Returnal looks set to be the first major PlayStation 5 exclusive out the gate in 2021, and if these new gameplay snippets are anything to go by, Housemarque could be onto a real winner here. The footage is accompanied by game director Harry Krueger, who discusses the origins of the rogue-like shooter. Originally codenamed Dark Planet, the game is talked up to be the developer's dream project.
The footage quickly touches on proficiency levels, securing areas, and a grappling hook. Because every good game needs a grappling hook, right? We're slightly worried Returnal may suffer as a result of its high price tag, but the game itself is shaping up incredibly well. Are you excited? Try and try again in the comments below.

Looks good. However that price tag will kill it.
If it had Co op that would be great, I'm unsure if Co op has been mentioned or not yet though.
I love housemarque but I don’t see a $70 game here I’ll probably get it on a sale tho
Looking amazing, but as I've said before... not £70 ($92) amazing.
Any game I pick up at that price is getting traded in as soon as I finish or decide it isn't for me. I don't see myself hanging on to too many games this generation.
This looks awesome.
Day one this has me more pumped then Cyberpunk 2077 ever has. 😁
Like it. Reminds me of MDK from Shiny Entertainment... that was so great anno 1997
Now this is looking good, not good enough to be worth £70, but pretty damn good, please lower the price Sony and give this game a proper chance sales wise!
Not sure about the price either but it keeps looking better and better.
How about getting more systems out so people can play this and not bots or release it on Ps4 too for $40
@Gaming365247 the game will be out in march... maybe.
Looks great! Not $70 great, but pretty great. I'll wait for a sale.
Liking the look of this and I will be picking it up for sure.
Looks fantastic! I hope they pull a Sucker Punch and add a coop component... this would greatly add value to the package.
I though it's a gameplay/state of play preview trailer, I'm already interested in this game but I want to know about the gameplay rather than more interviews
It will be cool if all sony games preview is like horizon zero dawn, at first there's some cg that explain the game background, then straight to gameplay. After that we can talk about the development of the game.
I remember reading how the $70 price tag would kill this game.
I think it just has a lot more to prove. I've been playing Demon's Souls for a month now and I think the price is justified.
Will the same apply to Returnal? We will find out.
It does look good, but at £70, no thanks. To be honest that goes for pretty much every game though.
I need four player online coop on games like this.
Exactly. Demon's Souls worth every penny. Hopefully this one will be the same. We should stop complaining about the next gen price tag it doesn't change anything just getting boring. Wait for the game then judge. They won't be cheaper but you'll get better experience. If the game is good lot of people going to buy it for full price eventually. Probably some of the 3rd party games will be cheaper but 1st party's game won't. And that's ok if you'll get a better experience after all.
Looking fine for £25/30 new but I'll wait until it's under £15 about 6 months after launch.
I will never ever buy games at £70 even if they are great. Unfortunately I have a mortgage, bills and a brain. I will always wait until the sale brings them down to standard prices.
Perhaps this is how Sony plan to do pricing going forwards. Day 1 adopters pay a premium, week 2 pay a little less and so on.
They talk a lot about horror in that video, but I have to be honest... this style of gameplay, for me, doesn't really go hand-in-hand with a horror title... at least, not one which I personally would find particularly creepy or scary.
At the moment, it's looking like one I'll buy - when I eventually get a PS5 - but I don't think I'll ever view it as a 'horror' title.
Sony is going to kill this game at $70. Should be a $49 game.. Hope Sony changes its mind with low preorders and reduces the price so people can try this game before its a $20 bargain bin game.
I hope this isnt a one hit die game where you start from the beginning of the game. Kinda confused on this so if anyone knows more please enlighten me.
wow this looks awesome.
pre-order check!
not sure why everyone is saying it's not worth the money lol. How do you know? Have you already played this game? lol
You can't fork out the extra $10 investment for this studio who's trying to break into this type of genre? That's sad!
This game will be awesome I have no doubt.
Also, these "dev" diaries are great! I love seeing these leading up to the release date. More studios need to do this.
I've got my eye on this one. If it reveiws highly and has enough content, the developer deserves the 70 as much as anyone.
@Tatarimokke What this person said!
@Tatarimokke no we need to complain louder over this price increase cause its going to kill games like this. I for one will be purchasing alot less games now so a game I might take a chance with, now I will just wait 6 months or longer if I don't forget bout it.
@Snick27 So you'll easily grab a PS5 without batting an eye, but won't drop an extra $10 for one game? wow
Looks intriguing but I’ll wait to see how it reviews and maybe a price drop tbh.
Returnal look like it’s worth 70$ to me just like demon souls is. if you to broke to buy great games at full price you need to stop gaming altogether.
@Mintie gawtdamn? £70! Why such a mark up? If its $69.99 it should be £53. After a rough conversion.
@4kgk2 some people like to save money, when they can. Nothing to do with being broke. You may not look for deals, but when you start spending your own money, you'll understand.
The price tag will kill the game I think, it's a shame...
@Snick27 Yes that's right. I just said if the game will be good people will buy it.
I'll pay the $70 if it's worth it. The game does look awesome and it's right there with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Resident Evil: Village and Horizon: Forbidden West on my most-anticipated list.
@PhhhCough it's €80 in Europe unfortunately - always has been more expensive on this side of the Atlantic ($60/€70 for years)
@4kgk2 bad take
@PhhhCough I already spend my own money and I’m gonna spend some of my money on returnal day one and support the developers I love game.
If you buy physical edition you won't have problem with it at all. Play through then sell it. That's what i did a lot of time just bought it on release day then sold it after completion then buy it again few months later when price dropped if i liked it and put it into my collection. if you prefer digital library that's a different story
That said playstation studios at the beginning, did sony purchase Housemarque?
@Weebleman I think it just means it's published by Sony
Super excited about this. Their gameplay pedigree is top-notch, and the creature design and effects look awesome. Pumped!
Returnal looks better every time we get a new look. If the structure is anything like Hades rogue-like storytelling then I think Sony may have another Tsushima-level sleeper hit on its hands. And its probably going to be the best looking PS5 game until Gran Turismo 7 arrives.
Everyone complaining about price yet Valhalla is top selling game this month and it has $80-100 editions that I KNOW some of you picked up
@PhhhCough with taxes and stuff we'd be content with £60, it'd still come out a bit steeper than even the most heavy state sales tax... It just honestly feels like we're being fleeced, same with our EU chums... The worst thing is is that there has always been a balance between currencies that bring the prices to within a few currency units of each other, it's never been this obvious before.
@Voltan that would make sense. Thought id completely missed something for a second
@PhhhCough American prices don't include tax. Still doesn't explain ALL the price difference though.
A $70 game would be £52 if no tax was included. Add in the highest sales tax in the US (13.5%) and you're looking at roughly $80 or £60. However, if the US had our VAT, it would go from $70 to $84 which is still only £63. So long story short they're just adding on £7 for no reason.
@rumple1980 @Snick27 $500 is a one time purchase. $70 is not unless you are using common core math. If you are happy over paying for games then sure keep it up. Some of us work too hard to waste it so some CEO of these companies cant make another million dollars. I hated $60 for games,looking at you No Man's Sky. With most games coming out all buggy, gives me more reason to wait for a price drop. But I hope they raise games to $100 just for you.
This game looks awesome. I’m not worried about price. I get the feeling this is very much going to be a Housemarque Opus.
I mean you could sometimes talk about the game without freaking out about the price and derailing the comments in that direction.. Just an idea.
Got all covered I think. 🤷♂️
Judging by these comments I'll be the only one buying this game. I love roguelikes. If you're pissed about the price and want to play it then do what I do, wait for a sale.
@2cents editions with season pass that will have massive dlcs released after, not the base game. Big difference
Liam, I think it's great that you highlight these videos. Housemarque make great games but have poor visibility, so stuff like this really helps!
reminds me a lot of Godfall... never had a good feeling for Godfall, certainly dont have much positive feeling here too
Hi there fellow gamers.
I´m really looking foward for this game.
It feels like Vanquish on steroids(and that´s saying something)
High hope for this one.
Cheers, stay safe people and happy gaming to us all
@ORO_ERICIUS Hi there friend.
MDK was something else way back then.
A very fun and crazy third person shooter, with a surreal sense of humor(space janitor becomes galaxy hero).
Aside from that, Shinny also made Wild 9 on Playstation one. Loved that game. Great gameplay and soundtrack as well.
Cheers, stay safe and have a good one
@Snick27 €70 will be enough if its good i will gladly pay it. Rather this game the a CP2077 for a €10 more.
@OthmaneAD This one wont get a seasonpass or DLC or timesavers just a complete game.
@Jeevz could I get game titles/examples for:
-a "rogue" (besides the actual game Rogue)
-a "rogue-like"
-a "rogue-lite"
barely a month into the console being released and people already talking about $70 being too much for a game lmao y'all should of stayed on PS4 until you could afford the games
The gameplay here looks better than was shown at the Game Awards. I can’t wait for this fast-twitch shooter.
@KorsaRaph not everything needs a mp mode or coop mode to have value
@Snick27 how will sony kill this game? If it doesn't sell at $70, it will sell at $60 later on and they don't lose any money because it started at $70.
After watching that clip, my excitement level for this game jumped from ten to eleven. Those monsters, and that world, both look like some of the best I've ever seen. I know it's not a great time to have unrealistic hopes for a game, but I mean, LOOK at it!
After reading through the comments, I was pleasantly surprised to see mention of MDK. What a great game that was! I still think that ribbed parachute added some of the best game mechanics to third person games. Very surprised this hasn't been emulated more often as the years go by. Thanks for the memories!
I really like several (but not all) Housemarque titles. I am not a fan of rogue-likes. Perhaps most importantly, it looks too busy/fast for me to follow in places. I think I will pass on this one or wait for an extreme discount.
@PhhhCough
Nope, only my wife tells me what to do, not some scrub on the internet.
day one for me love HM games 👍👍
Disagree regarding the price, personally most games are to expensive. But my opinion is all games don't have to be 40+ hours open world to be worth the money. I prefer quality over quantity. Not everyone has the time or the inclination to play for hours on end.
