If you’re not familiar with Startopia – and, honestly, we’ll forgive you for that – then all you really need to know is that it was a 2001 strategy title helmed by ex-Bullfrog staffers. In it, your job was to oversee the creation of a space station, and it fused city building mechanics with RTS gameplay. Now it’s set to make a comeback on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 from 26th March.
Spacebase Startopia is a new game being built by Dungeons developer Realmforge Studios, but it promises to strike “a careful balance between nostalgia and innovation in its reimagining of the popular strategy game”. You’ll need to delicately oversee three different decks and a “melting pot” of life-forms, ensuring you cater to the needs and requirements of each individual.
The press release explains: “In Spacebase Startopia, players will carve out their own little space in the universe, ready to become a galactic utopia – if your management skills are up to the task. With three different game modes and a vast amount of management decisions to be made under the watchful eye of the VAL, the station’s sardonic AI, there’s plenty of in-depth gameplay waiting for new and seasoned players alike.”
In addition to a full single player campaign spanning 10 “fully-voiced” missions, there’s also competitive and co-operative multiplayer for up to four people. And of course, there’ll be a “fully configurable” sandbox mode for you faff about in, where you’ll be able to explore the full “potential of your space base”.

Isn't a management game at odds with a Utopian society? By definition its meant to be a post-scarcity civilisation, why do I have to manage resources, no one should be wanting for anything! 🤔😁
The original Startopia was terrific and Two Point Hospital proved that these games can work brilliantly on a console, so hopefully Realmforge will pull it off.
I've had the original on my Steam for years. Don't think I've played it though. Got it in a Square Enix humble bundle.
I hope this is set in the same universe as Portal, otherwise that VAL seems a bit of a rip-off.
Sounds fun. I'd buy for $20. So ill wait for the sale
Am surprised that Two-Point Studios are not the ones who are doing this. These guys were the original developers to the original.
Looks fun, this genre is having a great resurgence of late.
Those quotes in the video made me laugh though, were they really the best they had?!
You know what I wish? I wish someone would re-make Alpha Centauri.
@LordSteev There is spiritual successor to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and its called Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth. You should check it out.
@LaytonPuzzle27
Thank you, I will! Not sure how I missed that one.
@LordSteev Your very welcome.
