In case you missed the news yesterday, Sony has announced the PlayStation Plus lineup for January 2021. In addition to PS4 games Greedfall and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, PS5 owners can look forward to Maneater, a nautical open world action title about being a big bloody shark. That's good news on its own, but those who recently bought the ferocious fish simulator might feel a little short-changed.
As it so happens, it appears Sony is refunding those who purchased Maneater on PS5 in light of its PS Plus status. Reddit user BraeWhyit shared a message they received on their console, which states they will be getting their money back as PS Store credit and can keep the game in their PS5 library. BraeWhyit notes they're in the US, and that the money hasn't been returned just yet, but refunds do normally take a few days to process.
We received word from another person who's had this same experience, so it all sounds legit to us. The only question now is what the cut-off point is. Sony probably isn't going to refund every single copy of Maneater purchased for PS5 — maybe those who bought it within the last month will be contacted, for example. In any case, it's a nice gesture; a common complaint about PS Plus is those who've recently forked out for a game only for it to be put on the subscription service days later.
Have you received this message from Sony about a Maneater refund? Have you bought the game recently and not had a refund offer? Tell us in the comments section below.

Thats cool. Lost count of how many times this has happened to me.
Only right............ if true🤷♂️
Years ago I had a refund for Titan Souls.
I brought it and the day after it was announced as a Plus title.
I took to twitter just to vent out and Sony contacted me and refunded it.
Ah but here's the thing.. the refund is an illusion.
Sony will get that money back from you. That's why the 'refund' appears in your Sony 'wallet.' Regardless of how you paid.
@SirRealDeal Always nice to see a negative spin.
@naruball Call it what you like. I call it honesty.
No one is getting a refund. Sony is just giving you a new opportunity to give them your money. And you will. Because you can't spend that particular money any other way.
Even if the money is directed to your PS wallet, it's still a refund. Good job on Sony for doing the right thing here.
@SirRealDeal it’s still a nice gesture from Sony and while yes it’s store credit and not cash, it gives customers the opportunity to purchase something else that they may have been on the fence about.
@SirRealDeal but it is a refund. Sure you can only buy something else on the playstation store, but thats money you had previously spent out that you now have back to use to buy something else. Which - lets be real - if you are buying maneater on the playstation store, then you are very likely to spend more money on psn in the future
@Rob_230 I wouldn't say that, I bought a PS5 exclusively for ManEater and never planned to buy another game again.
That's cool, I hope psn can have automatic refund policy someday just like steam
@SirRealDeal I absolutely love it when people call their opinion "truth", "reality", "honesty", or, my absolute favourite, "common sense".
Its good they're doing this, I had a similar thing with Gamepass adding a game I'd just bought but was able to get a refund easily
Uh what, so I can go ahead and get a refund for all the games that I own that have since gone into PS+? Because that's a lot of games... I already own Tomb Raider for instance soooo
@SirRealDeal that's still of benefit to the buyer though as they can play the game they wanted to buy and now another game of their choosing. Sony were under no obligation to do anything
Won't be long before all the old gen owners, who haven't got PS5's, come on complaining they already bought Tomb Raider.
Years ago.
@SirRealDeal How can this be nothing but a positive yh its store credit and will be spent on another game but at least the customer won't feel ripped off and with the incredible sale right now lots of games to purchase for a cheap price.
Sony had no legal obligation to do this. So in this case its nothing more than a moral decision by them. Great to see to be honest and builds trust 👍
@wiiware I don't know alot of First party games are Single player experiences whats to stop the customer buying playing it all the way through then getting a refund. I think it should be based on playtime say about the 2 hour range.
I just wanna know why Maneater wasn't also a Ps4 game like worms game was?
Hall and Oates must have bricked it when they read the headline.
@SirRealDeal Or they can say it sucks too be you next time better luck.
@Gaming365247 It was a PS4 game wasnt it?
@Flaming_Kaiser
The worms game? It was Ps4/Ps5
Funny how shadow of the tomb raider was put in the sale just before it goes to ps plus...
@Max2574 Of course there has to be time limit, like steam 2 hours limit. Or if it's short indie games, player can't refund the game if the players already finish it.
@Gaming365247 Maneater is a ps4 games but only ps5 can claim it on psplus.
This is great news, Sony seems to be getting more pro consumer lately. I wonder how is works though, do Sony contact people offering a refund or just do it anyway? I mean some people may want to buy a game on sale to keep and not just with a active subscription. I'm always subscribed myself because I think it is good value and I like a lot of the games they give over the years.
I bought Shadow of the Tomb Raider at launch, does that count? 😛
In all seriousness, I like this move. Hopefully going forward there is a standard timeframe, like a week or a month, before which someone who’s purchased a PS Plus game has the option to get store credit back. Even if it’s partial credit, it a good deal. It will create some confidence in the long run where people will end up spending more freely without worry or concern for “wasting” a purchase. It will probably end up increasing profits for Sony as people won’t hold back buying games. I know there have been many times where I decide not to buy a game (especially the last week of the month) for fear it might go on PS Plus a week later.
@LemonHaze I imagine you have to had bought it when the PS5 was already in order to get it.
@naruball
.....wait..... You were being sarcastic! You don't love when people do this at all!!!!
😜😂 But seriously, I completely agree. Everything is subjective. Optimists will see things one way, cynics another. Realists just take things as they are. 🤷♂️
Personally I don't mind store credit - it's nice to have some handy for the next expansion.
If only they would process my Cyberpunk refund
@SirRealDeal But next time you can spend money on the games that are not given with ps plus
reminds me of the small refund for the price change in cyberpunk, I didn't receive that or any information whatsoever regarding it from Sony, useless, I would suggest contacting customer services to ensure you get a refund
@naruball Haha. Facts are not opinion. Surely you know that.
I didn't buy Maneater so I didn't get a refund.
Wow, Sony must have lost literally tens of dollars there.
I bought the PS4 game from Target during the Black Friday sales. Guess I'm SOL.
@SirRealDeal "facts". Another word that gets destroyed on an everyday basis on the internet.
The fact is that Sony is giving at least some refunds. The interpretation of that action is an opinion.
Some, like you, may see it as an "illusion".
Others as something perfectly fine and convenient.
Neither is correct or incorrect and neither is a fact.
If only they'd actually let you own it...
Wonder if I can get a refund on Tomb Raider also? Bought it around the summer some time so, idk, seems like a reasonable window to me.
Really I'd just settle for my Cyberpunk refund though.
@naruball eh, I see you're mostly trying to be impartial and diplomatic (which I applaud, no sarcasm) but ps funds are still a refund. Especially if that's what was used to purchase the game in the first place.
I take your point about the word fact being overused and all but it's no illusion that you can use that money again whilst also keeping the previously purchased game. The fact that it's store credit is irrelevant.
Tldr: I'm with you on this one.
@Nepp67
I don't think they're replacing it with a PS+ license version. The notice I saw stated that the user would still be able to play the game after being refunded, before it comes to Plus next week...so I would think they still have the permanent license for the purchased, 'owned' version.
@Johnnycide Not really. If they refunded their money in the form of PS Store Credit, they'll make it back. At least most.
@InsertUsername r/wooosh
Lovin it lovin it lovin it!!!
I don't see how this can be seen any other way but positive if true. I'm always afraid to buy something on sale because I'm worried it'll just be on PS+ or ps now next month. This gesture can eliminate that worry.
@Gaming365247 Ok but i think i misunderstood the question i think its ment if its available for both platforms too download. But thanks for the info anyway.
Great news now all i need is a PS5 any chance you can make a couple Sony so I don't have to sell a kidney to buy one of a lovely salt of the earth scalper on ebay 👍
I’m interested to know if any European owners have had this refund? We tend to be treated differently to US.
@SirRealDeal I am going to hazard a guess and say that the people who bought Maneater on the PS5 were going to buy another game in the future. The number of people who bought a PS5 as a PS Plus machine and only ever intended to buy Maneater outside of that could be easily counted on one hand.
Maybe we should poll the people who are getting refunds and see how bothered they are if it is PS Store credit.
@Enigk I posted a comment about this on Weds. I'm not bothered about refund going to wallet as A) i wasn't expecting a refund and B) Chances are I will be buying a game through PS store sometime down the line so I'm looking at it as a discount on my next purchase.
The problem is that when a game goes free, it was usually on sale just a few weeks earlier. That’s why it so often happens a game goes free right after you buy it
Well as someone who purchased man eater for Christmas for my son to play , I'm really happy I got the notification from Sony. I wasn't expecting it at all, so even if it isn't a cash refund, that's basically a free game for me to purchase from the PS store at some point (ok perhaps half of one of its an A list title) either way I'm getting something for nothing (considering my original investment was already spent).
So how many actually bought Maneater on PS5? Can't see it being much. Most who would can't even get a PS5!
Sony doing something customer friendly of their own volition without threats of litigation?
2021 is strange and frightening.....
@Nepp67 The only games you actually can "own" are physical ones.
@Party_Cannon Yeah that's true sadly
I never bought this game, but happy to see recent owners being refunded.
Why are we not allowed to add this to library if we haven't managed to get a PS5 yet? Previously I could add PS Vita games though I don't own one.
