The Last of Us: Part II has picked up another accolade – well, eight of them to be precise. Naughty Dog’s sublime sequel netted PS4 Game of the Year in the community voted PS Blog poll, and this year an eye-watering 2.5 million votes were cast in total. That’s a quite phenomenal statistic really, and a new record for the official website.
To be honest, it’d be more efficient for us to talk about the awards The Last of Us: Part II didn’t win, but first let’s roll off Naughty Dog’s list of accolades:
- Best Narrative
- Best Accessibility Features
- Best Graphical Showcase
- Best Soundtrack
- Best Sound Design
- Gaming Moment of the Year
- PS4 Game of the Year
- Studio of the Year
So, what’s left? Well, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales picked up PS5 Game of the Year and Best New Character, while Fall Guys swooped in with Best Indie Game. Star Wars: Squadrons won Best PSVR Experience, while Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 grinded out Best Sports Game. Ghost of Tsushima won Best Art Direction, while Call of Duty: Warzone infiltrated Best Multiplayer.
You can view the full list of winners – including all of the runners-up – through here. Just so you know, our own Game of the Year coverage will be getting underway in under a week, so keep an eye out for that.

Congrats to Naughty Dog! Really looking forward to what they bring next to the PS5. Hoping they make Savage Starlight before closing out The Last of Us trilogy.
And here...we...go!
😉
Easily the best game this year for me.
Great for TLOU2 and a fantastic year for PlayStation owners.
Just finished it, I didn't like it but the overall quality is amazing.
Good for them, just like the Golden Joysticks. Interesting that there wasn’t the same campaign from 4Chan to win this one for GoT!
Imo the best game that Sony has ever made. Fully deserving of all the accolades it gets.
I Hope They Give This Game As Well As Uncharted 4 And Lost Legacy a PS5 Patch.
Waiting for the salt...
@Areus Yep same here and hopefully Horizon Zero Dawn as well.
Congrats to the team. Very suprised that Miles Morales won best ps5 game. Demon souls really deserves that title.
@Col_McCafferty @Areus I find it surprising how little games have received a PS5 patch. I would have thought the PS+ Collection games would be the first ones to get a patch.
Interesting that TLOU2 has been voted GOTY twice now by the public. Perhaps it's detractors are merely a loud, vocal minority? 🤔
Wow I’m surprised, maybe this game is good, I just am not interested in it. First one was fine but zombies in general are just so over done. I have a hard time believing it could be better than Ghost of Tsushima but what do I know!
@Areus Here's hoping. Been wanting to play again but holding out for that, I'm half assuming it must be coming along with the promised multiplayer.
I did boot up ghost of tsushima earlier this evening though, looks so nice!
Congrats to Naughty Dog! I’m genuinely curious to see what they do with the upcoming full blown multiplayer release. Factions has great potential. I’m hoping for a co-op campaign or some form of co-op settlement building (similar to Conan) mode along with the usual multiplayer offerings. If they’re truly treating this as a full blown multiplayer game, I’m expecting some exciting and meaningful content. Can’t wait!
I love/ hate this game but more so disappointed in their lack of support (so far) with post launch updates or optimizations. There’s no reason a Game of the Year winner should be running 1440p/30fps on my PS5
I really enjoyed it but it does seem odd that for a gaming blog only one of those awards is for anything specifically game-related. I'm definitely a story/experience kind of person but at the same it does seem off that out of all those awards but game of the year, it could be talking about a film. Not really a TLOU2 comment as much as a gaming industry thing.
Well deserved and not surprising when actual people that played the game vote.
Very small percentage of people dislike it, if you look at amazon reviews over 80% of verified purchase reviews are 5 stars.
Glad to have finished this masterpiece 2 times already. And it still didn't get easier the 2nd time, that's the charm, as in the difficult moments and difficulty of enemies like Bloaters and the Rat King. Deserves all the awards at least to make up for Uncharted 4 losing to pfft Overwatch in 2016.
Inb4thecrying
More rewards for the best game of the year.
@Oriion but they're not zombies - they're mushroom people
j/k
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L ngl, I voted Abby
Naughty dog got their game on. Uncharted 5 going to be next level in terms of production quality. Still need to play this on hard mode.
@Voltan As did I. She was awesome.
Speaking of best characters though what happened to that Best Characters of the Generation thread? Seems to have died a death unless I have accidentally put it on Ignore.
I know people will be agitated with this result. But then again Dragons Age Inquisition won 6 years ago and that was the worst game I have ever played.
It wins best narrative? If this is the best sony games could do for narrative, well I don't have much hope for sony 1st party games story now
@3MonthBeef I mean that rather than level design, controls, gameplay, UI, challenge, system design, replayability and other gaming-specific things we have music, visuals, story, and other things that could be from the Oscars. Almost every single category ignores entrants as games specifically.
@wiiware
Keep crying
@themcnoisy Man you're crazy. It's a good game, really good at times. If that's the worst game you have ever played then boy do you have high standards!
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L hmm new character? He was in Spider-Man though.
Anyway I haven't played MM, plan to at some stage in 2021. I'm more inclined to at Spidey again but include the DLCs second time round. They any good?
Not my GOTY, but still a great game and I'm happy for everyone cheering for this game.
Well im going too get a SSD in my pro and play the Firstparty library again the PS5 will have too wait a little longer.
@Col_McCafferty The DLC's are pretty much more of the same but they're fine. Only thing I didn't like were the Screwball challenges (which are like the Taskmaster challenges but with an extremely annoying character behind them )
Congrats to ND.
I personally disagree that it's the best game this year, but it's undoubtedly a peculiar experience that tries a few new things, and clearly it resonated with a lot of people.
Funny though that everyone is talking about those pesky moaners but there's none to be found 😉
But it starred a lesbian and a muscly woman?! How could it be good?!
I thought it was a really amazing game that pushed the video game medium forward. It's not the only one that did that, but it's well deserving of it's praise.
@Voltan I think I met her in the main story and yeah, she was irritating!
@Oriion You are correct in your assertion Ghost of Tsushima is better than TLOU 2. The story just didn't have the punch as the original and gameplay was stale. I played the original TLOU and the entire Uncharted library and everything just seems recycled. Ghost of Tsushima was like this Ubi Soft open world style game done the right away and it was just fun to play.
I actually finished it yesterday. This game looks, runs, plays and sounds like a dream, even if it's a horrible dream filled with mushroom filled humans who are slightly more aggressive than the ones around us with the pandemic.
Damm thats alot of votes. Wasn't my personal game of the year but can appreciate why it won.
Favorite character and Abby gets 3rd? Thought people loved her lol
Maybe I’m thinking of a different poll but I’m pretty sure it was this one. GOT was winning by 4% with only a few hours to go in the voting process. If I’m right and this is that poll, it would have been impossible for TLOU to catch up. Did Sony decide differently? Was it not just fans voting? Just confused not angry. GOT was the better game but TLOU was good also.
TLOU II was definitely my game of the year, very happy to see Ghost of Tsushima right behind it in most categories as I'll start playing it this week end ! Amazing year for Playstation all around.
Well deserved and a worthy winner.
@Col_McCafferty I've got really low standards. In fact I will take that back. It was the second worst game I have ever played after Mass Effect Andromeda.
@themcnoisy Not a BioWare fan then.
I can't say I've ever played a game that I've outright hated and vast majority I always finish. RiME was and exception, I liked it until I didn't and then stopped altogether. Shadow of the Colossus was another one, hated the controls. Not saying neither are good games but they weren't for me.
It's worthy of some awards like best audio, sound design and accessibility, but nowhere near all of them. Narrative: absolutely not, it's nothing compared to that of the first game's, has a terrible structure, is full of contrivances, characters act stupidly and are unlikable, and the pacing makes it go on for far too long.
Second place for best art direction is way too high. Sure the game did have good art direction, but pales in comparison to Crash 4, Doom Eternal and Dreams.
How on earth does it get best soundtrack over Doom Eternal!? I can't remember a single original song from TLOU2.
For best final showdown, I'm assuming that means the ending on the beach. That whole sequence was unbelievably dumb. First Ellie cuts Abby down so they can have a fair fight. Then after a conveniently timed flashback, Ellie makes her actions throughout the whole game mean nothing by sparing Abby.
And of course game of the year could have gone to many more deserving titles. If people really liked TLOU2 that much and think it won all of these categories, fair enough. I just think it's ridiculous how a game that's entire selling point is its story, and has a very flawed story, is better than every other game released this year.
@Col_McCafferty loved the old Bioware but the newer stuff is awful. I haven't played TLOU2 yet. Waiting to see what Santa has in store!
Amazing Game ,loved it. Wont be getting a PS5 until the next naughty dog game.
DOOM Eternal is a better game. It requires one to master the skills in the game, but is not made to be unfair, just challenging. It’s what games used to be, the types of games we still call masterpieces to this day. TLOU2 is pretty, but it’s more of a movie than a real game.
@Gaming365247 I just feeling disappointed for allowing myself to be tricked by it's previews trailers, and reviews that didn't allowed reviewers to talk about the story nearly at all. If I know the narrative is this fanfic level of bad, I won't preorder or buy this game at full price, maybe when it's $10 or $20. I lost my faith on ND to tell me a good story now.
Fortunately I plan to get ps5 disc so I can buy ND games second hand and sold it again after I'm done with it, if their next game has good gameplay but really bad story like tlou 2. I'll never get tricked again 😃
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L @Voltan I think abby is a psychopath person, she like to torture people for her enjoyment (she also said "wait untill I get you" to tommy, implying she will also torture him), she cheat on her friends spouse, she change faction at will randomly (because some kids save her one time, compared to her wlf friends that save her many times), and she shows no regret about it.
Basically she's the most evil person in last of us universe, there's no redeeming quality for her character.
@ThroughTheIris56 The reason abby survived is because she's neil dman original characters, it's his way of saying f u to bruce straley because he didn't agree to the original revenge tlou 1 story. It's like "my characters can beat up your characters" lol.
@Culjoseth Not everything is a conspiracy dude...accept the truth.
@Matroska - That's probably due to a sense that games are better when they get close to more 'mainstream' media like Film and TV(immortalised in that infamous quote from the God of War demo - "It's not a game script, it's a script"), which is reflected in the award categories sharing a few similarities to awards for those other types of media, and why titles that most meet the same qualities sought in those awards, like Death Stranding and The Last of Us/II generally do the best.
Interesting to see that the blog also puts up who got second, third and even fourth in a particular category; kinda wish it was more prevalent with awards (well, maybe not as far as fourth, but listing the runner-up at least would be nice to see) but I guess most are probably not interested in hearing who only came close to winning *shrugs *.
One interesting bit of info I noticed from reading through the runner-ups is that the consistency in wins stretches beyond The Last of Us II winning Platinum; Ghost of Tsushima and Spider-Man: Miles Morales were often Gold and Silver in those same categories, and in the rare situations in which TLoU II placed lower than Platinum (such as Art Direction and New Character), it was still in the top three, with GoT and MM taking up the other two spots. Given the fierce competition between GoT and TLoU II, this is perhaps not surprising, but Miles Morales being consistently third was a surprise given it was going against titles like FFVII Remake and Assassin's Creed: Valhalla (that it beat FFVII Remake in the Soundtrack category was especially surprising).
Also, no mention of Astro's Playroom winning 'Best Use of DualSense' ?
@ThroughTheIris56 Stop with the Freaking SPOILERS.
You weirdos are entitled to your opinions but no need to try and ruin it for people that have yet to play the game.
PushSquare, you really need to stop this.
@wiiware Here's another one!
Why even bother playing the game, come on PushSquare and the haters (funnily enough) will be happy to give you a blow by blow account of the story!
🤦🤦🤦
Come on guys, it's December and you're still bitching. Where did Neil Druckmann hurt you? Do you need counselling?
Turns out lots and lots of people love this game and they weren't paid off. Someone may think Doom is a better game.but you couldn't pay me to play that. Some think it's Ghost and I look forward to playing it myself. Some may think it's Hades in which case I say, who? But it was The Last of Us Part II that won, yet another award. Again. We did try and warn you.
😜
@Col_McCafferty let's report 'em nasty spoilers.
@felixified Well they should edit their comments or these be removed completely. It's out of order.
Not everyone who wants to play the game has done so, including some posters on here. I suppose you feel differently.
🤦
@Col_McCafferty I'm just stating my opinion of the game story on this comment section, isn't that the purpose of the comment section? And I tried to not spoil the game, but the joel story is like the first hour of the game, I don't think it count as a spoiler. Of course if the mods says it's spoiler, feel free if they want to delete my comment.
I know about joel tlou 2 from twitter but I still preorder the game since I have faith ND know how to make good story, but after tlou 2 and cyberpunk fiasco I think I'll wait for the metacritic and youtubers reviews before buying games full price.
@Col_McCafferty The game's been out for 6 months, I think most people on a Playstation site who were interested at some point will have played it already. If not, probably not a good idea to be looking in a comments section about TLOU2 lol. I can't really explain why the ending was so bad without spoiling it I'm afraid. Though if the mods really want me to edit it out, I'll do so.
@wiiware
Keep crying kid
@Gaming365247 Is that the only things you can says about tlou 2? Is the game is so boring you can't say anything else? We're trying to have discussion in here, this place is not twitter.
@wiiware
Yet youre the only one in this entire comment section complaining about the game and sony. And iits funny you go from having doubts about sonys future games. To this.
@wiiware
And probably unlike you i have played both TLOU Part 2 and GoT my personal Goty is TLOU Part 2 i have now completed meanwhile i am about a 3rd of away though and i find it slow and boring.
@Gaming365247 Now that's a discussion
Well, I don't enjoy the story of this game and if this type of story are the future of sony story focused games, I don't think I'll like that. Maybe I'm a little hard on this game, but that's because I think tlou 1 is one of the best console game ever, along with mgs1 and castlevania sotn, so I expect absolute best from ND.
I already play and finished tlou 2 (and ghost), while I like ghost story, I still think tlou 1 story is better. I'm not saying you're wrong about liking tlou 2 story, I'm just saying I don't like tlou 2 story.
@wiiware That's the real kicker for me. Up until now ND were my favourite studio, but it's depressing to think that now all of their games could be like this from now on.
@ThroughTheIris56 Yeah, this gen (before tlou 2) ND is my favorite sony 1st party devs, they can do no wrong for me, but after tlou 2 I don't think I want to do anything with them anymore. I do hope ND can find others, more talented writers for their next games.
Stunning game on every level, Naughty Dog pushing the ps4 to it limits. Imagine what they will be doing with ps5 in a few years time.
Playing this game I felt I was hit by a train more then once.
Only Bloodborne and Alien Isolation were as immersive as TLOU2 for me. 👏
@ThroughTheIris56..... But that's a good thing though as it means ND will keep on taking risks and not playing it safe which its super great......
Yes it absolutely can be for nothing. The rabid TLOU 2 fans need constant re-affirmation that their game is as stunning and brave as they think it is. So they all moblize quickly to win any of these vote awards. I like most people didn't even hear of this vote on the PsBlog. If I had I would have voted for Ghost of Tsushima. By the same token I could say it can't be for nothing that TLOU 2 has a 5.6 reader score on metacritic with over 150,000 votes. And that is with a ton of fake perfect 10 reviews that say the exact thing as thousands of other reviews. Also it's the only review the person ever made. There is a reason after the initial blind purchases of TLOU, based on the love of the first game, that sales absolutely tanked. They can't give this game away now. That's why there are hundreds of copies on store shelves around the world and you can't sell it to gamestop. I have never seen a Sony first party game go down in price so fast.
@Exlee300p strange because it's never left the top 40 best selling PS4 items on Amazon and more than 80% of verified purchase reviews on Amazon are 5 star.
If tanked it would not be the 5th best selling game of 2020 and the best selling PS exclusive of 2020 as shown in the NPD data.
@GREGORIAN It's a very good thing if those risks pay off. Unfortunately, they did not pay off in TLOU2 for a lot of people. I have no problem with games that don't do anything particularly special, games can be amazing just by doing things well. TLOU didn't reinvent the wheel, but it's an amazing game simply because it's well done.
