300 of which will be playable. That's got to be some sort of record, right? The game covers all nine of the main motion pictures, so you'll be playing as everyone from Qui-Gon Jinn to Kylo Ren.
However, you won't have to play through the saga in a set order. The game is non-linear, allowing you to take on quests in an order of your choosing. It's also open world, and will feature 28 locations to find and explore. It's sounding pretty huge, then.
There's no firm release date yet, but the latest official word is Spring 2021, so it shouldn't be too much further away. Are you excited to play LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga on PlayStation 5 and PS4? Whip out those lightsabers in the comments section below.

I want to play as Grogu.
Gonk Droid better be back.
@Wormold The Last Jedi wasn’t perfect but it’s the only movie in the sequel trilogy I can rewatch. I just can’t entertain JJ’s fan service flicks.
But it’s Lego so I’m sure it will be fun no matter what.
@fR_eeBritney Force Awakening, in my opinion, was the only "decent" one. You're entitled to your own opinion though.
@Wormold they can't make that rubbish any worse.
This game sounds ambitious. I hope they take the time to finish it before its released.
@fR_eeBritney the alternative script by Colin Trevorrow was so much better than the mess JJ made of The Last Jedi.
The only decent Disney film has been Rogue One.
Controversial opinion. Its too many. Characters just become reskins of others after a while - particularly obscure droids etc.
Hopefully they implement a better character select system this time as its historically been a nightmare finding the character you want - particularly in split screen mode, and particularly as the character roster has swollen with each new release.
@Wormold You mean the only decent film from the trilogy where they tried to expand the universe, try new things and have actual character development? It's not perfect but at least it wasn't painful fan-service.
Have great memories of playing Original Trilogy on PS2 and the brilliant PSP version. Bought and played Complete Saga on PS3 (why no PSP/Vita version?)
Of course I'll get this one!
Hope this is good. My worry is the Lego games have become more and more bloated with unneccessary open world filler. Lego Movie 2 was a misstep for me as they made it far too complicated for my little one despite him clearing plenty of Lego games previous.
@Hyperluminal Just read an overview of Trevorrow’s script for episode 9 and it would have been SO much better. It was a mistake to change course so drastically after the backlash towards episode 8. I know there are a lot of people who didn’t like The Last Jedi but there are still a lot of people who did.
I really enjoyed Rogue One but the kids think it’s boring 🙄 except for that 60 second scene at the end with you know who.
Shame to read it has an open world. To me, the best Lego games are the ones that bring in more focus in the overworld. The compact level-select world of Lego Pirates of the Caribbean is still by far my favourite; the LotR and Hobbit-parts just drag on too much.
Preordered this for the ps5 for £38 great deal imo, excited for this I am 😊
insert Ps5 version being held back because Ps4 version here
@LiamCroft Since it's specifically the Skywalker Saga, you're either gonna be disappointed, or gonna have to wait for the inevitable Season Pass which'll add in levels based on The Clone Wars, Solo, Rebels, Rogue One and The Mandalorian (in other words, it's where they'll shove the good stuff).
They've confirmed that Yaddle will be playable, though, so you'll have at least two diminutive frogs to choose from!
Nothing that has the new trilogy can be good since it doesn’t even have a single new good character and let’s not even talk about a story
@RogerRoger I know he won't be in it. But I want to play as Grogu!
@LiamCroft Given the impact he's had on the franchise, I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time!
But still, fingers crossed for that Season Pass!
The Skywalker Saga ends with RotJ and i already have all the lego games of those movies. The Last Jedi sucked so much i don't even recognise the sequel trilogy as cannon. When five minutes of a tv show create more hype and goodwill than a whole trilogy of movies, you know something went badly wrong. Hopefully Favreau and Filoni will use The Mandalorian and the world between worlds to retcon it out of existence. What Ryan Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy have done to SW is a travesty.
@fR_eeBritney Rogue One was arguably the only good SW film made under Disney. The main problems with the sequels is that they allowed different directors with completely different visions to alternate the directing. Additionally, there was no script, there was no plan. They just wrote it on a film-by-film basis, partially based on the reaction of the audience. George Lucas already had concrete ideas about the prequel trilogy before he started filming A New Hope. The sequels as a whole were just a mess, and I only find TFA midly enjoyable, but that's mostly because it's a reskin of ANH. JJ was passionate about SW, but he had no idea what he was doing. Rian Johnson on the other hand didn't care about the franchise, but wanted to leave his mark on the franchise. Neither was a success in my opinion.
The other only truly good show to come out of Disney so far is The Mandalorian, and that's mostly thanks to Filoni and Favreau. And it shows, because the Rian Johnson's trilogy is all but cancelled, and they're going full in on the series. Disney+ will also have played a role in that I'm sure. But the coming years we will mostly see Clone Wars and OG trilogy related series coming out of Disney.
I also fully expect Kennedy to step down in the coming year and be replaced by someone else. Maybe even Filoni.
Really looking forward to this.
@nessisonett You should be able to play from start to finish with Gonk only!
Since everyone's dropping opinions, I personally loved The Last Jedi and Rogue One, liked Force Awakens and Solo and hated Rise of Skywalker. I also love Mando and Rebels. Resistance sucked. The main problem with the sequel trilogy is that they didn't have a basic map in place. Everything was reactionary. VII was too derivative so VIII went in a lot of unexpected directions. Then there was backlash from some of the community, so IX erased a lot of what VIII had built. There wasn't a single satisfying character arc. I wish Filoni and Favreau had been in charge of the whole thing from the word go. As far as this game is concerned, I'm really looking forward to it and wish they'd throw out a release date.
Very excited to get this. Loved the other LEGO Star Wars game.
Everyone is hating on the Disney movies as if the prequel trilogy and special editions weren't so bad that they caused the sale of Lucasfilm in the first place... Star Wars movies have been disappointing people since 1997, but they'll all work fine in LEGO form.
@Deadhunter
I was about to say exactly the same, my feelings are pretty much in line with yours. I consider Dave Filoni to be George Lucas "literary heir", he understands what makes Star Wars special to so many people and how it resonates on human levels.
I think JJ got visually and structurally or essential the superficial of why people like Star Wars; Force Awakens was more a "Greatest Hits" album by the best Cover Band.
I like The Last Jedi relatively for what it did, with what it was given. I feel that a lot of anger is directed at Rian Johnson, but it should be more disappointment aimed at Kathleen Kennedy for her consistently poor, reactive choices at Lucasfilm.
She's a bad Captain of the ship, it's not because of the "SJW" stuff she's accused of, it's simply because she's like a GM that keeps hiring bad Head Coaches and firing them.
Eventually, it's surely the person doing the hiring and firing that's the problem.
@fR_eeBritney from what I’ve read it wasn’t necessarily the backlash but the fact the Trevorrow wouldn’t bend the knee to KKs anti Luke agenda. I don’t know if his script would have turned into a good movie, it sounded a bit dark, but the main problem with the trilogy is its lack of cohesion. No movie is going anywhere, no character has a journey, and that all comes from the leadership.
@Octane kk won’t step down, she decided if she can’t destroy Star Wars from a sequel perspective she’ll get out ahead and do it with the high republic.
The irony of all this is she was hired by Lucas to try and keep Star Wars on track after he sold it to Disney.
But do you have to play Negotiations before being able to access the rest of the films?
@Robinsad Eh. We'll see. What's wrong with the High Republic though?
Whenever I hear fans talk about why they like Star Wars, or what they like like, I always tend to agree with the positives.
When I hear about why they preferred x over y, I can usually agree to disagree, or agree, but usually respect the logical reasoning.
I sigh when I hear about how something is bad because Kathleen Kennedy has a cabal of black female lesbian writers locked away in a groupthink bubble. How they are toiling away trying to emasculate white male role models for some grand SJWoke Agenda or whatever, I just think I'm dealing with the fandom branch of QAnon.
Maybe she's just simply not very good.
I really hope they'll make the stupidity of Luke being butchered and Rey being overpowered as funny as possible. Oh and give us the old way of no voice acting at least as an option.
But I cannot wait. I've been playing through the older lego games to get ready for this and oh man some have not aged well. From team mates being unable to kill enemies unless you do it yourself to constantly respawning enemies that get in the way when you are trying to throw items. It gradually all got better but it started out not so well.
But hey, this looks very promising and could well be the perfect lego game. I have the Han in carbonite steelbook preordered and will definitely book the day off work to play it.
Hopefully the next one will be lego mcu the infinity saga. Lego avengers was good but it's not even half the story. A game featuring all films leading up to the end of phase 3 would be legend, wait for it...
Here's hoping for all the troopers from the 501st and the 212th.
@RPE83 Don't listen to those people. There are enough reasons to not like something without opening that can of worms. The sequels were just one big missed opportunity; regardless of who wrote it.
@RPE83 I get what you are saying, but all you have to do is see the picture of Luke with his face crossed out in the background of interviews to realise they had an agenda.
Personally no issue with the diversity of the characters in the new films. Rey could have been something really special. Seeing the number of little girls dressed up as her in Disney World was heartwarming. But they did her and the rest of the characters a disservice by not giving the character development and story arcs they needed. So yes she is bad, but pushing Agendas over storyline and thinking that is enough is a big reason why. Thinking the best way to escalate your own characters is by destroying established ones is another reason.
Loved: Star Wars (A New Hope), Empire, Return
Liked a lot: Mandalorian
Liked: Last Jedi, Force Awakens, Rogue One
Meh: Phantom Menace, Revenge of the Sith, Solo
Disliked: Rise of Skywalker
Really disliked: Attack of the Clones
As for Lego games — I don't really find them interesting. If the gameplay loop were to be different, I'd potentially be very interested in this game.
@Octane
Totally agree, it's more of making the point to why if anyone says the Mandalorian and Cobra Kai treat nostalgia characters well in a superior/preferable way, I can usually think about it and embrace the argument, agree or disagree. It's positive analysis applying theory to media. I love that.
The more people try and go the negative way and guess at Palpatine esque grand conspiracy machinations from Kathleen Kennedy, mentally it's harder for me to get on board with the royal you.
Same with the gaming version of The Last Jedi that shall remain nameless, haha.
@Robinsad
I still think and have to have faith that promoting diversity is a good thing, it's just been badly executed. As you say, the issue was Finn spent two films chasing Rey yelling "Rey!" basically.
I mean more it's easier and simpler to objectively look at actions, rather than speculate about motives. Especially if that speculation is making people angry; anger leads to hate, and all that!
@RPE83 I think I know where @Robinsad is coming from. But I think to a degree they were more focused on having a diverse cast than having actual good characters. Star Wars isn't the only franchise to have this problem. Just look at Batwoman (arguably a worse example), it seems like they were so focused on having a LGTBQ POC character as the lead that they actually forgot to write a good story.
This isn't inherent to having a diverse cast though, you can have both. It's just that so many big Hollywood films use a diverse cast as some kind of tokenism, rather than actually having a diverse cast just because it happens to be a diverse cast, in a more natural way, if that makes any sense.
I don't think the sequel trilogy was that bad in that regard by the way, but just a more general observation of the entertainment media.
It just sucks that all of it has become a political game. I've even read that some want to write Gina out of the Mandalorian. And even though I don't agree with her opinions, it doesn't mean I want to see her gone because of it. You can't have it both ways it seems..!
@RPE83 Regarding the future of the franchise, I think this experimental stuff they do with the series is a lot more fun. And it hurts less to have a bad episode in a series, than to have a bad film in general, so this is a safe approach.
And I also pre-ordered the High Republic books, so hopefully those will also be good. Along with something like Jedi Fallen Order 2, and I think Star Wars is back on track.
@Octane
Thank you, you are eloquenting the point I am trying to make, in a better way. I actually totally agree. The Good Place for example had a diverse cast, but the characters are all so so good because they have actual characteristics and feel slightly exaggerated humans.
For the record, I loved Force Awakens, The Last Jedi (although both flawed in places) and was stung by Rise of Skywalker.
Excited for all the upcoming shows too!
@RPE83 Yeah, there's only good things to come! Boba Fett, Mando s3, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka; can't wait!
This might be my most anticipated title. Step aside huge vampire lady with big hands!
@Octane the Ahsoka episode of The Mandalorian was SO good. I wish they had used her in the sequel trilogy. She’s one of my favourite characters in the SW Universe.
@fR_eeBritney She would've been quite old in the sequel trilogy..!
But she's getting her own series, so that's even better.
