The tech heads over at Digital Foundry have taken the time to examine Ghost of Tsushima on PS5. The PS4 exclusive doesn't have a full 'upgrade' on Sony's current-gen system, but a relatively simple performance boost gives it a serious edge, as detailed in the video that we've embedded above.
Putting the game through its paces on PS5, Digital Foundry reports that Ghost of Tsushima sticks to a buttery smooth 60 frames-per-second pretty much without fail. This is compared to the title being capped at 30 frames-per-second on PS4 and PS4 Pro.
Perhaps the most interesting part of this is that the game didn't receive a specific PS5 update. Instead, the title just detects that it's running on a PS5 and unlocks the frame-rate automatically, taking advantage of the console's additional power.
As such, the game's graphics options stay the same even if you're playing on PS5, offering a choice between frame-rate and resolution. However, as Digital Foundry points out, utilising the frame-rate mode on PS5 is a waste of time, as the resolution mode gives you a rock solid 60fps anyway, complete with a much sharper image.
Having said all that, Digital Foundry does dig a little deeper into what a full PS5 upgrade could do for the game. Indeed, aside from the frame-rate boost, this is still the same game that can be played on PS4 — nothing else has changed. It'll be interesting to see whether Ghost of Tsushima ever gets a proper remaster. We certainly wouldn't be against it, given how incredible the game looks to begin with.

The most beautiful game of all time (in my humble opinion) now looks even better. Sucker Punch deserve all the praise in the world.
Played it on PS5. I can hand on heart say I've spent many of the hours playing the game in photo mode agonising over the perfect pic because everywhere I went was stunning.
Is ghost really good or generic but good coz lou2 bad...I have only played AC4 and hated it. Is it just like AC or worth buying?
Thanks for responses in advance.
@L3GTRIGA
Oh look you done it now you mention a game. Incoming 150 comments how its bad -eyeroll-
Apart from BotW, I've never really fully enjoyed an open-world game I think. I didn't like Zero Dawn, AC games bore me to tears, Days Gone looked pretty but only featured idiotic characters, Death Stranding had unique gamplay but featured cutscenes that went on endlessly.. Will probably give this a go eventually because I can't help myself but will no doubt end up disappointed again!
I only tested it on frame rate mode on ps5. How much sharper is the resolution mode in general?
It's a very pretty game, open world games at their best are the reason I'm into gaming.
If you're sitting on the fence then get off it, it's well worth your time.
I saw it being played at 60FPS and didn't like it (I completed the game myself before I got my PS5). Go to the snowy area and see how unnatural everything looks. I kinda like the blurry picture on PS4...
I still need to try it on my PS5. Got the platinum on PS4 about a week or so before the PS5 was out.
The particles on multiplayer look so crisp at 4k60.
Finally I was able to install the game and unlock the Playstation skins!
@L3GTRIGA I utterly love TLOU II and I'm having an absolute blast with Ghost of Tsushima right now. It's one of the better recent "Ubisoft-ish" Open World I'd say. The combat is really great, the map is absolutely gorgeous. I'm 2/3 done with it and I'd say that it starts getting a bit repetitive by the mid point because I've pretty much unlocked everything I can and enemy variety is kinda low but the story gets more interesting and I'm still fully invested in seeing it through. I'm enjoying it a lot more than HZD or Days Gone if that can help.
@TechaNinja It's a locked 1800p at 60fps so it is quite alot sharper than the "framerate" mode that is locked at 1080p and they're both running at 60fps so there is no need for the Framerate mode on PS5.
It runs beautifully on the PS5.
This was my 4th platinum (on Monday) since I got the PS5 (6th platinum I've ever got). And it's a phenomenal game combat wise (completed it on lethal). I've started legends mode yesterday and even that is surprisingly fun.
One thing I didn't like however is the camera placement, no lock on and can get covered by terrain so it can get you killed.
Why not the same for TLOU2?
I wish Sony would create a team or incentivise all it's studios to do this and just unlock the framerate if detecting running on a PS5.
We know that both God of War & Last Guardian originally had unlocked framerates before being patched to locked 30fps.
Surely wouldn't take much to do, both GoT and Days Gone have now received this treatment.
Anyone know best way to nag those in charge to get this done?
@KPraj what are your other platinums? I only really started paying any attention to trophies in the last 12 months and so far have two platinums: God of War and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.
I wish I'd got the platinum for Bloodborne, but I don't have the will to go back to it again after not having played it for so long (and a big backlog of other games to play).
PS4: InFamous second son, DBZ: Kakarot - I rarely played my PS4 towards the end.
PS5: Astros Playroom, Bugsnax, AC Valhalla (long ass one - 143 hours) , GoT
Beautiful looking game that was a great swan song for the PS4 console!
I hope other ps4 exclusive like uncharted 4, horizon zd, and death stranding get 60 fps patch too 😃
@L3GTRIGA personally, it’s one of my favourite games ever. I could write an essay on why I love it so.
Objectively, you’re looking at an open world island that slowly opens up in three parts as you progress the story. Missions are split up into tales:
Jin’s story (main missions)
Character specific tales (focus on supporting characters)
Tales of Tsushima (side missions)
Mythic tales (supernatural stories where you acquire special gear)
Combat is timing based with dodges and parry’s taking precedent. You acquire many tools (various bombs, shurikens) and can approach things head on or take a stealthy approach.
You will fight a lot of enemies, traverse on horseback, duel bosses, write haikus, reflect in hot springs, climb shrines, and flesh out light RPG build options (ranged, stealth...) for your character. The world is stunningly beautiful. It took me 101 hours to platinum, which I almost entirely did before finishing the story.
If that sounds up your alley, you will probably enjoy it. Have a good one!
@wiiware Only 1 of those games is a PS4 exclusive though.
Can confirm. I started Ghost on PS4 but had to put it to one side for other stuff. Picked it back up on PS5 and it looks gorgeous and plays like a dream. Fantastic game. I still need to mop up a bunch of side missions to get the Plat, but yes, very enjoyable, and definitely at its best on PS5.
@Dr_ENT there was a rumor that a ps5 update is coming for last of us 2 and is being worked on atm.
Nice to know i dont have to run performance mode.
@twitchtvpat Best Buy accidentally showed a listing for LOU2 upgrade for PS5. Buy why? Why would I purchase it again? Naughty Dog should release a patch and do the same as SP & Bend did with their respective recent releases.
Nice. This is definitely my next game on the PS5. Really looking forward to it. Cheers
@Dr_ENT i haven't seen anything that says you need to buy or rebuy anything. all they are doing is working on upgrades for ps5 for last of us 2 is what i said
.
@L3GTRIGA it’s what AC should have evolved to by now. The game mechanics and combat are so fluid and that it’d be criminal not to recommend playing it.
@finalstan Sorry but are you playing a completely different game? The snow looks great in GOT and the game is certainly not "blurry" - it outputs @ a beautiful crisp 4k HDR on Pro and 1080p on the legacy machine. If it looks blurry then perhaps it's your TV that's the issue...
@Dr_ENT Sony will no doubt pack in the multiplayer with the PS5 release of TLOU Part II. A different team at Naughty Dog were working on it and they said it would be released separately (than the PS4 version). This won't be free, remember the remaster of Part 1 was released full price for PS4 - Ideally they could do a pack with a new remaster of Part 1 with all the bells and whistles PS5 could bring to it!
@Profondo Each to their own. I said I like the blurriness on PS4, of course it's crisp on PS5 - too crisp, is what I am trying to say. The person playing the game I was witnessing shared my feelings. We are a minority, I am aware.
@finalstan Eh? It was beautifully crisp on PS4. You gain absolutely nothing playing backwards-compat on the PS5 that adds anything visually, all that's changed is the fps. So if you and your friend are seeing anything different it's collectively false. There is NO visual upgrade for this game on PS5!
@Profondo Maybe you’d actually like to watch that DF video.
@FatHedgehog Perhaps you'd like to watch it again? A direct quote from the DF video:
"Beyond unlocking framerate, PS5 looks essentially like PS4. No improvement to resolution either. We're still at 1800p chequerboard. Level of detail, texture quality, it's all the same. This is a pure performance increase but a profound one"
So @finalstan (and his friend) are seeing increases in resolution on PS5 that aren't there (and Digital Foundry confirmed this in the above video). And now your claiming I should watch the DF video which actually CONFIRMS what I've been saying to finalstan all along?! 😳
@Donjuanton @Jimmer-jammer @Katsuhono Thanks for responses...I will get it for my birthday along with Miles 😁
@L3GTRIGA are you saying the only video games you’ve played are those ones?
@Arnna No, why did you think so?
@L3GTRIGA I have only played AC4 and hated it
What does AC have to do with anything? This sentence implies you’ve only played this game. And possibly TLOU2 which bad apparently.
this is just part of your mostly incomprehensible comment. Maybe we need the Rosetta Stone.
@L3GTRIGA Highly subjective but I'd say buy it..its great.
