Cyberpunk 2077’s boxed sales in the UK couldn’t best FIFA 21’s debut, meaning the anticipated CD Projekt RED role-playing game will end the year as the second-biggest launch of 2020. In terms of physical sales, the game sold best by far on the PlayStation 4, accounting for 60 per cent of the sales. Of course, the release will have posted big numbers on digital storefronts as well, which aren’t tracked here.
In terms of the British best-sellers list this week, most titles posted a decline, with the all-important Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales period wrapping up. Immortals Fenyx Rising – which didn’t exactly light up the charts at launch last week – fell 45 per cent week-over-week, from 11th position to 17th position. Elsewhere, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales continued to mill around the top ten, this time in eighth place.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 12th December 2020

- Assassin's Creed: Valhalla
- FIFA 21
- Just Dance 2021

I wonder if we will see a massive decline in sales from here after word has spread of how bad it performs on base PS4 and XB1?
PS4 accounting for 60% of the sales.
This should end the chuckleheaded theory that they should have skipped this generation and focused on next.
They were banking on this money the whole time.
@LordSteev Isn’t the whole argument that yes, CDPR released an unfinished PS4 version for precisely the reason that they would get more money despite making for a worse game? If anything, this gives weight to that argument.
I guess people like bug filled games then ?
@DonJorginho I doubt it.
@Gaming365247 every game has bugs.
@nessisonett
Not sure I follow you here. The game always HAD to release on PS4, otherwise where were the sales going to come from? 60% of ALL sales were PS4. How many more were Xbox 1? If they didn't release on current gen consoles, probably 90% of the opening sales would have been lost.
@LordSteev Not sure if it's just your wording or you misread the article. It's only UK sales in the article. I doubt it was a 90/10 split in the UK for Sony.
In fact 60% of all sales were not on PS4 and 90% of sales were not on last gen consoles. In fact PC sold more than all consoles combined.

Where else would they get sales? Wait until they actually finished developing the game for current gen consoles next year/2022 and release it then.
@nessisonett I think what Steev is trying to say is the argument of skipping the past gen altogether is unrealistic. They had to release on the PS4 so they could make the money needed after such an extensive development cycle. Now the timing is still suspect. Should they have delayed it until they could have it running better on PS4? Depends on your perspective. Are you a shareholder or gamer is the question.
I wonder how many people will get refunds. I don't imagine a huge number, but I honestly hope everyone really disappointed will get one. I also hope sales drop like a rock. It should not have been released.
@Menchi
This article says PHYSICAL sales, I see after re-reading. And the link you reference is for PRE sales, not day one. Sure, it's U.K., but that has to give at least a reasonable starting point for sales elsewhere.
@ILikeStake
Yes, this is what I meant.
@LordSteev Again, your wording was all over the place so it was confusing.
@LordSteev as far as I know it sold best on PC digitally, and it actually has a physical PC version (even though it doesn't include any discs or other physical media, just a download code and some printed goodies). And then some of those last-gen versions were bought by new console owners (where it runs more or less fine). So it's very far from being 90% sales on last-gen consoles.
That said, it's probably still a lot.
@Menchi
I thought it was pretty simple to understand, myself.
Shame about immortals, would like the series to continue, great game and premise
@Voltan fair points, all. The thing I'm responding to is the idea many were spewing that they never should have released it on ps4. It's easy to tell by the simplicity of the geometry in the buildings that this was always intended to release on ps4. What i'm saying is that they should have waited until it was in better shape before releasing it, not abandon current gen altogether.
I am personally waiting to buy a PS5, which will then allow me to buy the PS5 non-backwards compatible version of the game.
That said, if I had a capable PC, that would be my first choice on were to buy and play the game.
Besides the bugs I'm very worried about the RPG aspects. Some people are saying it is worse than Witcher 3's and that the choices don't matter much.
The game will keep selling because even though it's a mess on last-gen consoles it's still a very good game on PC/next-gen. Costs of development/marketing were covered on launch day, so it will make a handsome profit even with it's imperfections. The core of the game is great, it's just the bugs that hold it back. I'm sure CDPR will patch out the bugs but this will take some time.
@Nepp67 I remember a few weeks back people were pressuring CDPR to release the game no matter what, they even sent death threats to the devs at the company. I'm not saying that it's entirely their fault but there was so much pressure on this game to release by December that it was too much pressure and they had to release it in this state. I'm sure that after they fix all of the technical problems they will come arpund to actually balancing the gameplay. You can't expect them to work on balancing right now when the game is this broken currently.
@DeshawnDex That's not the point I'm talking about here and I even mention "Besides the bugs." I'm talking about the RPG aspects and apparently it is worse and choices don't matter much from what I am hearing. I am hoping I am wrong but I don't know.
So much future CEX stock!
@LordSteev The argument is about how it runs so badly not that it wouldn't sell.
i ended up buying the game twice in PS4 Pro (unplayable) and in Google stadia (which is awesome so far)
refund policy for ps store is ridiculous... !!!
Brilliant for Valhalla. Thought I would stop playing after Cyberpunk came out but it has held my attention. 2 amazing boss fight in a row. Game is fantastic.
Not surprised with Fenyx Rising failure. Demo was mediocre. For $60 people will just get Valhalla. Needs to be $29 max
Loving Cyberpunk 2077 also. Base PS4 can’t run it - Use Stadia or GeforceNOW.
@fabisputza00 I got a refund after a 5 min conversation from PS US so you might have just got unlucky, I'd try again if I was you.
@Agramonte Immortals is actually pretty fantastic and its a shame Ubi sent it out to die, great mix of AC and BotW.
@LordSteev i understood exactly what you were saying...not really difficult to comprehend.
@DonJorginho
Considering mass refunds are already occurring, it's an obvious sure bet
@daveofduncan
Not sure I follow your point. And what?
So did it sell best on ps4 before, it after half those sales were refunded?
Cdpr has earned 505, thq Activision levels of mistrust after this. Yes, they'll make bank screwing their customers. Because that's how it works.
I've been playing CP77 on PC, and so far I've only had a single crash and no bugs. It seems to run well on my laptop. 10875/2080s. PS5 should easily outgun my laptop so I expect as people migrate it will perform well. And TW3 was buggy on console at release, but CDPR will keep working on the game to improve performance.
Glad to see MM still hanging in there Great game and Miles is way better then Peter Parker IMO.
Although no where near as good looking as MM, Cyberpunk is fantastic I can't stop playing it, there is a lot to get your head around but once it clicks it is very addictive. Played around 10/12 hours had 2 crashes but no losses (auto quick saves a lot). It is running well on PS5 b/c for me.
CDPR officially acknowledged the PS4/X1 problems and are offering refunds, as well as announced another hotfix coming within 7 days and 2 big patches in January and February. No word on next-gen updates yet.
@Northern_munkey Yep I also understood exactly what @Lordsteev meant. I don't know why anybody would find it confusing. They needed that base console sales and for the record the game was always marketed for said hardware. It was just outright silly to see people suggest it should've skipped these consoles. Watching videos i don't see what's so groundbreaking that couldn't have run without all these bugs. RDRII runs fine, CDPR just didn't take consoles seriously!
CDPR have also asked for patience while they fix the game.
But this is where this culture leads us. Gamers and journalists have defended all sorts of poor business practices. From monetisation, preorders, preorder bonuses, timed exclusives, lazy ports, GAAS, fix post release, etc, they've also attacked any one that may criticise these things.
But CDPR said they covered costs in the preorder phase. They have released a dodgy product. And they, and others, will do it again, because despite the bad press they are getting, they've made money.
@Voltan Is PC classed as current gen or last gen? I find it amusing when people say a game should be played on PC or saying PC is the only way to play. Spent £1000 building my PC a while ago now and there is no way my PC would be classed as current gen. Wouldn't be surprised if it couldn't even run Cyberpunk. And I won't be spending another £1000 either to get it running or £2000 to play how it's meant to be played!
Immortals over here keeps being advertised for Stadia and I wonder if that's affecting it cos realistically how many are playing on Stadia anyway?
@DeshawnDex I'm willing to bet that a not insignificant percentage of the people who are big enough jerks to send death threats to a developer for a delay are actually some of the SAME people now complaining about the bugs and demanding refunds.
That said, I'm in the camp that would rather wait for a game that plays well than get a buggy game sooner. That's why I didn't preorder, just in case - and it's why I'll hold onto my money until I hear you can get through a complete playthrough without the game crashing on you. That doesn't seem like an unreasonably high bar to set, does it?
@LordSteev
It's not a chucklehead argument. CDPR is taking a calculated risk that it will make bank while only taking a short-term hit to reputation. People are pissed though, the gamble may very well not payoff.
@StonyKL True - PC is both the best AND the most expensive way to play (assuming you can find the high-end video card that would offer the best experience, it sounds like they're at least as rare as PS5s right now, if not rarer). $500 (US) seemed like a lot for a console for me, but that wouldn't cover the high-end video cards some people are comparing to the PS5 (and you still need a motherboard, CPU, RAM, storage...)
The power of Hype. I never had any interest in the game, but seeing the poor state this launched in on PS4 reminds me of From Software's 'actual gameplay' of Dark Souls 2 prior to lauch. I rushed out and bought that one at launch on PS3 to find a game that didn't come close, I wouldn't make the same mistake twice.
As bad as this release has been I still feel it will be fine in the end. I'm waiting until everything is cleaned up and updated for PS5, and will probably buy for half the price. When I get round to it it'll probably be the best game I've ever played. I'm just hoping CDPR are planning to put in a proper shift on this post release to get their reputation back on track, otherwise they could go the way of Bethesda if they aren't careful.
